Nymfo Commercial Suicide / Metalheadz / C.I.A / Samurai Music Nymfo Commercial Suicide / Metalheadz / C.I.A / Samurai Music A true DJ at heart with many years experience under his belt, Dutch DJ/producer Nymfo has established himself as a strong presence in the Drum and Bass scene with his skills in the studio as well as on the decks. Standout singles for Commercial Suicide, Metalheadz and Critical Modulations have made his name synonymous with tough, techno- tinged dancefloor drum & bass, adding to a reputation built at his own nights Red Zone and Breek in Eindhoven. Now in 2012 he is set to pushing his sound and profile further with his debut album ‘Characters’ set for release on Commercial Suicide in June. Twice voted ‘Best Dutch DJ’ in the past few years, Amsterdam-based Nymfo (aka Bardo Camp) may be no newcomer to drum & bass but has re- cently established himself amongst its most promising production talents. With a versatile and infectious style, his tracks have already won support across the scene from the likes of Goldie, Friction, Fabio, Hype, BSE, Teebee, Klute, Doc Scott, S.P.Y, Commix, Kasra, Logistics and more “I started as a DJ when I was 14, but soon after that I started to promote as well. I liked this from day one already. I wanted to produce, but was very lazy most of the time. After I met Icicle, the producing part was getting more interesting for me. He gave me lots of tips and tricks, so it was easier for me to start.” Nymfo’s breakthrough came in 2007, with releases on Shogun Ltd, Renegade Hardware and a 12” for Critical alongside Icicle. Solo releases for Criti- cal and Crunch soon followed, with ‘Franky Mountain’ (alongside Icicle) earning a prestigious Ram release on the ‘Dimensions 3’ EP. Further honing his sound and remaining versatile, Nymfo stepped up with singles for CIA, Inneractive, Samurai Music and 31 Records before really hitting his stride in 2010. With a potent combination of powerful beats and hypnotic techno-influenced grooves, a guest appearance on Black Sun Empire’s LP (‘Kempi) plus two strong singles for Commercial Suicide (‘Matchstick b/w Bionic Fingers’) and Critical Modulations (‘Try To Forget b/w Au- tonomous Robot’) set dancefloors blazing worldwide and marked Nymfo as a name to remember. In 2011, the ‘Double Dutch’ EP for Commercial Suicide again made a very potent statement of intent with all 4 tracks setting dancefloors alight for months before and after release. It was obvious Nymfo’s talent had matured to the point where he was ready to design an album, and Commercial Suicide was the natural home for his sound. An accomplished DJ with a diverse selection, Nymfo has captivated crowds at festivals such as Lowlands and toured worldwide to destinations including New Zealand and South Africa. With years of experience promoting his own events, he’s held residencies at Red Zone (which he ran to- gether with Martyn for over 10 years) and Breek in Eindhoven yet Nymfo remains keener than ever to reach new places and take his music further. 2012 is set to be the year where this Dutch powerhouse makes a musical mark that will push him further into the upper echelon of Drum and Bass Producers with his much anticipated debut album ‘Characters’ for Klute’s Commercial Suicide label. Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 Abstract This dissertation explores the idea of electronica as a descendent of electronic dance music, which, although embodying many related aesthetic qualities, operates within a different set of musical values. This needs to be understood in the context of how dance music's character, form and modes of performance relate to its specific cultural function. Repetitive beats (as espoused by house and techno in particular) comprise part of the cultural experience of rave. In combination with drug technologies and an ethos of collectivity, rave encapsulates a set of political phenomena that are entrenched within the formal and textural priorities of dance music. I discuss how modes of reception are affected by changes in these priorities, and to what extent post-dance music neglects the physicality that defines the political dimension of dance music's relationship to the body.

  • A Proposed Typology of Sampled Material Within Electronic Dance Music1 Feature Article Robert Ratcliffe Manchester Metropolitan University (UK)
A Proposed Typology of Sampled Material within Electronic Dance Music1 Feature Article Robert Ratcliffe Manchester Metropolitan University (UK) Abstract The following article contains a proposed typology of sampled material within electronic dance music (EDM). The typology offers a system of classification that takes into account the sonic, musical and referential properties of sampled elements, while also considering the technical realisation of the material and the compositional intentions of the artist, producer or DJ. Illustrated with supporting examples drawn from a wide variety of artists and sub-genres, the article seeks to address the current lack of research on the subject of sample-based composition and production, and provides a framework for further discussion of EDM sampling practices. In addition, it demonstrates how concepts and terminology derived from the field of electroacoustic music can be successfully applied to the study and analysis of EDM, resulting in an expanded analytical and theoretical vocabulary. Keywords: EDM, sample, sampling, musical borrowing, production, composition, electroacoustic, mimesis, transcontextuality, spectromorphology, source bonding Robert Ratcliffe is an internationally recognised composer, sonic artist, EDM musicologist and performer. He completed a PhD in composition and musicology funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council at Keele University, UK. He has developed a hybrid musical language and compositional technique through the cross-fertilisation of art music and electronic

With more than 17 years of DJ-ing experience behind him, KIAT extended successfully into music production. Often intricately programmed with deep grooves hidden behind warm detroit synths and strung together by dubby bass-lines and crafted hip-hop breaks, it is no wonder that after opening for Goldie at Homeclub, Singapore, his tunes caught Goldie’s attention and were immediately courted for release on the Metalheadz's Rufige. KIAT's tunes are now sought after by the top shelf DJs in the scene - Goldie, Doc Scott, Marky, Marcus Intalex, A-sides, S.P.Y., Storm , Amit , Digital , Alleycat , Bailey, Vapour, Gremlinz, London Electricty and Fabio. The Singaporean has also been featured as "Leader of the Nu-Skool" in recognised international drum & bass magazines KNOWLEDGE and ATM, and his tracks went on air on BBC's 'Essential mix' on 1XTRA, BBC's online urban music radio station.

