I was born in Monasteraden in County Sligo about five miles from Ballaghaderreen. My first recollections are Of the Lend League. As a little girl I used to go to the meetings of Tim Healy, John Dillon and William O'Brien, and stand at the outside of the crowds listening to the speakers. The substance of the speeches was "Pay no Rent". It people paid rent, organizations such as the "Molly Maguire's" and the "Moonlighters" used to punish them by 'carding them', that means undressing them and drawing a thorny bush over their bodies. I also remember a man, who had a bit of his ear cut off for paying his rent. He came to our house. idea was to terrorise them. Those were timid people who were afraid of being turned out of their holdings if they did not pay. I witnessed some evictions. As I came home from school I saw a family sitting in the rain round a small fire on the side of the road after being turned out their house and the door was locked behind them. -

TEACHERS’ NOTES PRIMARY VIRTUAL TOUR Introduction This set of Teachers’ Notes has been created by the Education Department of the National Museum of Ireland at Collins Barracks in order to aid the teaching and interpretation of the ‘Proclaiming a Republic: the 1916 Rising’ Virtual Tour. The virtual tour - Provide teachers and student with an engaging and thought-provoking learning resource based around the aims to: 1916 Easter Rising and the National Museum of Ireland’s expansive ‘Easter Week’ collection of artefacts and images. - Provoke discussion and reflection upon key themes reflected in the exhibition. These include the roles of ordinary people during the Rising, in particular children, young people and women – the choices they had to make and what motivated those choices. These Teachers’ - Provide further information about the key artefacts on each stop of the Notes aim to: Virtual Tour, as well as a brief historical context. - Suggest potential discussion points in order to aid classroom discussion, and to suggest possible solo and group activities for students to engage in, which will enhance their understanding of the material presented. - Provide teachers with the relevant curriculum links, highlighting why each section of the tour was chosen and to explain what we hope to achieve for students at each location. Themes 1. The theme of choices – what motivated those who took part in the Rising and why others did not participate? We also consider those who had no A number of themes choice but were impacted by, or caught up in the Rising. We ask students are highlighted and to think about what choices they might have made, and to consider the explored throughout complexities inherent in these choices. -

The youngest person executed as part of the Rising, Con Colbert cuts a unique figure in the history of the Irish nation. Limerick Leader. Con Colbert: 16lives main argument that will encompass this article is that Con Colbert was executed in the rising, because of his high profile rather than Colbert deliberately taking the position of his commanding officer Seamus Murphy. A historiographical section concerning contemporary ideas surrounding this question will also be delved into. The proceedings of the court-martial are crucial here in delving into the mind of the British authorities to try to see their reasoning behind the execution. Much of the research done on this topic previously, is considerably uniform in their opinion of Colbert's execution. However, not much research has been done on the activities by Colbert that would have made him well known to the British authorities at the time. Firstly, much has been deliberated regarding Con Colbert, as well as the executions in The literature has discussed the fact that Colbert along with ten others, were not officially acknowledged until the start of this century. This was covered in an article in the Sunday Times inas the author indicates that this shows the disdain the British authorities had for these men. -

The Role of Handball in 1916 Paul Fitzpatrick It was a humdrum Easter Monday afternoo n and, in a handball alley at Marino in the shadow of Croke Park, a young Christian Brother, William Allen, was at play. From nowhere, it has been recorded, the order’s Superior General, Brother Willis, arrived wearing an anxious expression. There was trouble in O’Connell St, he told the handballers – get out of town. So began the Easter Rising. In the decades to come, ‘WP’ Allen would document it; in time, over the decades, his personal library stretched to over 30,000 items and would become one of the greatest primary sources at the State’s disposal. But on that day, he was just another average Joe, a teacher in a school which had produced five of the insurgents, scuttling for cover back to base. What was the state of play for handball in 1916? At the time, it was organised on an ad hoc basis. There were more players (hundreds of thousands played recreationally) but far less championships. In fact, the first hardball and softball championships wouldn’t begin until 1925. Handball had been a professional pursuit for the best players, who issued grand challenges to their rivals in the press at the time, but for the most part, competitively, it was played for silver cups and gold medals, maybe a suit of clothes, in pre-arranged one-off fixtures, much in the manner of prize fights. In August of 1916, for example, a “challenge contest” was advertised for St Colman’s College in Fermoy for the “Junior Championship of Munster”. -

