Apartheid's Propaganda i" A South African show·piece match between their "While Hope" Gerri Coetzee and U.S. Black heavy·weight John Tate is scheduled for 20 October in Pretoria, S.A.! We Americans must stop this phony apartheid "sport" scheme! We must strengthen · the United Nations boycott of racist South Africa! Racism isn't a game! It has already cost untold thousands of lives! Apartheid's Propaganda "Sporting" Image Sport has always been an integral part of South Africa's overseas propaganda. Now isolated in almost all major sports, professional boxing offers one of the few arenas still available to it. Boxing in South Africa is directly controlled by that scandal-ridden government. The South African National Boxing Board of Control (SANBBC) is a statutory body under the Ministry of Sport, which pretends that its boxing program is integrated despite the fact that it requires separate categories of "champion" for whites and Blacks. The financing of all recent fights in South Africa has been provided by the Southern Suns Hotels fronting for the Ministry of Information, says the non racial South African Council on Sport (SACOS). SACOS estimates that in the last year alone more than $1 million has been spent in the U.S. to promote South African boxing. Bob Arum, America's Major Promoter of South African Sport Ii was Arum who arranged the so-called "title eliminator matches" between Spinks and Tate and the South Africans. (He made special trips to South Africa to arrange the details.) It was Arum who selected the so-called "independent state" of BophuthaTswana as the site for the recent Knoetze-Tate fight and got CBS to call it "the inde pendent African Nation of . .. " on TV even though South Africa is the only nation that recognizes it as such. Arum has, by manipulation, compelled Black American boxers to agree to fight the apartheid contenders. Arum had claimed that the Bophutha- Tswana fight would have non-segre gated seating, yet in a "country" that is 98% Black, fewer than l.000 of the 51.000 spectators were Black. Arum now again claims that the October bout will be integrated. (Like the last one?) From the SOUTH AFRICAN DIGEST,anofflclal government publlcatlon. NBC·TV Again Intends to Spotlight the Propaganda Spectacle for Millions of Americans! NBC-TV televised Coetzee's massacre of Spinks in June, r179, and would televise the Coetzee-Tate fight in October and thus give credibility to the apartheid regime. CBS-TV, which televised the first two South African fights, has declined showing this fight because of mass pressure. NBC-TV may do the same if there is enough pressure from the public. World Boxing Association (WBA) is Dominated by South Africans Kneotze c: · '":oetzee climbed to 2nd and 5th plm .. 0s in WBA rankings after Mike Mortimer, a South African, became head of the WBA Rankings Committee. The Vice-President of WBA is also a South African. PROTEST! Born and raised in Manchester, Fury weighed just 1lb at birth after being born three months premature. His father John named him after Mike Tyson. From Irish traveller heritage, the“Gypsy King” is undefeated in 28 professional fights, winning 27 with 19 knockouts, and drawing once. His most famous victory came in 2015, when he stunned longtime champion Wladimir Klitschko to win the WBA, IBF and WBO world heavyweight titles. He was forced to vacate the belts because of issues with drugs, alcohol and mental health, and did not fight again for more than two years. Most thought he was done with boxing forever. Until an amazing comeback fight with Deontay Wilder in December 2018. It was an instant classic, ending in a split decision tie. Outside of the ring, Tyson Fury is a mental health ambassador. He donated his million dollar purse from the Deontay Wilder fight to the homeless. This book is dedicated to the cause of mental health awareness.

