Paul Barrett is a Con Colbert: 16lives fourth-year student at the University of , Ireland, majoring in English and History. The youngest person executed as part of the Rising, Con Colbert cuts a unique figure in the history of the Irish nation. Limerick Leader. Con Colbert: 16lives main argument that will encompass this article is that Con Colbert was executed in the rising, because of his high profile rather than Colbert deliberately taking the position of his commanding officer Seamus Murphy. A historiographical section concerning contemporary ideas surrounding this question will also be delved into. The proceedings of the court-martial are crucial here in delving into the mind of the British authorities to try to see their reasoning behind the execution. Much of the research done on this topic previously, is considerably uniform in their opinion of Colbert's execution. However, not much research has been done on the activities by Colbert that would have made him well known to the British authorities at the time. Firstly, much has been deliberated regarding Con Colbert, as well as the executions in The literature has discussed the fact that Colbert along with ten others, were not officially acknowledged until the start of this century. This was covered in an article in the Sunday Times inas the author indicates that this shows the disdain the British authorities had for these men. Foster Con Colbert: 16lives describes Colbert as being so deeply entranced with the nationalist cause, that he had no interest in women. The literature regarding the topic uses much of the same sources particularly from the National Archives, as well as plenty of witness statements from the Bureau of Military History, many of Con Colbert: 16lives are the same. However, much of the literature has failed to properly recognise the position or influence of his Con Colbert: 16lives Seamus Murphy. Even here, Con Colbert: 16lives is confined to two lines of text, with no in- depth analysis of his position or influence. Regarding some of the records from the time of the Rising, the views by many of his fellow combatants, are largely uniform in their opinion of why Con Colbert was executed. Christopher Byrne, a member of the , and under the battalion captained by Colbert, believes it was a case of Colbert being very prominent within society at the time. Byrne asserts that there was no change in command Con Colbert: 16lives any time during the Rising Con Colbert: 16lives Murphy and Colbert and that no uniform change occurred, owing to the large difference in stature and size of both men. Murphy was in full uniform upon the arrival of the British authorities but was simply not picked Con Colbert: 16lives by them. Per Byrne, Colbert had previously conducted Volunteer marches in the open which had raised his profile with the British authorities, even marching during WWI recruitments to deter people from signing up. This was in Con Colbert: 16lives with Murphy, who had a quiet profile, and was not very prominent in the years before the rising. As well as this, both Annie O'Brien and Lily Curran, members of Cumann na mBan, and in the company of Colbert and Murphy during the Rising, assert that Murphy was still in charge after the surrender, giving orders and even pleading with some to leave so that they not be prosecuted by the Con Colbert: 16lives authorities. This would signify that Colbert was very much aware of his fate as soon as surrender was given, not allowing Colbert much time to consult with Murphy about taking his place, and not showing Colbert as a very willing martyr. Certainly, friendships with prominent figures such as Eamonn Ceannt would make the thought of Colbert being a target already for the British Authorities a likely possibility. Historians have debated on Colbert's execution for many years - O'Callaghan's work provides the best insight of all. Irish Examiner. The Con Colbert: 16lives record Con Colbert: 16lives very brief, and the evidence given within is Con Colbert: 16lives, amounting to less than a page of written text. This would indicate the British Con Colbert: 16lives were Con Colbert: 16lives keen on quickly executing Colbert, Con Colbert: 16lives that Colbert was well known to the British authorities before the Rising. Elizabeth states that while a member of na Fianna Eireann, Colbert had stolen a union jack from the British Boy Scouts. This would eventually lead to Colbert having to go to court. This indicates that Colbert was very public in his actions against British groups, and it's likely he was prominent to those monitoring Irish Nationalist movements. Elizabeth also notes that Colbert regularly conversed in Irish, and was very open Con Colbert: 16lives the possibility of an armed conflict in the future. Judging from this witness statement, it is rightful to draw the conclusion that Colbert held a very public figure during the time of the Rising, which