CENTRAL PROJECTION WEST COAST MINI TOUR 2007 // PRESS KIT ARTISTS AVAILABLE:- GALAXI - TIDAL - JAY LE ROC MC SMILEE - PETE RANN DEEP + PROGRESSIVE DRUM 'N' BASS CENTRAL PROJECTION 2007 // WEST COAST TOUR | PRESS KIT The Central Projection collective consists of DJ's / Producers Tidal, Jay Le Roc & MC Smilee. It is the name given to the group and also the name for their deep drum ‘n’ bass night called 'Central Projection'. The night is intrinsically linked with Tidal + Galaxi's Advection music Imprint, which together has already featured in Knowledge Mag (September '06) and again in (January '07). Central Projection has also featured as the 'Best night in the Midlands' in July's DJ Mag 2005. On an International level, DJ Galaxi from Advection Music and Pete Rann (Good Looking Records) also join part of the roster exclusively for the ‘Central Projection USA / Europe tours’. The original unit formed back in Summer 2004, in an effort to put on regular 'Deep + Progres- sive' drum 'n' bass nights in the Midlands (UK). The intention was never to become promoters, but in effect they had to create a scene to play out at. This had resulted in the team organising a string of successful nights in Birmingham City. Later on in 2004 Central Projection were honoured to host their first residency @ Progression Sessions alongside the Good Looking Records Crew. LTJ Bukem & MC Conrad, in Birmingham November 2004 @ The Medicine Bar. The residency continued in 2005 which saw DJ Galaxi perform as a special guest alongside Catch 22, LTJ Bukem & MC Conrad and Central Projection.

FAUNA FLASH LC 02518 Distributed by PP Sales Forces Fax: +49-40-64214363 This is what you might not expect from German drum & bass! Fauna Flash are the first German drum & bass outfit, who are getting props from the Metalheadz posse, for example from Grooverider and Fabio who played their dubs on their BBC 1 radio show “One In The Jungle”! All this resulted in a 12inch exclusive release on Peshays label Elementz (UK release winter 97). And a track by Fauna Flash called “At The Movies” appeared on (maybe the most respected) drum & bass compilation “Promised Land 3”. The tracks on the 12inch taster from Fauna Flash’s new album “Aquarius” are played by DJs like Peshay, Kemistry & Storm, Fabio, Grooverider, Kabuki, and are listed by Gilles Peterson’s personal charts in Straight No Chaser. The Munich based drum & bass project Fauna Flash released it’s first 12inch in 1995. Before that Christian Prommer and Roland Appel (one of Munich’s best wild-style DJs), the two members of Fauna Flash, have played drums in different band projects. Around 1992 the started doing live drum sets to ambient music at raves and in clubs. 1994 they began gathering studio experience. Roland and Christians tracks were always influenced by jazz and 80s-fusion. And although they now are specialized on drum & bass with futuristic beats and retro samples you can still tell where their roots are. Since their first release on Compost Records in 1995 Fauna Flash became Germany’s first and most respected drum & bass live PA. They have been booked for occasions like the Montreux Jazz Festival, “The Future Sound Of Jazz”-tour, the I-D-Party in Munich, WMF in Berlin and the PopKomm in Cologne.

  • Rumble in the Jungle: the Invisible History of Drum'n'bass
1 Rumble In The Jungle: The Invisible History of Drum’n’Bass Steven Quinn Transformations, No. 3 (May 2002) http://www.cqu.edu.au/transformations ISSN 1444-377 Abstract: Drum’n’bass is a musical form that expresses the antagonisms of British identity in the 1990s and it also situates itself outside of the dominant terms of African-American expressions of black identity. It speaks of a more productive possibility in the traditional relationship between national and global polarities or public and private histories. Being at once an expression of the crucial significance of place in any characterisation of identity, it also recognises the influence of circumstances that exist outside of the narrow terms of national affiliation. Drum’n’bass represents a metonymic formulation of the long history of race and migration and its (often invisible) effects on the nature of British cultural identity in particular and popular music in general. Key terms: Drum’n’Bass, British cultural identity, Black cultural identity, electronic dance music, rave, Harry Beck, London Underground Map Sound Effects Roots don’t stay in one place. They change shape. They change colour. And they grow. There is no such thing as a pure point of origin, least of all in something as slippery as music, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t history.1 Dick Hebdige Some time in the future you open an encyclopedia, as there is a specific style of music that you want to learn more about. You flick to the section labelled ‘D’ and move through the pages until you find the entry you are looking for.

Then there's this list of '90s techno DJs still at the top of their game. Now it's time to have a look at the jungle and drum 'n' bass DJs who are still doing their thing. From Andy C selling out a week residency in under three hours to the likes of Doc Scott and Fabio getting booked for house and techno parties. Check out the mega list of those still smashing it below. Not only is Andy C still at the top of his game, his residency at London club XOYO in was one of Jungle Drum n Bass most talked-about series of parties in recent times. And guess what? If that's not evidence of a DJ riding high two decades after starting their career, I really don't know what is. British music culture - and culture in general - would be a lot less vibrant without the Jungle Drum n Bass of Goldie. From way back in the mids when he released the iconic 'Timeless' to still being capable of DJ'ing sets loaded with top-level d'n'b, the Metalheadz founder's ensured his bling-bling aesthetic has always been in the public's gaze. The album, 'Act Jungle Drum n Bass - Music For Inanimate Objects', isn't made for dark rave Jungle Drum n Bass, instead Jungle Drum n Bass downtempo, broken beat and ambient paradise with vocal features from the likes of Tyler Daley and Terri Walker.
