I employ disability theory, close reading and sociocultural analysis to address inequitable representations of disability across a range of high and pop cultural narratives, from an early novel of Samuel Beckett's to films that use CGI prosthetics.

Artistic Directors Note Antaeus Theatre Company has always been known as a “classical” theater company, featuring playwrights such as Shakespeare, Chekhov and Shaw. But a question that fascinates, confounds and inspires us is: What is a Classic? What makes a piece of writing timeless and fresh? What does a particular story have to say about our time, to our audience, to our community right now? We are always challenging ourselves to answer those questions. When we came across Nambi E. Kelley’s new adaptation of Richard Wright’s groundbreaking novel Native Son on the Kilroys List of un- and underproduced plays by female and transgender writers, we knew we had found a piece that would both answer — and expand — our definition of "What is a Classic?" More specifically we make the argument that full inclusion of people with disabilities is not a matter of charity, but of civil rights. We researched this White Paper in order to further the awareness around this civil rights movement. We believe that the results we found will meaningfully contribute to the conversation of diversity in entertainment as a civil rights issue that needs to be addressed more systematically by the media and entertainment industry. The world’s economic outlook is still precarious and to appease a restless population the authorities have decriminalised all classes of recreational drugs. The ‘Drecks’ are an elite unit created by an over- stretched police force to keep the black market dealers off the streets and the licensed drug companies rich. Dreck and recovering addict Frank Grieves is called to investigate an unidentifiable corpse out in the Kindle District, an industrial wasteland beyond the teeming Central City. The victim had been injected through the eye socket with a substance that cannot be traced on any of the licenced databases. As he starts to dig deeper, Grieves soon suspects that Ambro, the largest and most profitable of all the licensed drugs companies, is behind the new, experimental drug. When his superiors promptly warn him off any further investigation, Grieves soon learns that Ambro’s influence runs deep within the establishment. Nonetheless, Grieves returns to the crime scene for another look, where he discovers a young woman being attacked by a masked assailant. Grieves fails to apprehend the attacker, but soon learns that the young woman, Eva, has also been using this mysterious drug.
