Wilkie, Chair Archaeological sites and ethnographic museums preserve materials, and the human lives to which they connect, in different ways. Sites preserve evidence of peoples’ everyday lives in the form of their material contents, but by their nature as buried and often fragmented artifacts and features they also indicate some degree of loss or even erasure during the process of the site’s formation. Ethnographic museums, by contrast, purposefully preserve both material and documentary evidence of people’s lives. However, they also maintain the context of the collection’s creation, the agencies of the original owners, collectors, and institutions involved in their assembly. This dissertation examines an archaeology site and museum collections in tandem to discern their shared context in transpacific interactions between the United States and East Asia in the late nineteenth century. First, I use a combination of oral history and historical archaeology to understand the lives of Chinese immigrants living at the Arboretum Chinese Quarters at Stanford University in California between 1876 and 1925, the era of both widespread Chinese diaspora and increasing racialization and discrimination against immigrants in the United States. Second, I examine ethnographic museum collections initially created during this same time period between the 1870s and 1920s. These collections of material culture from the Ainu, the Indigenous people of Hokkaido, Sakhalin, and the Kurile Islands, share a social context with the archaeological remains of the Chinese diaspora beyond their contemporaneity. Both the site and the collections formed as they did due to the racialization of Asian ethnic groups in the nineteenth century United States. Through uniting these material remains with historical documentation, oral histories, and records of oral traditions, I explore this shared context, the evidence they both provide about everyday lives shaped by colonial policy, and present ways that objects, both archaeological and ethnographic, continue to matter for descendent and other stakeholder communities today. 1 Acknowledgements My dissertation would not have been possible without the support of the multiple kinds of communities with whom I worked. I appreciate her advice, patience, critique, and collegiality during my time in graduate school, her guidance on writing and teaching, and her creativity and encouragement about combining wide-ranging topics. Ira Jacknis has similarly offered me both professional mentoring and vast academic and historical knowledge of museums and the development of anthropology. Taking his class my first year in graduate school derailed my plans for a simple research topic because of how much I learned and how generous he was with sharing his expertise. His support for postponing my final paper in my first-year class turned into my application to research at the Smithsonian, my excitement to work at the Hearst Museum as a graduate student, and my use of collections as teaching tools in classes of my own. Tilt Although dam construction has been an integral tool in development initiatives for nearly a century, dams can have significant negative impacts on local residents, particularly those who are permanently displaced from their homes and must be resettled elsewhere. Dams have unique impacts on indigenous peoples. As a result, many dam construction projects become flashpoints for organized resistance among indigenous peoples. This thesis examines a case that exemplifies indigenous resistance to dam construction: the Saru River Development Project in Hokkaido, Japan, involving the Nibutani Dam (completed 1997) and the Biratori Dam (under construction). This project has been famously opposed by indigenous Ainu landholders. Although much has been written about the legal and political significance of the Ainu’s resistance to the Saru River Development Project, information on the project’s impacts on local Ainu residents is scattered across many disparate sources, and no comprehensive English-language account has yet been produced. This thesis seeks to fill this gap in the literature by cataloging the impacts of the Saru River Development Project as comprehensively as possible and synthesizing available facts into a holistic account. This thesis organizes these impacts according to the newly-published Matrix Framework (Kirchherr and Charles 2016), enabling it to be more easily compared with other case studies of dam construction around the world.

Otemon Gakuin University (Japan) ABSTRACT The primary aim of this paper is to outline the cultural landscapes associated with the Ainu people and their culture, as well as the characteristics of tourism leveraging these landscapes, in Biratori Town in the Hidaka region of Japan’s Hokkaido Prefecture. Such landscapes incorporate, as an integral part, sacred places of the Ainu, an indigenous people of Japan located mainly in Hokkaido. In particular, the Cultural Landscape along the Sarugawa River Resulting from Ainu Tradition and Modern Settlement has been designated as an Important Cultural Landscape by the Japanese government. ZHAKSYMOV*** Abstract: Scientists recognize the difficulties associated with final and perfect solution of the problem of origin of the Altai community. The most important issue according to their opinion is a difficulty in differentiation of elements of a possible genetic commonality, the traces of which can be found in all Altaic languages, from the secondary elements of community, developing in different periods of close contacts of various Altaic peoples for at least of two millennia period. Mutual lexical borrowings of not only from single Altaic languages, but also borrowings from non-Altaic languages (the phenomenon of the substrate or super stratum) led to a significant lexical generality of secondary order and gave the reasons for establishment of various kinds of correspondences not relating to common Altaic protolanguage heritage that creates a large difficult to apply comparative- historical method. Kinko Ito University of Arkansas at Little Rock Introduction Golden Kamuy1 is an incredibly popular Japanese manga that has been serialized in Shūkan Young Jump, a weekly comic magazine, since August 21, 2014. The magazine is produced by Shueisha that publishes its komikkusu2 and digital media in Tokyo. The action adventure comic story by Satoru Noda revolves around two protagonists, Saichi Sugimoto, a returning Japanese soldier, and Asirpa, a beautiful Ainu girl in her teens. The manga also features many characters who play the roles of significant “supporting actors” for the dynamic development of the story. They all have strong and unique personalities, various criminal and non-criminal backgrounds, as well as complicated psychological characteristics. The compelling story also entails hunting, conflict, violence, food, and events in the history of Hokkaido, Japan and the world. Golden Kamuy has been creating much interest in the Ainu people, their history, and their culture among the Wajin (non-Ainu Japanese) in today’s Japan.3 I have been doing research on Japanese manga since the end of the 1980s and started my fieldwork on the Ainu during my sabbatical in the spring of 2011. In this essay, I am doing a content analysis of Golden Kamuy, paying special attention to the depiction of the Ainu and their culture as well as its educational values and contribution to the Ainu Studies.
