Governing Body Chairman's Report 2013 FAIRBAIRN COLLEGE GOVERNING BODY CHAIRMAN’S REPORT 2013 2 Dear Parents It is with pride and pleasure that I present to you the Chairman’s Report for the year 2013. I will summarise the activities at Fairbairn College during the past 12 months under the headings of the following portfolios: Contact, Academics and Examinations, Operations, Extra-Mural Activities, Culture, Pastoral and Discipline, Amenities, Information Technology and Finances. CONTACT Staffing At the end of Term 4, 2012, we said farewell to Mr Lombard and Mrs Carstens. Mr Lombard joined the staff in 2010 teaching Accounting. On the sport field Mr Lombard coached Hockey and Cricket. 2012 has been a whirlwind year for Mr Lombard: he enrolled, completed and passed an advanced diploma in finance as a part time student at the University of the Free State and got married. Mr and Mrs Lombard have planned to spend a few years in Canada from the start of this year. We thanked him for his contribution to the College. Mrs Carstens joined the College in 2006 teaching English. Mrs Carstens has been involved with numerous English Olympiads and public speaking competitions. In the latter, her learners have represented the district at provincial level and the province at national level. As mistress- in- charge of girls’ Squash, the College’s 1st team has been promoted into the premiere league of the province. Many of the 1st team members have obtained provincial colours. During the past 6 years Mrs Carstens and her register classes have collect R 242 628.74 during the Big Walk Fund Raisers. This equates to an average of R 40 438.12 per year. Well done Mrs Carstens! We wished Mrs Carstens well in her teaching position as subject head of English Additional Language at DF Malan High School this year. At the end of Term 1, 2013, we said farewell to Miss Smit. Miss Smit is pursuing a career in the South African Police Force. We thanked Miss Smit for her contribution to the College in so many spheres: the Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy departments, 1st team girls’ Tennis coach, Hockey coach, member of the Sport Management Council and Napier’s House mistress. Fairbairn wished her well. We welcomed Miss Cooke as Miss Smit’s replacement in Term 2. At the end of Term 2, 2013, we said farewell to Ms Cooke and Mr Swart. Miss Cooke was replaced by Mrs Roux. We welcome Mrs Roux back to Fairbairn College and look forward to her contribution to the Mathematics department. Mr Swart, estate manager and head of sport’s replacement for this position is still pending. Mrs le Grange is doing a sterling job as “caretaker” in the interim. Congratulations to Miss van der Merwe on her engagement during the December 2012 holidays and Mr Pienaar in the June/July 2013 holidays. 3 We congratulate Miss Els, who in March became Mrs Jordaan. We wish the couple all the best for the future. We congratulate Mrs Henning on the marriage of her daughter Leanne, (a past pupil at the College) in January 2013 as well as Mrs Ochse’s daughter Jeanne-Mari in September 2013. Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Lawson on the selection of their daughter Rochelle to the U/21 Protea Squad. The Squad represented South Africa in Singapore in February, as part of their preparations for the U/21 World Youth Championships held in Glasgow, Scotland, in August. At this Tournament, the team finished in 5th place. We are proud of our educators and learners who have excelled, yet again. The College has acquired a reputation of academic prowess: there is no doubt that we are on the right track. Fairbairn College is to be praised for: Fairbairn is to be praised for providing our past pupils with a solid and outstanding academic foundation that has prepared them more than adequately for university. The quality of the teaching that they received at Fairbairn was always top class and the ethos of academic excellence that was