Waterford Aideen Barry Mark Clare Amanda Coogan Anthony Haughey Dragana Jurisic Sarah Pierce Curated by Dr Emily Mark-FitzGerald School of Art History and Cultural Policy, University College Dublin Edward Said drew a classic distinction between ‘beginnings’ and ‘origins’, arguing that the former arose from human action through the ‘intentional production of meaning’; while the latter required a myth claiming filiation with the divine.1 Traversing the two, and making visible the conceits of commemoration that have shaped the legacy of 1916, are the central concerns of The Museum of August Destiny. The Museum manufactures a temporary site of memory where the social and political aspirations laid out in the 1916 Proclamation are recalled and re-evaluated. The Proclamation occupies an imposing and iconic place in the national imagination – both as material document of history, and as a visionary (and militant) declaration of Irish sovereignty. It is also a document that embodies a series of paradoxes. It was unauthored—signed collectively by teachers, writers, poets, a musician, a trade unionist—but with no single individual named as creator. It was a cheaply printed physical document with makeshift typographic solutions, which now commands stratospheric prices at auction. Focused primarily on a set of strategic locations in the heart of Dublin, it was directed by the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB) and carried out by a militant force of no more than 1,600 men and women. The Rising began when rebels seized several buildings in Dublin city-centre, including the General Post Office (GPO), from where Patrick Pearse later that day proclaimed the establishment of the Irish Republic. -
Who Were the 'Extremists'?
Who were the ‘Extremists’? Pierce Beasley (Piaras Béaslaí) (1881-1965) was a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood and the Irish Volunteers. He worked as a freelance journalist, having been sacked from the Evening Telegraph in 1914 due to his separatist activities. He was also the producer of na h-Aisteoirí, a company of Gaelic amateur actors heavily involved in the IRB. During the Rising, he was deputy commanding officer of the 1 st Dublin Battalion under Edward Daly. He went on to become a Sinn Féin MP in 1918, but left politics following independence. Bealsaí is mentioned in 108 of the 251 reports. Thomas Byrne (1877-1962) was a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood and a captain in the Irish Volunteers. A veteran of the Second Boer War, where he had fought in the Irish Brigade with Major John MacBride, he led the Maynooth Volunteers to the GPO during the Easter Rising. Following independence, Byrne was appointed Captain of the Guard at Dáil Éireann by Michael Collins. Byrne is mentioned in 108 of the 251 reports, primarily as a frequent visitor to the shop of Thomas J Clarke. Thomas J Clarke (1858-1916), known as Tom, was a central figure in the leadership of the Irish Republican Brotherhood and helped to found the Irish Volunteers in 1913. A key figure in planning the Rising, he was the first to sign the Proclamation of the Irish Republic and was shot in the first round of executions at Kilmainham Jail on 3 May 1916. Clarke lived at 10 Richmond Avenue, Fairview and owned a tobacconist’s shop at 75a Parnell Street which was a hub of IRB activity in the city. -

09.0 The Executed 09.6 Con Colbert Cornelius (Con) Colbert (1888-1916) was born at Monaleena, Castlemahon, Co. Limerick, the son of Michael Colbert, a small farmer, and Nora MacDermott. While he was still a child the family moved to the Athea area in West Limerick where his father farmed some old family land at Templeathea. He attended Athea national school and for a brief period the national school at Kilcolman near Ballysteen. In early adolescence, he went to live with a sister in Dublin where he received secondary education at the Christian Brothers’ schools at Saint Mary’s Place and North Richmond Street (O’Connell’s Schools). When he had completed his secondary education he secured a clerkship at Kennedy’s bakery in Parnell Street where he worked until his death. Both sides of Colbert’s family had a tradition of nationalist and Fenian involvement, and he became politically aware from an early age. He developed an interest in local and national history, and picked up expressions in Irish from some of the old people around West Limerick where the language had not yet entirely died out. He is also said to have become a devout Roman Catholic from early on. In Dublin, he joined the Gaelic League and assiduously attended Irish classes, lectures and the various cultural and social activities provided for members. He enrolled in Fianna Éireann, the scouting organisation for boys first established by Bulmer Hobson in 1903 and revived by Hobson and Countess Markievicz in August 1909. He was a model member of Fianna Éireann: he applied 1 himself to gaining proficiency in its various activities and skills which included drill, marching, scouting, signalling, map-reading, first aid and the use of small arms.
