Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.” Ultimately the answer to the question of whether the Western Rite is Orthodox or not is answered by how if affects the lives of the men, women and children who live out their relationship with God in this manner. Does the Western Rite, like the Eastern Rite, lead people to become holy, to grow in their relationship with God? Is the Western Rite an expression of authentic Christianity that encourages people to become more like Christ? In answer to these questions we should look at the lives of some of the “cloud of witnesses” as the holy ones are called in the Epistle to the Hebrews. By their fruit you will know them. As we look at the expansion of Christianity into the West, we must start with what is now Italy. Rome, of course, was the capitol of the empire and was generally considered to 1 be the center of the world at the time. Jews had been living in Rome for nearly two hundred years before the birth of Christ. The thesis explores the importance of these events for queens as both a personal and public experience, and questions the existence of distinctly Western and Eastern styles of queenship. A comparative study of ‘Eastern’ and ‘Western’ ceremony in the sixteenth century has never been attempted before and sixteenth- century Polish queens usually do not appear in any collective works about queenship, even those which claim to have a pan-European focus. -

Bouchard FAMILY STRUCTURE AND FAMILY CONSCIOUSNESS AMONG THE ARISTOCRACY IN THE NINTH TO ELEVENTH CENTURIES* There can be no question that the period from the ninth to eleventh centuries in westem Europe was one of political upheaval and change for the aristocracy. Charlemagne’s empire was invaded, fought over, divided into new kingdoms and principalities. Fief-holding, vassalage, and castles first became widespread. Even the sorts of men who wielded power changed as new lineages first of counts and then of castellans appeared and married into previously established lines1. This political change, it is generally agreed, was accompanied by some sort of change in the family structure of the aristocracy, but there has been a good deal of debate over exactly what this change entailed. In this paper, I shall reexamine the question of noble family structure in this period, trying first to define some of the parameters of the discussion and then making suggestions on the nature of the changes in family consciousness, suggestions quite different from the conclusions many have drawn in the last twenty-five years. I shall do so using concrete examples drawn from three different lineages or family groups. -

This collection includes a medal bearing the portrait of the dashing Edward VIII, as well as two colonial coins from British West Africa. The West Africa coins do not show his portrait because he abdicated too soon for the dies to be used in striking. On 20 January, 1936, Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David, of the House of Windsor, succeeded his father, George V, as King of Great Britain and the Dominions of the British Empire. Edward VIII would abdicate in December of the same year, in order to marry the love of his life, the twice-divorced American arriviste Wallis Simpson. His 326-day reign is among the shortest in the long annals of British history. When he was Prince of Wales, Edward became arguably the world’s first modern international celebrity. Exploits of the royal family have always been the subject of great popular interest, but Edward took to the role like none of his predecessors ever had. He was handsome, suave, fashionable, and unlike his stolid and old-fashioned father, he seemed to emulate the ebullient spirit of the post-war Jazz Age. In short, he had it all. That he would surrender so precious a prize as the British throne to marry a commoner—an American commoner, at that, and one with a somewhat notorious past—was widely viewed as the ultimate romantic gesture: a declaration of love ne plus ultra. In fact, there is more to this tale than meets the eye. Abdication was not a great sacrifice for Edward VIII. As much as he loathed “princing,” as he called it, when he’d been Prince of Wales, he hated being king even more. -

___________________________________________________________ Mediacide: the Press’s Role in the Abdication Crisis of Edward VIII Joel Grissom ___________________________________________________________ On December 10, 1936, a group of men entered the ornate drawing room of Fort Belvedere, the private get-away of His Majesty, King Edward VIII. The mood of the room was informal as the King sat at his desk. Fifteen documents lay before him ready for his signature. Briefly scanning them, he quickly affixed, Edward, RI, to the documents. He then relinquished his chair to his brother, Albert, Duke of York, who did the same. The process was repeated twice more as Henry, Duke of Gloucester, and George, Duke of Kent, also signed the documents. The King stepped outside and inhaled the fresh morning air.1 To the King it smelled of freedom. After months of battling with his Prime Minister, Stanley Baldwin, and the Prime Minister’s allies in the establishment and the press, Edward was laying down the crown in order to marry the woman he loved, an American divorcee named Wallis Simpson. The next day the newspaper headlines across the world would broadcast the news of the King’s unprecedented decision. With the signing of the Instrument of Abdication, Edward had signed away his throne. The newspapers in both the United States and the United Kingdom that would report the abdication had played a major role in bringing about the fall of the King. While the British media had observed a blackout during most of the crisis, the media in the United States had reported the story of the King and Mrs. -

Wom en of the Book: The Spiritual Lives of Early Modern Women Women of the Book: The Spiritual Lives of Early Modern Women We offer a collection of 650 books, pamphlets, broadsides, and manuscripts focused mainly on the intersections between convent culture and print. The vast majority of the items (90%) date to the 17th and 18th centuries, when this relationship was at its most fertile. As the collection reveals, convents provided important centers of reading, instruction, and writing for women in Italy, France, Belgium, Germany, Spain, and Switzerland. The rapid spread of female monastic orders (the Poor Clares, Ursulines, Discalced Carmelites, Visitadines, and so on) is re- flected well in the translations and adaptations of biographies of notable nuns. Gathering together a statistically significant num- ber of such biographies, we can perhaps begin to address broad questions of who was writing them, why they were written, and who was supposed to read them (reflected in the large number of ownership inscriptions found on these books). The approxi- mately 350 biographies also invite analysis of common themes in the lives of ‘venerable’ women: age of first religious experience; age at marriage or refusal of marriage; medical afflictions; death of children; and overall lifespan (an astonishing number did not reach the age of 30). Beyond biographies, we have focused on conduct-books for nuns, rules and regulations of convents, spiritual texts written by laywomen, ephemera produced to commemorate nuns and their professions of faith, and even on the legal difficulties faced by convents. The present prospectus offers a brief overview of dif- ferent aspects of this collection. -