12/16/2015 STEVE MARANTZ; IF THE OTHER SPORTS WERE MORE LIKE BOXING . - The Boston Globe Archives STEVE MARANTZ; IF THE OTHER SPORTS WERE MORE LIKE BOXING . [FIRST Edition] Boston Globe (pre-1997 Fulltext) - Boston, Mass. Author: Marantz, Steve Date: May 16, 1982 Start Page: 1 Section: SPORTS Document Text In a period of a few months, boxing fans have been jilted by Cooney- Holmes, Hagler-Hearns, Leonard-Stafford and Weaver-Cobb. All of these were supposed to be major title fights before they became postponements. Cooney-Holmes is rescheduled for June 11, which leaves plenty of time for another postponement. Boxing fans no longer talk about who is going to win the big fight. They talk about when it will be postponed. Those less familiar with boxing must be terribly confused or amused. This is because boxing shares little common ground with other sports. Imagine if other sports were run like boxing: The Red Sox would have canceled their games with Kansas City this weekendbecause of Carl Yastrzemski's pulled groin. Dick Howser and the Royals' team physician would have demanded their own examination of Yaz. NFL Comr. Pete Rozelle would refuse to license the Patriots to play football because of their 2-14 record. Rozelle would say, "The Patriots have taken too many blows to the head. One more knockout could be fatal." The Patriots would change their name and go play in Rhode Island. George Steinbrenner would get the Yankees into the World Series by making a phone call to Mexico or Central America and buying them baseball's No.

  • Muhammad Ali's Main Bout: African American Economic Power and The
1 Muhammad Ali’s Main Bout: African American Economic Power and the World Heavyweight Title—by Michael Ezra Muhammad Ali announced at a press conference in January 1966 that he had formed a new corporation called Main Bout, Inc. to manage the multi-million-dollar promotional rights to his fights. “I am vitally interested in the company,” he said, “and in seeing that it will be one in which Negroes are not used as fronts, but as stockholders, officers, and production and promotion agents.” Although racially integrated, Main Bout was led by the all-black Nation of Islam. Its rise to this position gave African Americans control of boxing’s most valuable prize, the world heavyweight championship. Ali envisioned Main Bout as an economic network; a structure that would generate autonomy for African Americans. Main Bout encountered resistance from the beginning. It came initially from white sportswriters. But about a month after Main Bout’s formation Ali’s draft status changed to 1-A, which meant that he had become eligible for military service in the Vietnam War. When Ali then opposed the war publicly, politicians nationwide joined the press in attacking Main Bout. The political controversy surrounding Ali made it easier for Main Bout’s economic competitors— rival promoters, closed-circuit television theater chains, and organized crime—to run the organization out of business. Money and politics were important elements of white resistance to Main Bout as was the organization’s potential as a black power symbol. Like his civil rights contemporaries, Muhammad Ali understood the importance of economic power.

  • Rethinking the Use of Antitrust Law in Combat Sports
Journal of Legal Aspects of Sport, 2018, 28, 63-96 https://doi.org/10.18060/22331 Rethinking the Use of Antitrust Law in Combat Sports Jason J. Cruz* Introduction This article will examine the application of antitrust laws in combat sports. Specifically, it will look at three recent cases involving lawsuits brought under the Sherman Act Section 1 and 2.1 First, this article will examine the January 2017 dismissal by a Los Angeles federal court of a lawsuit filed by Golden Boy Promotions (“Golden Boy”) against Al Haymon and his business entities, which started Premier Boxing Champions (“PBC”).2 It will also examine Top Rank Boxing’s (“Top Rank”) similar lawsuit against Haymon, which was settled the previous fall. Finally, it will evaluate the ongoing lawsuit between several former fighters and the Ultimate Fighting Championships (“UFC”). While each lawsuit has its own set of facts, the conditions and marketplace for combat sports is unique and the application of antitrust law has been used sparingly by boxers and promoters. These three cases filed in the last three years reflect the changing market for boxing and MMA. The paper will look at the results of the Top Rank and Golden Boy lawsuits and determine whether those cases shed any light on the outcome of the UFC case. It will also explore whether there are alternatives to regulating combat sports outside of the use of the antitrust laws. One legal commentator has opined that a federal commission would aid the monopolistic structure of a sports league. But, does that apply to individual sports like MMA or boxing? This paper will explore this issue as well as determine whether organizing fighters would address the issues complained of in the lawsuits.
