Sanjib Bhattacharya Manipuri Dance Exponent SANJIB BHATTACHARYA MANIPURI DANCE EXPONENT Sanjib Bhattacharya, recipient of President’s Awards from Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam in 2006 and Smt. Pratibha Patil in 2011 is an accomplished Manipuri Dance Exponent, Guru and well-known Choreographer of India and abroad. He has received his training under the tutelage of Guru Bipin Singh, Padmashri Darshana Jhaveri, Kalavati Devi, Manjushree Chaki Sircar and Mamata Shankar. He is currently an established performer of great repute having extensively performed across India and abroad. He is not only performing as a solo artist, but is also performing with eminent Gurus and Icons of Indian Classical dances like Padmavibhushan Sonal Mansingh, Padmashri Darshana Jhaveri, Padmashri Ranjana Gauhar, Sadanam Balakrishnan and other eminent gurus all over India and abroad. He runs several dance academies and institutions in India and Abroad while conducting Lecture Demonstrations and workshops regularly across the Globe. Received the Title Award “Singarmoni” from Sur Singar Samsad, Mumbai, in 1997. Received the Title Award “Nartan Visharad” from Manipuri Nartanalaya, Kolkata, in the year 1998. Received the award of Junior Fellowship for two years for the project “Tandava Lasya” from the Dept. of Culture H.R.D. New Delhi. Received Production Grant from the Ministry of Tourism & Culture, New Delhi, for the Productions “Jeevan Darpan” and “Poonascha.” Regularly performing in a lead role with Padmavibhushan Sonal Mansingh in her various productions like “Krishna”, “Swaralayamadhuri”, “Kumarsambhavam”, “Nayika”, etc. Selected as the Indian dance representative for the prestigious Asia Pacific Cultural Exchange Programme organized and hosted by The University of California, Los Angeles. Invited by Kala Bharti (Montreal, Canada) for a two month project on “How to develop Multiple Intelligence through Dance” under the title “Dance & Child.” Invited by Viva Cultura Foundation (Poland) to conduct an eighteen city tour consisting of 50 performances and 40 workshops.     EXPLOITATION, VICTIMHOOD, AND GENDERED PERFORMANCE IN RITUPARNO GHOSH’S BARIWALI Rohit K. Dasgupta and Tanmayee Banerjee Rituparno Ghosh (1961—2013) was a filmmaker, lyricist, and writer who first emerged on the cultural scene in Bengal as a copywriter at Response, a Kolkata-based advertising firm in the eighties. He made a mark for himself in the world of commercials, winning several awards for his company be- fore directing two documentaries for Doordarshan (India’s national public television). He moved into narrative film- making with the critically acclaimed Hirer Angti (Diamond Ring, 1992) and the National Award–winning Unishe April (19th April, 1995). He is credited with changing the experi- ence of cinema for the middle-class Bengali bhadrolok and 1 thus opening a new chapter in the history of Indian cinema.     CHAPTER 1 UDAY SHANKAR AND LOCATING MODERNITY In 1920, a twenty year old, handsome Indian student arrived in London to study painting at the Royal College of Art. Three years later, he made his debut at Covent Garden alongside the legendary Russian ballet dancer, Anna Pavlova, although—quite remarkably—until a few months earlier, he had little to no dance experience. His audiences in England, France, and the United States nevertheless thought he was very talented at what he did. The dancer invented a new style of dance, which purportedly represented Indian culture; his dance looked “foreign” enough that nobody doubted his claim. In the late 1920s, the dancer returned to India, and demonstrated his new style to his fellow compatriots. Most of his compatriots did not care for this new style, but a few prominent figures encouraged him to continue with what he was doing. His family and friends also supported him; some of them even joined his dance troupe as dancers and musicians, including his youngest brother, twenty years his junior. The troupe then returned to Paris. Meanwhile, India was nearing the end of its dramatic transition from a British imperial colony to a newly independent nation. When the dancer returned to settle in India in the late 1930s, he immersed himself in the current debates over India’s future identity and culture. Most people, who believed the essence of Indian culture could be found in its ancient traditions, were looking to the past for the “real” definition of national culture and identity. The dancer, however, proposed that his invented style and eclectic approach to art defined India’s culture instead.

    “Majuli is a gift to any Festival” – Tim Cornwell, Scotsman, 14th August, 2017 background The Brahmaputra takes birth in China, in western Tibet, and courses through three densely populated, energy-hungry, rapidly modernizing countries — China, India, Bangladesh — before emptying itself into the Bay of Bengal in the massive Ganges-Brahmaputra mangrove delta, the Sundarbans. The Brahmaputra basin is a part of the largest and most populated basin in the world, supporting over 80 million people and rich, rare and endangered biodiversity. What China and India do to this river will directly affect this eco- system. ‘Katha Yatra,’ is our ongoing project, which translates to “a journey of stories”. It explore this river as it enters India until it finds home in the Bay of Bengal, uncovering stories of tradition and change, of wins and losses, of old and new. Through this ‘Yatra,’ we aim to create a research-based body of knowledge of the changing Brahmaputra, encapsulating impressions and understandings of the biodiversity, art, culture, identity, development, the hopes and aspirations of the people inhabiting the banks of the Brahmaputra in the project. The project Katha Yatra is much more than our own artistic ambitions. It aims to bring together the local communities in the region practicing various art forms. Katha Yatra facilitates cultural dialogue with the people from other parts of world. Under this project we also aim to curate workshops, exhibitions, installations and live art that will stimulate people from all over the world. By hosting and curating such artistic activities/events will provide spin-off into other industries that will eventually contribute to the economy of the region.
