The assumption that the Communist dictatorship in the German Democratic Republic 11 (GDR) drove many people to suicide has persisted for decades, and it is still evident in academic 12 and public discourse. Yet, high suicide rates in eastern Germany, which can be traced back to the 13 nineteenth century, cannot be a result of a particular political system. Be it monarchy, 14 democracy, fascism, or socialism, the frequency of suicide there did not change significantly. In 15 fact, the share of politically motivated suicides in the GDR amounts to only 1–2 per cent of the 16 total. Political, economic, or socio-cultural factors did not have a significant impact on suicide 17 rates. An analysis of two subsets of GDR society that were more likely to be affected by 18 repression—prisoners and army recruits—further corroborates this: there is no evidence of a 19 higher suicide rate in either case. Complimentary to a quantitative approach “from above,” a qualitative analysis “from below” not only underlines the limited importance of repression, but 20 also points to a regional pattern of behavior linked to cultural influences and to the role of 21 religion—specifically, to Protestantism. Several factors nevertheless fostered the persistence of 22 an overly politicized interpretation of suicide in the GDR: the bereaved in the East, the media in 23 the West, and a few victims of suicide themselves blamed the regime and downplayed important 24 individual and pathological aspects.

    INTRODUCTION The Surreal without Surrealism The time will come, if it is not already come, when the surrealist enterprise:': will be studied and evaluated, in the history of literature, as an adventure of hope. —Wallace Fowlie, Age of Surrealism Indubitably, Surrealism and the GDR are closely connected, and are more closely related to each other than one might think. When, for example, one listens to the recollections and reads the memoirs of those who lived in this country, apparently no other conclusion can be drawn. Life in the East German Communist state had a surrealistic disposition, was associated with the grotesque, absurd and irrational. Admittedly, Surrealism did not exist in the GDR. Not only are the insights of Hans Magnus Enzensberger and Peter Bürger on the death of the historical avant-garde convincing and applicable to the GDR;1 it is also significant that no German artist or writer who considered him- or herself a Surrealist prior to 1945 returned from exile to settle in the SBZ or the GDR. Most of the celebrities of German Surrealism during the Weimar Republic were forced to go into exile or did not return to Germany at all. Max Ernst, for example, remained living in the USA, and then in 1953 moved to his wife’s old quarters in Paris; Hans Arp decided to live in Switzerland, and in 1949 chose the USA as his home country. Others who had lived through and survived Hitler’s Germany had to face the harsh demands of National Socialist cultural politics that downgraded the avant-garde to the status of Entartete Kunst, or degenerate art, and sidelined and even terrorized its representatives.

Mir als interimistisch gewählte Präsidentin obliegt es, eine Brücke zu schlagen zwischen dem vierjährigen Präsidium von Dieter Bachmann, dem wir die wiedergewonnene Freiheit für sein schrift- stellerisches Schaffen von Herzen gönnen und dem neuen Präsidenten, Prof. Thomas Geiser, der sein Amt vorbehältlich seiner Wahl in diesem Jahr an- treten wird. Die Mitgliederversammlung des Fördervereins fand in diesem Jahr in Zürich statt (12.5.2014). Als besonderes Erlebnis wurde dem Vorstand und den Vereinsmitgliedern im Anschluss an den offiziellen Teil die Teilnahme an einer Aufzeichnung des „Literaturclubs“ geboten. Im „Papiersaal“ konnte man einem der letzten „Literaturclubs“ unter der Leitung von Stefan Zwei- fel beiwohnen und gespannt den lebendigen und kontroversen Diskussio- nen zu ausgewählten Werken der deutschsprachigen Literatur folgen. An der Mitgliederversammlung wurden auch die Nachlässe präsentiert, de-ren Erschliessung ansteht; der Vorstand hat schliesslich drei Stipendien zu Paul Ilg (Lisa Hurter), Hermann Burger (Elias Zimmermann) und Gonzague de Reynold (Kristian Lasak) vergeben. I understand cultural memory as dynamic, multifaceted, and as a widely contestational interplay of past and present in socio-cultural contexts. The making of cultural memory involves various participants and allows us to examine the nexus between individual remembering and culturally mediated memory. Culturally mediated memory appears as a process of the representation and manifestation of the past in the present. By studying the mediality of ‘present pasts,’ we gain an understanding of how the past is remembered and how it is mediated via cultural objects in the present.

He stud- ied German and English literature as well as European history and philosophy at the universities in Tübingen and Munich from 1954 to 1960, concluding his studies with a dissertation on the Austrian novelist Hermann Broch’s great novel The Death of Vergil. Although he could not know it at the time, this work foretold Walter’s eventual move to Princeton, where Broch had written much of the novel while living in the home of Erich and Lillie von Kahler on Evelyn Place. Walter worked as the director of the academic division of the Piper Verlag, a prominent publishing house in Munich, from 1961 through 1966, when he accept- ed a position as an assistant professor at Pennsylvania State University. After three years at Penn State, he was appointed associate professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Following a year as visiting pro- fessor at Stanford University in 1970–71, he was appointed professor of German at the University of Maryland–College Park.
