Ileana married Archduke Anton of Austria and lived in Sonnberg, Austria. She gave birth to six children, whom she moved in 1944 to Romania. She founded a hospital there in memory of her mother, Queen Marie and worked with the war-wounded and the surrounding population until 1948, when the Romanian royal family left the country for exile. In 1961, Mother Alexandra entered her novitiate at the Monastery of the Veil in Bussy-en-Othe, France. She took orders in 1967 and was sent to the United States to found an all English-speaking monastery open to women of all ethnicities. Mother Alexandra became the first abbess of the Orthodox Monastery of the Transfiguration in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania. • Return of the Kings. Institutionalization of the Royal Families in the Republics of Romania and Montenegro in the 21St Century
Marcin M. Wiszowaty* Uniwersytet Gdański RETURN OF THE KINGS. INSTITUTIONALIZATION OF THE ROYAL FAMILIES IN THE REPUBLICS OF ROMANIA AND MONTENEGRO IN THE 21ST CENTURY 1. In my latest book I took note of the phenomenon which I defined as a “re- publican paradigm in the research on the political systems of modern states”. This trend is very often encountered in the process of analyzing political systems. On one hand, it consist in omitting or marginalizing all characteristic elements of the monarchy, which do not have their republican equivalent, and on the other hand it focuses on democratic aspects of political system, ignoring its monarchic or republican character. This trend mainly results from a commonly-accepted as- sumption, that the so-called constitutional monarchy is only a stage on its way to the inevitable transformation of a political system from the absolute monarchy into the pure republic, which makes it only a transitional form. It brings about the fact that in case of monarchic states, the only subject of political system analysis is usually the monarch himself, as the last remnant of the past monarchy, whereas the other institutions of the monarchic system are ignored in the belief that they constitute insignificant relics, or even that they have already turned fully into the “republican” character.1 One of the consequences of the above-mentioned inter- pretation is a gradual replacement of a traditional categorization into “republics” or “monarchies” by classifying the states as “democratic” or “undemocratic”. As a result, the two categories will encompass both monarchies and republics, ulti- mately reducing the fundamental differences between political systems.

  • ENJOYABLE FLAVOURS Adventurous Quests for Kadarka, Brandy and Beer DKMT Euroregion Introduction
ENJOYABLE FLAVOURS Adventurous quests for kadarka, brandy and beer DKMT Euroregion Introduction The tourism of the 21st century is characterised by the quest for adventures, the desire for cognition and the active participation in programmes. While ”discovering” a country, a region or a smaller geographical area – be it a city visit, active relaxation, recreation, participating in cultural, sports or other attractions – getting acquainted with local specialities is indispensable. And it is nothing else but the gastronomy of the given area. Our publication strives at collecting the local specialities of the DKMT Euroregion and hand it over to our dear guest as a euroregional guide. We have gathered a bunch of the local traditional types of drinks born during centuries on the territory of the DKMT Euroregion and we offer them to our guests. Kadarka, brandy (pálinka, rakija, cujka), beer: these are the beverages, made of different raw materials through different procedures, which have fulfilled an important role in the life of people living here. The history of alcoholic drinks prepared by fermentation, distillation, cooking and their combination is really equal in age with the history of mankind, because they were considered healthy compared to stale and infected waters. Those who consumed them did not catch the disease. This is why the wine has become a national beverage in the Mediterranean countries through thousands of years. But in places where the grapes could not properly ripen because of climatic factors, the art of beer brewing was raised to a masterful level, although the beer itself also started out from the eastern cultures to conquer the world.

The phylogenealogy of R-L21: four and a half millennia of expansion and redistribution Joe Flood* * Dr Flood is a mathematician, economist and data analyst. He was a Principal Research Scientist at CSIRO and has been a Fellow at a number of universities including Macquarie University, University of Canberra, Flinders University, University of Glasgow, University of Uppsala and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. He was a foundation Associate Director of the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute. He has been administrator of the Cornwall Y-DNA Geographic Project and several surname projects at FTDNA since 2007. He would like to give credit to the many ‘citizen scientists’ who made this paper possible by constructing the detailed R1b haplotree over the past few years, especially Alex Williamson. 1 ABSTRACT: Phylogenealogy is the study of lines of descent of groups of men using the procedures of genetic genealogy, which include genetics, surname studies, history and social analysis. This paper uses spatial and temporal variation in the subclade distribution of the dominant Irish/British haplogroup R1b-L21 to describe population changes in Britain and Ireland over a period of 4500 years from the early Bronze Age until the present. The main focus is on the initial spread of L21-bearing populations from south-west Britain as part of the Beaker Atlantic culture, and on a major redistribution of the haplogroup that took place in Ireland and Scotland from about 100 BC. The distributional evidence for a British origin for L21 around 2500 BC is compelling. Most likely the mutation originated in the large Beaker colony in south-west Britain, where many old lineages still survive.

