    BRITISH AND COMMONWEALTH CONCERTOS FROM THE NINETEENTH CENTURY TO THE PRESENT A Discography of CDs & LPs Prepared by Michael Herman Sir Edward Elgar (1857-1934) Born in Broadheath, Worcestershire, Elgar was the son of a music shop owner and received only private musical instruction. Despite this he is arguably England’s greatest composer some of whose orchestral music has traveled around the world more than any of his compatriots. In addition to the Conceros, his 3 Symphonies and Enigma Variations are his other orchestral masterpieces. His many other works for orchestra, including the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, Falstaff and Cockaigne Overture have been recorded numerous times.     Nadège Rochat, Cellist – Biography An exciting new energy on the music scene, Rochat involves herself in projects that have brought her to various stages worldwide including the Tonhalle Zurich, Vienna’s Musikverein, the Carnegie Hall in New York, and the Mariinsky Theater II St. Petersburg. She has featured in recital or as soloist, performing not only great pieces of the standard cello repertoire but also pieces that are the fruit of her research on forgotten composers and music from around the world. Nadège won several first prizes in competitions and released two very different CDs, one with French music for cello and orchestra and the other one about her project “La Vida Breve” (“the short life”) with the Guitarist Rafael Aguirre, which targets Spanish and South American classical music. Nadège Rochat, Franco-Swiss cellist born in Geneva in 1991, began learning cello at the age of 4 with her aunt Fabienne Diambrini. Later, she joined the Conservatoire of Geneva, where she was taught by Daniel Haefliger. At the age of 15, she moved to Cologne where she studied Bachelor at the HfMT with Prof. Maria Kliegel. In 2015, she graduated in the Masters programme of the Royal Academy of Music in London where she studied with Robert Cohen. Always in search of a wider knowledge of her instrument and music in general, she participated in numerous masterclasses by musical personalities such as Anner Bijlsma, Christoph Richter, Heinrich Schiff, Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt, Itamar Golan and Colin Carr. Nadège performed as soloist with orchestras in venues such as the Tonhalle Zurich, Vienna’s Musikverein, the Konzerthaus Dortmund and the Victoria Hall Geneva.

    DECCA DISCOGRAPHY >>4 GREAT BRITAIN: digital, 1979-2008 In the early 1970s the advent of Anthony Rooley, the Consort of Musicke, Emma Kirkby, Christopher Hogwood and the Academy of Ancient Music brought a fresh look at repertoire from Dowland to Purcell, Handel, Mozart and eventually Beethoven. Solti recorded with the LPO from 1972 and the National Philharmonic was booked regularly from 1974-84. Also during the 1970s the London Sinfonietta’s surveys of Schönberg and Janá ček were recorded. Ashkenazy’s second career as a conductor centred initially on London, with the Philharmonia from 1977 and the RPO from 1987. Philip Pickett’s New London Consort joined the Florilegium roster in 1985 and Argo’s new look brought in a variety of ensembles in the 1990s. But after an LPO Vaughan Williams cycle was aborted in 1997, Decca’s own UK recordings comprised little more than piano music and recital discs. Outside London, Argo recorded regularly in Cambridge and Oxford. Decca engaged the Welsh National Opera from 1980-96 and the Bournemouth Symphony from 1990-96, but otherwise made little use of regional British orchestras. By the time they raised their performing standards to an acceptable level, Chandos, Hyperion and Naxos had largely replaced the old majors in the market for orchestral sessions. >RV0 VENUES One hundred and seventy different venues were used, eighty-eight in the London area and eighty-two elsewhere in Britain, but only one in ten (those in bold ) hosted thirty or more entries, whilst seventy were only visited once. ROBERT COHEN 1 Violonchelista - Inglaterra Nació en Londres en 1959, empezó sus estudios de chelo a los 5 años, y a los 8 ganó el premio Siggia para solistas potenciales de menos de 21, premio que retuvo durante los 5 años siguientes en las sucesivas competencias anuales. Entre 1969 y 1976 fue alumno de William Pleeth, e hizo su primer gran concierto en el Royal Festival Hall a la edad de 12 años. En 1978 ganó el Concurso Internacional de Nueva York para Jóvenes Solistas, y en el mismo año obtuvo el Premio Piatigorsky en el Festival de Tanglewood. En 1981 fue el ganador del Concurso Internacional de la UNESCO realizado en Checoslovaquia. Realizó para el sello EMI Classics su primera grabación - el concierto de Elgar con la Orquesta Filarmónica de Londres bajo la dirección de Roger Norrington- a los Digitalizado por la Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango del Banco de la República, Colombia. 19 años. Con ella obtuvo un Disco de Plata y un importan­ te premio de la crítica especializada. Desde entonces ha grabado una gran parte del repertorio para el instrumento: los conciertos de Dvorak, Chaikovsky, Rodrigo, Howard Blake, Bliss (con la Orquesta Filarmonica Real), Walton (con la Orquesta Sinfónica de Bournemouth), la Sinfonía poro Chelo de Britten (con la Filarmónica de Londres) y todas las suites para chelo solo de Bach y de Britten.