certainly made him a target when the Rising was over. Importantly, the witness statement made by Seamus Murphy sheds light on his role in the execution, and why he was interned and Colbert was executed. In the end, the execution of Con Colbert as part of the Rising, would appear to be a result of the prominence of Con Colbert at the time. Certainly, his contemporaries did not think of the execution as a particularly extraordinary occurrence, despite Colbert's lower rank. It can be said from looking at the evidence that Con Colbert was execution was not a willing martyrdom by Colbert, but that Colbert was resigned to his fate, knowing the problems he had previously caused the British authorities. Colbert's dedication to the Irish cause is unquestionable. Marine Biology. Electrical Engineering. Computer Science. Medical Science. Writing Tutorials. Performing Arts. Visual Arts. In Con Colbert: 16lives in , close to where Con Colbert was born and spent his childhood, a memorial to republican martyrs was erected in Neither part of this statement is factual. He was elsewhere in Dublin city centre - first in Watkins' brewery on Ardee Street and then in Jameson's distillery on Marrow-bone Lane. He was executed on 8 May. Such inaccuracies might seem harmless in themselves — and this first instance merely reflects the centrality of the GPO to how the Rising is remembered — but they are indicative of the manner in which man and myth can become one. The cumulative effect of a variety of similar errors, superficially innocuous as they may be, combined with a number of pointed and persistent misrepresentations, has been to obscure Colbert's real role in the preparations for the rebellion, in the battle itself and even in his court martial and execution. The purpose of this book is to bring as much clarity to these issues as the sources will permit, and to present as realistic a portrait as possible of what type of a person Colbert was. Colbert never consciously cultivated a reputation for himself. Others decided to do that after his execution. To encounter a historical figure is all too often to encounter fiction. The first duty of any biographer should be to afford a subject, and an audience, the appropriate complexity - in this case, to separate the man and the myth. Only then is an honest Con Colbert: 16lives of a life possible. And it should be for his life as much as for his death that Colbert is commemorated. The Rising was a spectacular display of resistance Con Colbert: 16lives the British empire near the height of its power and on an active war footing. The rebel leaders anticipated that they were striking a decisive blow in a struggle for national liberation. The Proclamation of the Republic invoked a tradition of militant resistance, envisioned an independent Ireland, and proposed a pluralist society resting Con Colbert: 16lives an anti- imperial foundation. But this was not a simple story. The political and cultural history of Ireland in the years beforeand the history of the Rising itself, remains enigmatic and it would be insensitive and irresponsible to draw simplistic conclusions, whether celebratory or condemnatory, on intricate matters. While overt republicanism and separatism were fringe phenomena during the first decade and a half of the twentieth century, subsequent events Con Colbert: 16lives demonstrate that there was an extensive Con Colbert: 16lives sympathy for radicalism that was roused by the Rising. Opposition to continuation of the Union of Con Colbert: 16lives Britain and Ireland with direct government from London was the norm, yet the primary proposal of the nationalist Con Colbert: 16lives was for no more than Home Rule, a limited measure of control over domestic affairs for a Dublin parliament. As well as constitutionalist principles, there Con Colbert: 16lives a strand of imperial sentiment running through sections of the Home Rule movement, but its moderate claim reflected realism regarding the balance of power in Anglo-Irish relations, rather than idealistic aspiration or conviction. Unionists, predominantly Protestant and with their power base in northeast Ulster, feared Home Rule as a threat Con Colbert: 16lives their political, cultural, civic, economic and religious interests. The nationalist strategy assumed that when the government eventually conceded a compromise reform, which could not be denied indefinitely, unionists would consent once convinced that it was a benign measure. This gamble, democratic as it was, failed to understand the depth of feeling inherent in the unionist — British — imperial dynamic, and was lost at Con Colbert: 16lives cost. Unionism had evolved from a more conciliatory phase earlier in the century to the point where it resolutely refused any concession. Unionists now demonstrated a readiness to defy the common will and even parliamentary opinion. It deserves all the support that can be given it.
