NOVEMBER 2010 ISSUE MMUSICMAG.COM ’80s pop culture like John Hughes’ fi lms and U2’s cinematic sound during that era. “We were teenagers then, and a lot of the pop culture was about archetypes of what it was like to be that age,” Bush says. “And that’s what really inspired us to become musicians. A lot of the songs came from conversations about that.” While the powerful, anthemic sound of The Incredible Machine won’t surprise anyone who knows its origins, it might shock country fans used to more down-home sounds. But reinvention is almost as much part of Sugarland’s identity as any one genre. The group grew out of the Atlanta singer-songwriter scene but found immediate success in mainstream country music with its 2004 multiplatinum debut, Twice the Speed of Life. “We’ve turned over a whole lot of new leaves since starting this Stewart Volland band,” says Bush. The trio became a duo when founding member Kristen Hall abruptly Jennifer Nettles, Kristian Bush quit while Sugarland was still riding high on the first album’s success, and some wondered if the shift would upset the group’s unique chemistry.chemistry. But SUGARLANDSUGARLAND NeNettlesttles and Bush made the transitiontransition The country duo turns over another new leaf seamlessly,l l andd subsequent b albumslb haveh proved so successful that they’re now with its new album’s arena-rocking sound headlining arena tours—which comes with its own challenges. • Angelheaded Hipster: the Songs of Marc Bolan & T.Rex (BMG) September 16, 2020
Album Review: Angelheaded Hipster: The Songs of Marc Bolan & T.Rex (BMG) September 16, 2020 A stellar ensemble of artists which include Nick Cave, Lucinda Williams, Todd Rundgren, Joan Jett, two sons of John Lennon amongst others, lay down a worthy and often inspired double album’s worth of classic Marc Bolan songs. Preceding his induction to the Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame later in November this year. Angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection. Alan Ginsberg’s Howl and the Beats were one creative well from which the persona of Marc Bolan arose. He regarded himself as a poet foremost, around which he constructed melodies. Variations on twelve bar blues. Published his collected poems The Warlock of Love in 1969. Sold 40,000 but not well received by some critics. Producer Hal Willner regarded him as a serious writer of the calibre of Kurt Weill, Thelonious Monk and Charles Mingus. He passed away in April this year. Grateful for all his past inuences. Played in skife bands. In a trio with Helen Shapiro. Took notice of Phil Spector, Bob Dylan, Dion and the Belmonts. Looked like Dylan for a while. Marc’s father was a Russian Jew. At some point Feld became Bolan. To mirror Chuck Berry, he then became the English Poet of Rock’n’Roll. From 1970 to 1973 he took over from the recently split Beatles in popularity. Appeared in Ringo Starr’s lm Born to Boogie. Started Glam Rock. David Bowie took lessons and came up with Ziggy Stardust. We needed him to give us something to listen to when all that Prog Rock noodling was spilling over.

  • Punk and Its Afterlives Introduction
Punk and Its Afterlives Introduction Jayna Brown, Patrick Deer, and Tavia Nyong’o Why punk? And why now? Surely those questions have as many answers as there are teenage bedrooms, suburban garages, and rock clubs with a lax or exploitative booking policy. Punk itself at this point needs little introduction: the museums, music retailers, bookstores, and documentary film channels groan under the weight of its archive. More challenging, at least to some, is the case for punk music as a continuing contributor to our political moment. Assuredly, a certain patina of respectability has settled around punk at middle age. Punk memoirs have been wreathed in Pulitzers, and punk musicals have made it to Broadway. Vivienne Westwood is in the V&A and stores in Los Angeles as well as London’s Chelsea, and the Sex Pistols — willing or not — are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Collectors, profiteers, and eBay aficionados hound punk’s vinyl and tape- recorded traces to the four corners of the globe, and digi- tal trainspotters are diligently uploading every scrap of footage they can find. Young twenty- first- century radicals immersed in the anarchist and DIY ethos of movements like Occupy may roll their eyes skeptically at historical punk, even while punk as an ongoing, autonomous, interna- tional subculture rolls on.1 But if punk can never quite give up the ghost, perhaps that’s because we are still trawling through the political and eco- nomic wreckage that prompted its emergence in the first place, whether we locate its much- disputed origins in Detroit in the late 1960s, New York in the early to mid- 1970s, or London and a score of British cities in 1975 – 1977.
