UNIVERSITY ROYAL NAVAL UNITS There are 16 University Royal Naval Units (URNU) across the UK, in addition to a new Virtual URNU, training a range of undergraduates from local universities. The URNU can offer you internationally recognised training, which includes leadership, militarisation and marinisation, along with opportunities to immerse yourself in a variety of sports and adventurous training. Even better, all training is designed to fit around your academic commitments, without any call-up liability or obligation to join the Royal Navy. Each unit has a strong team ethos that helps make members’ time with the Unit some of the best of their university lives. Students leave the URNU equipped with the skills, confidence and leading edge in whatever path they choose to follow. “Learn today, lead tomorrow.” What can I expect? A fun and enjoyable experience, making a solid group of similar-minded friends for life. An opportunity to learn about, and experience, life in the Royal Navy. Opportunities to deploy on various maritime platforms, visiting coastal ports around the UK and possibly further afield! Sports and adventurous training – Activities such as rugby, hockey, netball, football, climbing, sky diving, skiing, mountaineering, mountain biking, paddleboarding, kayaking, hang-gliding and the opportunity to take part in the Inter-URNU Sports Weekend. Marinisation training - Learn to live and work at sea. Pay - for all the training you undertake. Employability - The URNU will provide you with a variety of transferable skills, experiences and qualifications that will help you in your future careers. You will earn a Level 4 Certificate in Leadership and Management from the Chartered Management Institute. Meet and host military & civilian VIPs at functions and formal dinners. Attend Royal Navy acquaints, visiting Royal Navy establishments and ships around the UK. You will be issued with the required Royal Navy Uniform for all evolutions. Please Note: URNU Officer Cadets are not eligible for deployment on operations, and there is no requirement to join the full time RN or Reserves. What commitment would I need to give to the URNU? Attending regular weekly training nights at your assigned Unit. Attendance at formal events, e.g. an annual reception and military ceremonies. Completing at least one deployment. Taking part in a minimum of 2 URNU training weekends during the year. Can I get paid? Yes. You will be paid for attendance at recognised URNU events such as: Militarisation; Marinisation; Command, Leadership & Management; and Adventurous Training & Sport. Joining the URNU The URNU recruits at the beginning of the academic year, and throughout the year, as positions become available. Selection for these places is through an application and interview process. An initial application form can be completed online at www.royalnavy.mod.uk/URNU. The contact details for each unit and details on how to complete an Expression of Interest form are also on the final page of this brochure. Once the application is complete, candidates will be invited to attend a no obligation Introduction Evening, which will give them the opportunity to meet the Commanding Officer, Training Team and current URNU students while learning more about the Unit. At the end of the evening, you will be invited to apply for one of the available interview slots. Interviews with the Commanding Officer, a member of URNU staff and a member of the University Staff, will take place in the first few weeks of the academic term. Successful applicants will be offered a position within the unit as a Probationary Officer Cadet, to be upgraded to full member on completion of recruitment requirements, including the swim test and medical.