  • Regele Ferdinand I Al Romniei (1914-1927)
MUZEUL NAŢIONAL Vol. XX 2008 "UN BUN ROMÂN" - REGELE FERDINAND I AL ROMÂNIEI A GOOD ROMANIAN - KING FERDINAND I OF ROMANIA Ştefania Ciubotaru Abstract The article is a new approach to the position King Ferdinand held in the Romanian society and among European royals. Respectfully spoken about in foreign newspapers, he was a dynamic and elegant presence in Romania. During his time politics, economy and culture had a progressive evolution and there were associated to the King’s vocation and intelligence skills of leadership. Key words: King Ferdinand, the Union, duty, daily life, social and economic progress Regele Ferdinand I al României s-a născut la 24 august 1865 la Sigmaringen, iar primele instrucţiuni le-a primit în familie de la profesorul Gröbels, urmând apoi gimnaziul din Düsseldorf.

  • Cultural Trauma – the Case of the Winner1
Cultural Trauma – The Case of the Winner1 ZOLTÁN BRETTER Politics in Central Europe (ISSN: 1801-3422) Vol. 16, No. 1S DOI: 10.2478/pce-2020-0004 Abstract: My study is an analysis of the emergence of the “Golden Dream” narrative in Romania, right after World War I. Along the way, I make some theoretical contributions to cultural trauma studies. ‘Winner’ and ‘loser’ are terms used to define fixed situations. Usually, only the loser (the victim, defeated) might suffer a trauma, while the occur‑ rence of trauma is denied for the winner (the perpetrator, victor). We shall dig a little deeper and wider, demonstrating that Romania, an overall winner of WWI, will face, right after victory, a ‘cultural shock’ which has to be repressed, as part of the “Golden Dream” narrative. Through a detailed, economic, social and political analysis, I’ll be trying to argue that a shattering trauma has engendered in Romanian society; yet an‑ other addition to a whole ‘traumatic history’. The ensuing orthodox ethno‑nationalism takes its root from this trauma. From time ‑to ‑time, we will take a comparative glance at the trauma of the loser, particularly when we will be discussing the omissions of an otherwise seamless narrative. Keywords: cultural trauma, Romania, Hungary, authoritarianism, interwar period Introduction “Where the disease is various, no particular definite remedy can meet the wants of all. Only the attraction of an abstract idea, or of an ideal state, can unite in common action, multitudes who seek a universal cure for many special evils and a common restorative applicable to many different conditions” (Acton 1862: 3).

  • SAMUEL HILL: His Life, His Friends, and His Accomplishments
SAMUEL HILL: His life, his friends, and his accomplishments “We have found the Garden of Eden. It is the garden spot of the world — the most beautiful country I have ever seen. I took Mary up on top of the mountain and showed her the kingdom of the earth. Just think of a place where you can raise apples, peaches, quinces, corn, potatoes, watermelons, nineteen varieties of grapes, plums, apricots, strawberries, walnuts, almonds and everything except oranges . I am going to incorporate a company called ‘The Promised Land Company’.” (October 18, 1907, from a letter sent by Samuel Hill to his brother, Dr. Richard Junius Hill.) The Promised Land Company, later known as Maryhill, Washington, eventually failed due to irrigation difficulties and a world war. Left in this wake was a huge Grecian-doric castle museum, dedicated to international art; a replica of England’s Stonehenge, dedicated to peace; and a colorful history of our people: a queen, a Folies Bergere denseuse, a sugar heiress, and an empire builder. The story of the castle begins in 1913 and continues today. Samuel Hill executed plans for the building of a castle on a rocky promontory high above the second largest river in the United States. Mr. Hill, a strange mixture of cosmopolite and farmer, intended to use his castle as a residence for entertaining illustrious friends and royalty. He was anxious to show them the beauties of the West and to return, in a good manner, the hospitality that had been extended to him. For his good friend, King Albert, Samuel had the Belgian crest engraved above the doors.

  • A Physical and Moral Portrait of Balkan Vlachs In
MUZEUL NAŢIONAL Vol. XX 2008 A PHYSICAL AND MORAL PORTRAIT OF BALKAN VLACHS IN HISTORICAL SOURCES (IXth-XIIth CENTURIES) DESPRE PORTRETUL FIZIC ŞI MORAL AL VLAHILOR BALCANICI ÎN SURSELE ISTORICE (SECOLELE IX-XII) Ginel Lazăr, Monica Lazăr Abstract Like any other people, the Balkan Vlachs (Romanians) came into being and defined themselves as an entity during a long and difficult historical process. Ethnoculturally and historically they share similarities but also differences which bring them closer, but also separate them from neighbouring peoples. Balkan Romanians’ physical and moral traits are differently perceived from one observer to another. For Byzantines, „Vlachs“ meant „barbarians“, namely those who didn’t speak, think or live like a Greek. Ever since Vlachs have been first mentioned in historical sources (approx. 850) until the Asanesti rebellion (1185), „the physical and moral portrait of Balkan Vlachs differs with each observer. Latin authors, especially Italians and Dalmatians, depicted them favourably, mainly highlighting their bellicose attributes and their pleasant appearance, sometimes associated to their Roman descent. On the contrary, they are often negatively perceived by their Balkan neighbours. This is not surprising at all: for Byzantines and Southern Slavics, endowed with their own states and cultures, the Vlach is „the other“, a foreigner refusing integration by asserting his own identity and even worse - often trying to establish his own state in an area they claimed“. Key words: „Romanus“, „the other“, transhumance, „kjelatori“, Haemus, Vlachs, Christians. Like any other people, the Balkan Vlachs (Romanians) came into being and defined themselves as an entity during a long and difficult historical process.
