FAUNA FLASH LC 02518 Distributed by PP Sales Forces Fax: +49-40-64214363 FAUNA FLASH LC 02518 Distributed by PP Sales Forces Fax: +49-40-64214363 This is what you might not expect from German drum & bass! Fauna Flash are the first German drum & bass outfit, who are getting props from the Metalheadz posse, for example from Grooverider and Fabio who played their dubs on their BBC 1 radio show “One In The Jungle”! All this resulted in a 12inch exclusive release on Peshays label Elementz (UK release winter 97). And a track by Fauna Flash called “At The Movies” appeared on (maybe the most respected) drum & bass compilation “Promised Land 3”. The tracks on the 12inch taster from Fauna Flash’s new album “Aquarius” are played by DJs like Peshay, Kemistry & Storm, Fabio, Grooverider, Kabuki, and are listed by Gilles Peterson’s personal charts in Straight No Chaser. The Munich based drum & bass project Fauna Flash released it’s first 12inch in 1995. Before that Christian Prommer and Roland Appel (one of Munich’s best wild-style DJs), the two members of Fauna Flash, have played drums in different band projects. Around 1992 the started doing live drum sets to ambient music at raves and in clubs. 1994 they began gathering studio experience. Roland and Christians tracks were always influenced by jazz and 80s-fusion. And although they now are specialized on drum & bass with futuristic beats and retro samples you can still tell where their roots are. Since their first release on Compost Records in 1995 Fauna Flash became Germany’s first and most respected drum & bass live PA. They have been booked for occasions like the Montreux Jazz Festival, “The Future Sound Of Jazz”-tour, the I-D-Party in Munich, WMF in Berlin and the PopKomm in Cologne. You can also catch them doing their live gigs with sequencers, drum-machines, keyboard, FX and additional live drums all over clubs in Europe. And as NME (UK) once wrote “Fauna Flash have solved one of the great puzzles of the late-20th Century: how to take the excitement and energy of drum & bass on record and translate it to a ‘live’ setting. And as a result, they’re going to be lauded and adored wherever they go. Fact!” If you can’t catch them in person you can hear their dubplates being played by DJs like Peshay, Fabio, Grooverider, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Rainer Trüby and many others. Fauna Flash‘s often strangely named tracks like “Please May I Sniff Your Klompen Kloqqen” are featured on many well known compilations like “Lytic Cocktail” and ”The Future Sound Of Jazz” Vol. 2, 3, 5 and 6 on Compost Records, “Furry Logic” and “Essential Drum & Bass” on Hypnotic, “The Freestyle Files” on K7, “Connected - Continental Breaks And Beats Vol.1” on GAP, “Sounds Like Trip Hop Vol. 1” on Leguan, “Sunflower” on BMG and on the third “Promised Land” mixed by Peshay. They have also done remixes for Tosca (R. Dorfmeister), which is featured on the remix album, Four Ears, Fon-Kin and Beanfield. Recently Fauna Flash teamed up with former A Forest Mighty Black-member Rainer Trüby for a side project called Trüby Trio. Together they have done a track for “The Future Sound Of Jazz Vol.4” and have remixed Frederic Galliano (F-Communications), Tab Two and Beanfield. Their debut 12inch ”Galicia” is released on Compost Records. The newest track of Trüby Trio, ”Prima Vera” is on CD V.A. ”Glücklich”-Vol. III (Compost 055-2) and on the B- Side of ”Brazil Selection ”Ye Mele” (Compost 056-1). Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 Abstract This dissertation explores the idea of electronica as a descendent of electronic dance music, which, although embodying many related aesthetic qualities, operates within a different set of musical values. This needs to be understood in the context of how dance music's character, form and modes of performance relate to its specific cultural function. Repetitive beats (as espoused by house and techno in particular) comprise part of the cultural experience of rave. In combination with drug technologies and an ethos of collectivity, rave encapsulates a set of political phenomena that are entrenched within the formal and textural priorities of dance music. I discuss how modes of reception are affected by changes in these priorities, and to what extent post-dance music neglects the physicality that defines the political dimension of dance music's relationship to the body.

