UNIVERSITY ROYAL NAVAL UNITS Each of the 15 University Royal Naval Units (URNU) trains a range of undergraduates from local universities. Training includes leadership, seamanship and navigation, without any call up liability or obligation to join the Royal Navy. Each unit has a strong team ethos, with a work hard, play hard attitude that helps make members’ time with the unit some of the best of their university lives. Students leave the URNU equipped with the skills, confidence and leading edge in whatever path they choose to follow. What can I expect? An instant, solid group of similar-minded friends. Travel – 10-12 days of Easter and summer deployment, visiting coastal ports around the UK, France, Spain, Belgium, Holland & the Channel Islands. Sports and adventurous training - Rugby, hockey, netball, football, climbing, sky diving, mountaineering, mountain biking, hang-gliding and the opportunity to take part in the Inter-URNU Sports Weekend (in conjunction with the 14 other URNU’s). Seamanship training - Learn sea navigation, to drive & keep the ship in order. Flying Training – Opportunity to apply for two weeks at Flying Camp at RNAS Yeovilton. Pay - for all the training you undertake: training nights & sea time. Employability - The URNU will provide you with a variety of skills and experiences to be proud of. You will earn a Level 5 Certificate in Leadership and Management from the Chartered Management Institute. Meet and host military & civilian VIPS at functions and formal dinners. You will be issued with Royal Navy Uniform for all occasions. Please Note: URNU Midshipmen are not eligible for deployment on operations, and there is absolutely NO requirement to join the full time RN or Reserves. What commitment would I need to give to the URNU? Attending regular training nights at the Unit. Attendance at 2 formal events - an Annual Dinner and Annual Reception. Completing at least one ship’s deployment (10-15 days) at Easter or in the summer. Taking part in 3 sea training weekends during the year. Can I get paid? Yes. You will be paid for any formal attendance such as drill nights, functions, sea time and deployments. This will include any RN representative sport. Joining the URNU ‘The URNU recruits at the beginning of the academic year and throughout the year as positions become available. Selection for these places is through an application and interview process. An Initial Application form can be completed at Freshers’ Fairs or directly with each unit. The contact details for each unit are on the final page of this brochure. Once the application is complete, candidates will be invited to attend a no obligation Introduction Evening, which will give candidates an opportunity to meet the Commanding Officer, current URNU students, and learn more about the unit. At the end of the evening you will be invited to apply for one of the available interview slots. Interviews will take place in the first few weeks of the academic term, and if you are selected we will be in contact to arrange your slot. Interviews will be conducted by the Commanding Officer, a member of Britannia Royal Naval College staff and a member of the University Staff. Successful applicants will be offered a position within the unit as a Probationary Officer Cadet, to be upgraded to full member on completion of swim test and medical.
