Boxing fans no longer talk about who is going to win the big fight. They talk about when it will be postponed. Those less familiar with boxing must be terribly confused or amused. This is because boxing shares little common ground with other sports. Imagine if other sports were run like boxing: The Red Sox would have canceled their games with Kansas City this weekendbecause of Carl Yastrzemski's pulled groin. Dick Howser and the Royals' team physician would have demanded their own examination of Yaz. NFL Comr. Pete Rozelle would refuse to license the Patriots to play football because of their 2-14 record.     ABSTRACT WILLIAMS, SHAWN L. B.A. UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH, 1989 M.A. CLARK ATLANTA UNIVERSITY, 1991 “The People’s Champion”: Folk Heroism and the Oral Artistry of Muhammad Au. Advisor: Professor David F. Dorsey Dissertation dated July 2000 Long after a career that was as much marred by criticism as marked by accomplishment, Muhammad Au receives considerable public acclaim for his athletic accomplishments and his humanitarianism. However, no scholarly attention has been given to this man as a literary force who, through the power of his word, impacted the consciousness of this nation and world. This dissertation examines Ali as an artist operating within the context of African and African American oral literary traditions and will explore the impact of his oratory on the sociopolitical consciousness of this country. The analysis of the oral literature of 1 Muhammad Au, which consists of his lectures, interviews, and poetry, will involve an assessment of those aspects that make it a manifestation of the verbal culture of Africa and African America. Moreover, the study illustrates the degree to which the rhetoric and verse reflects both African American national consciousness (i.e., black nationalism) and African folkioric tradition. In his creation of himself Au utilizes traditional African and African American mythoforms like the trickster, the Badman, and the culture hero. In this respect, Muhammad Au is the only athlete to emerge as an Afrocentric cultural hero. Its rise to this position gave African Americans control of boxing’s most valuable prize, the world heavyweight championship. Ali envisioned Main Bout as an economic network; a structure that would generate autonomy for African Americans. Main Bout encountered resistance from the beginning. It came initially from white sportswriters. But about a month after Main Bout’s formation Ali’s draft status changed to 1-A, which meant that he had become eligible for military service in the Vietnam War. When Ali then opposed the war publicly, politicians nationwide joined the press in attacking Main Bout. The political controversy surrounding Ali made it easier for Main Bout’s economic competitors— rival promoters, closed-circuit television theater chains, and organized crime—to run the organization out of business. Money and politics were important elements of white resistance to Main Bout as was the organization’s potential as a black power symbol. Like his civil rights contemporaries, Muhammad Ali understood the importance of economic power.

Cruz* Introduction This article will examine the application of antitrust laws in combat sports. Specifically, it will look at three recent cases involving lawsuits brought under the Sherman Act Section 1 and 2.1 First, this article will examine the January 2017 dismissal by a Los Angeles federal court of a lawsuit filed by Golden Boy Promotions (“Golden Boy”) against Al Haymon and his business entities, which started Premier Boxing Champions (“PBC”).2 It will also examine Top Rank Boxing’s (“Top Rank”) similar lawsuit against Haymon, which was settled the previous fall. Finally, it will evaluate the ongoing lawsuit between several former fighters and the Ultimate Fighting Championships (“UFC”). While each lawsuit has its own set of facts, the conditions and marketplace for combat sports is unique and the application of antitrust law has been used sparingly by boxers and promoters. These three cases filed in the last three years reflect the changing market for boxing and MMA. The paper will look at the results of the Top Rank and Golden Boy lawsuits and determine whether those cases shed any light on the outcome of the UFC case. It will also explore whether there are alternatives to regulating combat sports outside of the use of the antitrust laws. One legal commentator has opined that a federal commission would aid the monopolistic structure of a sports league. But, does that apply to individual sports like MMA or boxing? This paper will explore this issue as well as determine whether organizing fighters would address the issues complained of in the lawsuits.