Nymfo Commercial Suicide / Metalheadz / C.I.A / Samurai Music A true DJ at heart with many years experience under his belt, Dutch DJ/producer Nymfo has established himself as a strong presence in the Drum and Bass scene with his skills in the studio as well as on the decks. Standout singles for Commercial Suicide, Metalheadz and Critical Modulations have made his name synonymous with tough, techno- tinged dancefloor drum & bass, adding to a reputation built at his own nights Red Zone and Breek in Eindhoven. Now in 2012 he is set to pushing his sound and profile further with his debut album ‘Characters’ set for release on Commercial Suicide in June. Twice voted ‘Best Dutch DJ’ in the past few years, Amsterdam-based Nymfo (aka Bardo Camp) may be no newcomer to drum & bass but has re- cently established himself amongst its most promising production talents. With a versatile and infectious style, his tracks have already won support across the scene from the likes of Goldie, Friction, Fabio, Hype, BSE, Teebee, Klute, Doc Scott, S.P.Y, Commix, Kasra, Logistics and more “I started as a DJ when I was 14, but soon after that I started to promote as well. I liked this from day one already. I wanted to produce, but was very lazy most of the time. After I met Icicle, the producing part was getting more interesting for me. He gave me lots of tips and tricks, so it was easier for me to start.” Nymfo’s breakthrough came in 2007, with releases on Shogun Ltd, Renegade Hardware and a 12” for Critical alongside Icicle.

  • A Proposed Typology of Sampled Material Within Electronic Dance Music1 Feature Article Robert Ratcliffe Manchester Metropolitan University (UK)
A Proposed Typology of Sampled Material within Electronic Dance Music1 Feature Article Robert Ratcliffe Manchester Metropolitan University (UK) Abstract The following article contains a proposed typology of sampled material within electronic dance music (EDM). The typology offers a system of classification that takes into account the sonic, musical and referential properties of sampled elements, while also considering the technical realisation of the material and the compositional intentions of the artist, producer or DJ. Illustrated with supporting examples drawn from a wide variety of artists and sub-genres, the article seeks to address the current lack of research on the subject of sample-based composition and production, and provides a framework for further discussion of EDM sampling practices. In addition, it demonstrates how concepts and terminology derived from the field of electroacoustic music can be successfully applied to the study and analysis of EDM, resulting in an expanded analytical and theoretical vocabulary. Keywords: EDM, sample, sampling, musical borrowing, production, composition, electroacoustic, mimesis, transcontextuality, spectromorphology, source bonding Robert Ratcliffe is an internationally recognised composer, sonic artist, EDM musicologist and performer. He completed a PhD in composition and musicology funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council at Keele University, UK. He has developed a hybrid musical language and compositional technique through the cross-fertilisation of art music and electronic

With more than 17 years of DJ-ing experience behind him, KIAT extended successfully into music production. Often intricately programmed with deep grooves hidden behind warm detroit synths and strung together by dubby bass-lines and crafted hip-hop breaks, it is no wonder that after opening for Goldie at Homeclub, Singapore, his tunes caught Goldie’s attention and were immediately courted for release on the Metalheadz's Rufige. KIAT's tunes are now sought after by the top shelf DJs in the scene - Goldie, Doc Scott, Marky, Marcus Intalex, A-sides, S.P.Y., Storm , Amit , Digital , Alleycat , Bailey, Vapour, Gremlinz, London Electricty and Fabio. The Singaporean has also been featured as "Leader of the Nu-Skool" in recognised international drum & bass magazines KNOWLEDGE and ATM, and his tracks went on air on BBC's 'Essential mix' on 1XTRA, BBC's online urban music radio station.
