A Unique One-Off Evening with BUZZCOCKS, the SKIDS & PENETRATION at the Royal Albert Hall
May 28, 2019 01:21 BST A Unique One-Off Evening with BUZZCOCKS, THE SKIDS & PENETRATION at the Royal Albert Hall Buzzcockscan confirm their performance on Friday 21 June 2019 at the Royal Albert Hall. After the tragic death of their frontman and founder member Pete Shelley, the remaining members felt that the evening should become a tribute to Pete and a celebration of his life. They will be performing with some special guest vocalists including Dave Vanian and Captain Sensible (The Damned), Peter Perrett (Only Ones), Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Tim Burgess (The Charlatans), Pauline Murray (Penetration), Richard Jobson (The Skids), original Buzzcocks Steve Garvey and John Maher and compere for the evening Paul Morley, with more guests to be announced soon. This will be first time that the Royal Albert Hall have hosted an evening of music featuring a three-band bill of some of the premier artists from the 1970’s punk and new wave scene. Buzzcocks. Formed in Manchester in February 1976 having witnessed the Sex Pistols play, they became the first British punk band to form their own label. They released their debut Spiral Scratch EP on New Hormones later that year. A few months later they signed to United Artists becoming one of the punk and new wave scene’s most enduring and successful bands enjoying consistent chart success with hits such as ‘Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t’ve)’, ‘What Do I Get?’ and ‘Promises’. They have toured with Nirvana and Pearl Jam, had a BBC TV show, Never Mind The Buzzcocks named after them. -

Getting into this issue, Larry Schenbeck asks the musical question, "Why Do You Think They Call it Classical?"; Dan Schwartz is still recovering, so we’ll revisit his memorial of Paul Kantner; Richard Murison remembers friends lost along the way; Jay Jay French remembers the birth of the Beatles phenomenon ; Roy Hall remembers his school days; Anne E. Johnson brings us obscure cuts from all the incarnations of Fleetwood Mac; Christian James Hand deconstructs the anthemic MTV hit, "In A Big Country"; and I write about the difference between humility and hubris. Industry News looks at the latest drama from Sears; and our friend Rich Maez brings us the first part of a feature on the glories of the Monterey Auto Week. Copper #69 concludes with Charles Rodrigues giving new meaning to the term GUI, and a Parting Shot that continues our automotive theme. DWAYNE BUNNEY: It’s a privilege to have on the line from Dunfermline in Scotland, founding member and guitarist of Big Country, Bruce Watson. Thanks for joining us. BRUCE WATSON: That’s no problem Dwayne, how are you? DB: Yeah very well. Now we’re going to talk about the new music you and your son Jamie are making in a moment, but, I want to talk to you about Big Country. BW: Yeah that’s not a problem. DB: The band, it’s renowned for being a Scottish band, but no of you were born in Scotland were you? BW: No I was born in Timmins, Ontario in Canada. Stuart was born in Manchester, England, and Tony and Mark, well they were also born in England. DB: Well you certainly don’t sound Canadian I can tell you that. BW: No definitely not. I lost that accent a long, long time ago. DB: Tell us about how you first hooked up with Stuart Adamson to form Big Country. BW: Well Stuart was in a band called The Skids as you probably know. He decided after about three and a half years that he wanted to do something different. And he’d also told me while he was in The Skids that he wanted to start a two guitar band and that at some point he’d give me a call in the future. -

Big Country Book of Lyrics Was Originally Offered Online As a PDF File on a Web Site That Later Grew Into the Current Steeltown Site
D e s i g n e d b y R o b e r t O l i v e r Introduction Project History The Big Country Book of Lyrics was originally offered online as a PDF file on a web site that later grew into the current Steeltown site. Since I had not been pleased with the formatting restrictions of HTML, I had decided to create a file in Adobe PageMaker and then convert it into a PDF (Portable Document Format) file. This format allows complete control over layout and typography, but can result in very large files. Although PDF files are relatively small compared to their original documents (all of the original PageMaker files for this book total over 18 megabytes), a project as large and comprehensive as the Big Country Book of Lyrics results in an appropriately hefty PDF file. Even though I have since converted all lyrics to HTML and incorporated them into the Steeltown web site, the PDF version is still a handy and useful resource, especially when printed and bound for reference. As ubiquitous as the world wide web has become, a printed version of the Book of Lyrics is easier on the eyes, quicker to thumb through, and does not require an internet connection. Status of the Glasgow Apollo Theatre (1973-85)

Reflections on the ‘legendary’ status of the Glasgow Apollo theatre (1973-85) Kenneth Forbes BA, M.Litt Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Culture and Creative Arts College of Arts University of Glasgow April 2015 Abstract The ephemeral nature of live music can, from some perspectives, serve to place limitations on its lasting socio-cultural impact. This thesis addresses such claims by analysing the enduring appeal of a ‘legendary’ venue, the Glasgow Apollo (1973-85), where a series of momentous live music moments from several decades ago continue to be celebrated. In order to accomplish this, the study primarily uses semi-structured and focus group interviews to explore the reminiscences of the audience and artists who shared live music experiences at the venue. Through the application of Actor Network Theory, the work focuses on the influence that actors such as locality, technology, industry and music genre held over these encounters, as well as the manner in which the collective memories of the events in question have subsequently shaped their cultural value. The study first establishes the foundation for Glasgow’s cultural traditions, which thereafter helped to shape the concert experiences at the Apollo. It then follows the actors through, and beyond, the period of the venue’s tenure, to argue that the Apollo ‘legend’ lingers due to the manner in which these live experiences have been collectively framed within several of the platforms dedicated to the -
