Riders Ramp up China's Scene 20 | Tuesday, April 27, 2021 HONG KONG EDITION | CHINA DAILY SPORTS Soaked in success NFL Mahomes: Injury can help me improve By MURRAY GREIG [email protected] It’s difficult to imagine a “new and improved” version of Patrick Mahomes, but the superstar quar- terback of the Kansas City Chiefs insists that could be the case when the 2021 NFL season kicks off on Sept 9. Mahomes’ 2020 season ended on a sour note when he sustained a painful turf-toe injury in the second round of the playoffs, ahead of a 31-9 loss to Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl LX. Turf toe is the result of severely bending the big toe upwards toward the top of the foot. It’s also called hyperextension, and often causes tearing of the ligaments. Mahomes underwent surgery in late February to repair the damage, and in a media conference call on the weekend said his rehab routine just might make him even better Manchester City’s Fernandinho lifts the League Cup trophy after defeating Tottenham Hotspur in Sunday’s final at Wembley, where 8,000 fans were in attendance following than before. the easing of coronavirus restrictions. 12/16/2015 STEVE MARANTZ; IF THE OTHER SPORTS WERE MORE LIKE BOXING . - The Boston Globe Archives STEVE MARANTZ; IF THE OTHER SPORTS WERE MORE LIKE BOXING . [FIRST Edition] Boston Globe (pre-1997 Fulltext) - Boston, Mass. Author: Marantz, Steve Date: May 16, 1982 Start Page: 1 Section: SPORTS Document Text In a period of a few months, boxing fans have been jilted by Cooney- Holmes, Hagler-Hearns, Leonard-Stafford and Weaver-Cobb. All of these were supposed to be major title fights before they became postponements. Cooney-Holmes is rescheduled for June 11, which leaves plenty of time for another postponement. Boxing fans no longer talk about who is going to win the big fight. They talk about when it will be postponed. Those less familiar with boxing must be terribly confused or amused. This is because boxing shares little common ground with other sports. Imagine if other sports were run like boxing: The Red Sox would have canceled their games with Kansas City this weekendbecause of Carl Yastrzemski's pulled groin. Dick Howser and the Royals' team physician would have demanded their own examination of Yaz. NFL Comr. Pete Rozelle would refuse to license the Patriots to play football because of their 2-14 record. Rozelle would say, "The Patriots have taken too many blows to the head. One more knockout could be fatal." The Patriots would change their name and go play in Rhode Island. George Steinbrenner would get the Yankees into the World Series by making a phone call to Mexico or Central America and buying them baseball's No.

  • Muhammad Ali's Main Bout: African American Economic Power and The
1 Muhammad Ali’s Main Bout: African American Economic Power and the World Heavyweight Title—by Michael Ezra Muhammad Ali announced at a press conference in January 1966 that he had formed a new corporation called Main Bout, Inc. to manage the multi-million-dollar promotional rights to his fights. “I am vitally interested in the company,” he said, “and in seeing that it will be one in which Negroes are not used as fronts, but as stockholders, officers, and production and promotion agents.” Although racially integrated, Main Bout was led by the all-black Nation of Islam. Its rise to this position gave African Americans control of boxing’s most valuable prize, the world heavyweight championship. Ali envisioned Main Bout as an economic network; a structure that would generate autonomy for African Americans. Main Bout encountered resistance from the beginning. It came initially from white sportswriters. But about a month after Main Bout’s formation Ali’s draft status changed to 1-A, which meant that he had become eligible for military service in the Vietnam War. When Ali then opposed the war publicly, politicians nationwide joined the press in attacking Main Bout. The political controversy surrounding Ali made it easier for Main Bout’s economic competitors— rival promoters, closed-circuit television theater chains, and organized crime—to run the organization out of business. Money and politics were important elements of white resistance to Main Bout as was the organization’s potential as a black power symbol. Like his civil rights contemporaries, Muhammad Ali understood the importance of economic power.

  • Rethinking the Use of Antitrust Law in Combat Sports
Journal of Legal Aspects of Sport, 2018, 28, 63-96 https://doi.org/10.18060/22331 Rethinking the Use of Antitrust Law in Combat Sports Jason J. Cruz* Introduction This article will examine the application of antitrust laws in combat sports. Specifically, it will look at three recent cases involving lawsuits brought under the Sherman Act Section 1 and 2.1 First, this article will examine the January 2017 dismissal by a Los Angeles federal court of a lawsuit filed by Golden Boy Promotions (“Golden Boy”) against Al Haymon and his business entities, which started Premier Boxing Champions (“PBC”).2 It will also examine Top Rank Boxing’s (“Top Rank”) similar lawsuit against Haymon, which was settled the previous fall. Finally, it will evaluate the ongoing lawsuit between several former fighters and the Ultimate Fighting Championships (“UFC”). While each lawsuit has its own set of facts, the conditions and marketplace for combat sports is unique and the application of antitrust law has been used sparingly by boxers and promoters. These three cases filed in the last three years reflect the changing market for boxing and MMA. The paper will look at the results of the Top Rank and Golden Boy lawsuits and determine whether those cases shed any light on the outcome of the UFC case. It will also explore whether there are alternatives to regulating combat sports outside of the use of the antitrust laws. One legal commentator has opined that a federal commission would aid the monopolistic structure of a sports league. But, does that apply to individual sports like MMA or boxing? This paper will explore this issue as well as determine whether organizing fighters would address the issues complained of in the lawsuits.

18 Established 1961 Sports Sunday, April 5, 2020 Photo of the day NFL could move 2024 Super Bowl due to Mardi Gras NEW ORLEANS: The NFL is considering moving the 2024 Super Bowl out of New Orleans due to potential conflicts with Mardis Gras that emerged with the pending expansion to a 17-game season. New Orleans, which was awarded Super Bowl LVIII during a meeting in 2018, would not lose the game entirely, but rather have it pushed back a year or two. No decision has been made. The game is scheduled for Feb. 4, but that date was set with a 16-game NFL schedule. If a week were to be added to the schedule, the game would be played on Feb. 11 — presenting a conflict with Mardi Gras begin- ning on Feb. 13. “The New Orleans Host Committee, led by the New Orleans Saints and Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation, has remained in close communication with league officials about the change to a 17-game regular season, as it relates to the city hosting Super Bowl LVIII in 2024,” Saints vice president of communica- tions Greg Bensel said in a statement on Friday. “During the bid process in 2018, it was contemplated and discussed of the possibility of an extended sched- ule based on a new CBA. The Bid Committee, the New Orleans Saints and NFL worked together to build in contingencies if a potential conflict with Mardi Gras should affect the Super Bowl date. “Mutually agreed upon terms during the bid process granted assurances that the NFL and Host Committee would explore all options for still hosting the game in 2024, or, agreeing to host the Super Bowl in a future year when the citywide calendar permits.” The 17-game schedule, per terms of the new collec- tive bargaining agreement, will be installed as the norm sometime between 2021 and 2023.

Staking a claim to reality is a strategy that is used in order to explain the lasting power of boxing to excite people and as part of the sport’s historical endurance and the cultural investment in boxing that crosses a range of fields. This article uses Oates’s distinction between drama and what is real to explore the culture of boxing and its continuing, if contradictory, appeal through different cultural forms. Boxing poses a cultural dilemma and raises questions about how something so apparently brutal retains its hold on contemporary culture. The material properties of boxing invoke the senses and prioritize corporeal, enfleshed engagement. Oates also applies the notion of authenticity to men’s boxing.