instilled in them has carried over into their 1st year at university. UCT Dean’s Merit List - 2012 Darryl Brown - 2nd Angela Wu - 8th Dominique de Oliveira - 20th Fairbairn has 3 past pupils (Class of 2011) in the Top 20 on the Dean’s Merit List! Furthermore: Darryl Brown: Top 1st year Chemical Engineering student. Awarded class medal. Darryl has also received a full bursary from Anglo Platinum. Vuyo Sidinile: who is studying Business Science, has received a full bursary from KPMG. Well done to Fairbairn for their part in producing quality, well-educated young people, who can go out and tackle their further studies with confidence. 2013 Learners at Fairbairn are nicknamed “mean exam-writing machines”, but this is not wholly in jest. Our focus on academic excellence is reflected by the fact that we are one of few schools who write four examinations per year. In this way, learners become familiar with the pressures of study and examination writing. Many of our learners showed their all-round academic ability by participating in the Mathematics, Science, Bioscience, English and Life Sciences Olympiads and the Tygerberg Eisteddfod. Some of their achievements were truly astounding. 5 Learners, parents and staff experienced a particularly busy second term. A full winter sports’ programme was followed. Most importantly, the academic ethos of the College was upheld through the writing of regular class tests, SBA tests and handing in assignments and projects. The term was concluded with formal examinations. At the start of Term 3, Grade 9 learners and parents were briefed regarding senior phase curriculum requirements and vital subject choices. A full examination was written at the end of this term. The 4th term awaits: after only three academic weeks, learners write the most important examination of this year. Grade 12 National Senior Certificate Examinations Our Matrics start their all-important National Senior Certificate Examinations on 28 October. We believe that they have been well prepared by their educators for these examinations. We wish them well in this important milestone in their young lives and Godspeed for the future. Academic Dinner The prestigious annual Academic Dinner was a huge success. We celebrated the academic ethos of Fairbairn College by awarding the Top 10 Academic badges to the top ten learners in each Grade as well as bursaries to the top three learners in each Grade. Our guest speaker, Bianca Howell (a past pupil of Fairbairn College), captivated and enthralled the audience with her motivational speech on “Finding your Passion”. Our scholarships of R1000, R900 and R770 are allocated to the first three places in each grade, respectively. The scholarships were as follows: Grade 8 - The L Rothman Scholarship to Himil Parshotam. Grade 9 - The L Rothman Scholarship to Mohammed Yaseen Mowzer. Grade 10 - The C Cook Scholarship to Sean Weber. Grade 11 - The A Hadjidakis Scholarship to Saadiqa Bray. Grade 12 - The E Hadjidakis Scholarship to Mohamed Hassan Moydien. OPERATIONS Assemblies Assemblies continue to be a very special part of the ethos of Fairbairn College. These gatherings remain vital in upholding school spirit and communication. The College’s rendition of the National Anthem remains particularly stirring. Founders’ Day and Water Sport Founder’s Day was celebrated on 22 February 2013. Founder’s Day was once again one of the highlights of the term. We were very privileged and proud to have Dr Barney van Dyk, who matriculated at Fairbairn in 1981, as the guest speaker. Dr van Dyk is an Orthopaedic Surgeon and guided our learners with tips on how to travel the road to success. 6 Our learners’ excellent behaviour once again made us very proud. How fortunate we are to be learners, staff members, governing body members or parents at this fine institution. We can, and must all Value Fairbairn! The Founder’s Day ceremony in the hall is usually followed by Water Sports.

