H REPORT FROM THE CHAIR AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Another great year at One Kids Place Children’s Treatment Centre (OKP) and 2015-2016 was a year of change and transformation on so many levels. The past year was marked with the continued commitment of the Province of Ontario to transform the delivery of services for children and youth for years to come, the retirement of two members of the Senior Leadership Team, Darlene Laferriere, Manager of Client Services and Judy Sharpe, Executive Director and the continued development of OKP’s rehabilitation services that will enhance the lives of children, youth and their families in the Districts of Nipissing, Muskoka, Parry Sound, Timiskaming and along the James Bay coast. ONTARIO SPECIAL NEEDS STRATEGY During the past year, OKP worked with its community and social services, children and youth, education and health service partners in Muskoka, Nipissing, Parry Sound; Cochrane-Timiskaming; and James Bay service planning areas to develop proposals for Coordinated Service Planning and Integrated Delivery of Rehabilitation Services. As the “coordinating agency” for coordinated service planning for the Districts of Muskoka, Nipissing and Parry Sound, OKP presented to various members of the Ministry of Children and Youth Services in January 2016 who, in turn, approved the proposal as one of the first eight in the Province to be implemented. This endorsement will have a provincial impact as the eight “early adopters” will be working in collaboration to develop a framework for the Province. In the Districts of Cochrane-Timiskaming and James Bay, OKP continues to actively work at these planning tables to assist in the endorsement of their proposals with the Ministry. At the end of the 2015-2016 fiscal year, OKP and its community partners continue to await the results of the successful submission of the Integrated Delivery of Rehabilitation Services proposal. The success of this proposal will ensure that children and youth will have seamless occupational, physiotherapy and speech and language services from birth to school exit. ONTARIO AUTISM PROGRAM In January 2014, recommendations for change to services for children and youth diagnosed with autism were presented by the Autism Spectrum Disorder Clinical Expert Committee. This Committee recommended that: • Children need to receive critical interventions sooner; • Intensive Behaviour Intervention (IBI) should be provided to children in the right developmental stage, between two to four years of age, based on scientific evidence; and • More moderate interventions, Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) need to be more flexible and intensive to meet children’s diverse needs. The Government of Ontario is investing $333M over the next five years to improve and expand autism services so that children receive the right supports at the right time. A new integrated autism program will: • Provide more children with flexible and individualized services, based on scientific evidence; • Make it easier for families to access autism services; and • Significantly reduce wait times. NORTHERN ONTARIO HERITAGE FUND CORPORATION INTERNSHIP PROGRAM (NOHFC) OKP has worked closely with the NOHFC over the past year to assist in the development of young post-secondary graduates through an internship program. This year, OKP successfully secured two internship positions: • Transition to School Therapy Assistant Intern: valuable support assisting the team in preparing high needs children and youth to be successful in a classroom setting • Loan Equipment Program Assistant Intern: Evolved, streamlined with the use of technology and completed the successful implementation of a Loan Equipment Program that will facilitate the access to specialized equipment for children and youth and their families in our communities. OKP would like to thank Darlene Laferriere and Judy Sharpe for their tireless efforts, commitment and contributions to the development of One Kids Place Children’s Treatment Centre and, most importantly, for improving the lives of the children, youth and families in our communities. Their contributions will continue to be a part of our cornerstone “For Our Kids”. Finally, to all the staff at OKP, THANK YOU for your continued pursuit of excellence, your professionalism and continued commitment to the children, youth and their families. Be proud of what you do and never give up on something you believe in.