30 March2017 Dear Parent/Guardian NEWSLETTER 9/17 We have reached the end of a highly successful term. So much has been achieved and we have big dreams and plans for the remainder of the year. Allow me this opportunity to thank every dedicated educator, coach and learner for their hard work and commitment. It is wonderful to see the scale of participation and the level at which we are competing now. Sport and culture have gone from strength to strength. Add to that the excellent academic results we attained last year, and you have to agree that our school is blessed with exceptional learners, educators and parents. During a recent visit by the Curro Transformation and Diversity team, we were complimented on the friendliness of our learners and staff. They noticed how learners went out of their way to greet them and to assist where they could. We also often get compliments from visitors, who work with our learners, regarding their ability to think out of the box and come up with new ideas and solutions. Schools close on Friday, 31 March at 11:00. Reports will be issued to learners on this day. Term 2 starts on Wednesday, 19 April. Educators already start on Tuesday, 18 April. Enjoy a well-deserved break with your children. May God keep you safe and may you experience a blessed Easter. STAFF MATTERS We wish to congratulate Mr Christiaan Botha who attended the North-West University of Potchefstroom’s graduation ceremony to receive his Bachelor’s Degree in Education (BEd). Issue 21 12 July 2019 12 July 2019 21 Welcome back from the cosiness of a decidedly wet winter’s break to the vibrancy of Term 3. I spoke to the high school in assembly this week about GRIT – and I wasn’t talking about the uniform suppliers, although one can see why that company is so named. Grit is the perseverance and passion to achieve long–term goals. Sometimes you will hear grit referred to as mental toughness. Angela Duckworth, a researcher at the University of Pennsylvania, suggests that grit is a strong predictor of success and ability to reach one's goals. Most things worth achieving involve huge effort and the tenacity and steadfast determination that is understood by the term ‘grit’: the ballerina who dances on bleeding toes; the Comrades athlete who forges through the agony of cramp s and blisters; the astronaut who spends decades preparing for a single mission, only to spend most of his time upside down, while his teammates walk on the moon: these know that it is grit that sees them through. History’s heroes overcame often insurmountable odds to succeed in the face of adversity: the prisoners who endured the quarries and torments of Robben Island in order to birth our nation; the Mother Theresa’s of this world who work with the poor and rejected; the cleansing surrender of Ramadan; Christ crucified. 2 12 July 2019 21 FIVE CHARACTERISTICS OF GRIT Courage Conscientiousness Perseverance Resilience Passion So we exhort our learners to leave their winter nest and take on the term with Grit: PLEASE DIARISE! FAIRBAIRN COLLEGE NEWSLETTER – 3/2015 2 October 2015 From the Headmaster At the end of Term 3 2015, I pay tribute to the different role players at the College: The Governing Body: Under the leadership of Mrs Prinsloo, the new Governing Body is looking after the interests of the parents, the learners and the staff. The Parents: It is enjoyable to interact with parents at all levels: next to the sport fields, at cultural functions, at the parent\teacher meetings and during one to one interviews. Please continue to support your children in all aspects of schooling. The Staff: I could not wish for better! The academic staff are dedicated workers who leave no stone unturned in pursuit of the College ethos of academic excellence and discipline. Also in all the other spheres of school life: pastoral, sport and culture – the staff put the interests of the learners first. The Support Staff: The receptionists, secretarial staff, school bursar, estate manager and the general workers are hard workers who always give their best. Time and time again I receive compliments of the efficiency of the front office. Our estate and sport facilities are the envy of many visiting schools. The Learners: The majority of learners are at one with the ethos of Fairbairn College. There will always be a small group of learners who have not taken ownership of “their” school. These learners are monitored closely. They will not be allowed to infringe on the rights of the learners who want to learn, or be allowed to tarnish the name of this fine institution.

The Settlers High School Term 1 Newsletter 2020 MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Settlers Family The term has come to a sudden halt in the midst of fear and the unknown. Despite our heightened concern, we need to stay positive and give hope, be responsible citizens and temper this with the facts to alleviate fear and panic. The Settlers is a very special school and a typical example of this was the weekend of 13 – 14 March. In just one weekend we celebrated and revelled in the many school activities all happening simultaneously. We received recognition from UWC as their number one feeder school, the RCL and Class Reps were away at camp honing their leadership skills, the grade 9 drama performance group were acting at the Baxter Theatre, hockey participated in three different hockey tournaments, where the teams and individual learners were applauded for their skills with no less than two man of the match awards, TSHS hosted the Top Schools Basketball Tournament of 40+ matches with our 1st team girls walking away with a gold medal, Riefqah Diedericks (Gr 12) participated in the Nedbank Essay competition and won a R60 000 bursary for her 2021 university studies and the 1st team cricket challenged The Settlers old boys team and beat them convincingly. That is Settlers in a nutshell, and then comes Monday 16 March, and we had to deal with the effect of Covid-19 and the huge impact it will have on schooling in SA. We have put in place an Academic Maintenance Plan for the extended holiday.
