  • SAMUEL HILL: His Life, His Friends, and His Accomplishments
SAMUEL HILL: His life, his friends, and his accomplishments “We have found the Garden of Eden. It is the garden spot of the world — the most beautiful country I have ever seen. I took Mary up on top of the mountain and showed her the kingdom of the earth. Just think of a place where you can raise apples, peaches, quinces, corn, potatoes, watermelons, nineteen varieties of grapes, plums, apricots, strawberries, walnuts, almonds and everything except oranges . I am going to incorporate a company called ‘The Promised Land Company’.” (October 18, 1907, from a letter sent by Samuel Hill to his brother, Dr. Richard Junius Hill.) The Promised Land Company, later known as Maryhill, Washington, eventually failed due to irrigation difficulties and a world war. Left in this wake was a huge Grecian-doric castle museum, dedicated to international art; a replica of England’s Stonehenge, dedicated to peace; and a colorful history of our people: a queen, a Folies Bergere denseuse, a sugar heiress, and an empire builder. The story of the castle begins in 1913 and continues today. Samuel Hill executed plans for the building of a castle on a rocky promontory high above the second largest river in the United States. Mr. Hill, a strange mixture of cosmopolite and farmer, intended to use his castle as a residence for entertaining illustrious friends and royalty. He was anxious to show them the beauties of the West and to return, in a good manner, the hospitality that had been extended to him. For his good friend, King Albert, Samuel had the Belgian crest engraved above the doors.

  • Rincess Marie of Romania – Her Letters from the Balkan War
JOURNAL of Humanities, Culture and Social Sciences, Vol. 2, No. 1, 2016 ISSN 2393 – 5960; ISSN – L 2393-5960, pp. 111-129 rincess Marie of Romania – her Letters from the Balkan War P Sorin Cristescu, Ph.D. Universitatea “Spiru Haret” Bucharest, Romania [email protected] Abstract The most dangerous enemy of the Romanian Army in the 1913 campaign was cholera. That gave Princess Marie the opportunity to prove to the whole country for the first time and to herself her extraordinary qualities of best organizer in the most dangerous place of the war the cholera camp at Zimnicea. Key words: Balkan wars, cholera camp, flying hospital. All of the biographers who have written about Queen Marie of Romania consider that the Crown Princess always wanted her people’s love. But it was during the participation of Romania at the so-called Second Balkan War 10th July-10th August 1913 when she discovered the fulfilment of earning in selfless service. It was the turning point in her life (Elsberry, 1972: 91; the same point of view is adopted in Pakula, 1984: 205–208). The future queen explained later the events at the end of the Romanian Army campaign in Bulgaria that put her into contact with the horrors of the war: “It resulted in no battles, but whilst on enemy's ground our troops encountered as deadly a foe as cannons—cholera. I was brought into sudden contact with this terrible scourge when I went to visit the troops and the Red Cross hospitals scattered along the Danube. I cannot help looking upon this as a turning point in my life.

KAPPEL has been approved for the Interdisciplinary Arts and the College of Fine Arts by William F. Condee Professor of Interdisciplinary Arts Charles A. McWeeny Dean, College of Fine Arts 4 ABSTRACT KAPPEL, CAROLINE J., Ph.D., November 2007, Interdisciplinary Arts Labyrinthine Depictions and Tempting Colors: The Synaesthetic Dances of Loïe Fuller as Symbolist Choreography (246 pp.) Director of Dissertation: William F. Condee This study explores Loïe Fuller’s use of synaesthesia to bring together various sensations so as to create a dreamlike effect in her choreography, while at the same time presenting a visual representation of symbolist ideals. On the music-hall stage she created popular ideas that had otherwise been restricted to small experimental theaters. In the visual arts, she became a constant public image of poster art as well as paintings, sculptures, and prints. She also dramatically presented the visualization of avant-garde color theories, while simultaneously representing symbolist ideals of the literary world. By tracing her explorations with the other arts in the context of various artistic, scientific, and movement theories, Fuller’s work can serve as a model for interdisciplinary studies in the fine arts.

  • Writing Queens of Romania, Elisabeth (Carmen Sylva) and Marie
“Carmen Sylva, when she discovered that I was writing, instead of laughing at me The Child of the Sun and being ironical about my modest attempts at literature, encouraged me from the very first in every way. She was getting old, her imagination was running dry, and Royal Fairy Tales and Essays by the Queens of Romania, she declared that mine had come just in time to replace hers, which was a generous thing to say. She declared that it was a happy and blessed discovery that I could Elisabeth (Carmen Sylva, 1843–1916) and Marie (1875–1938) hold a pen, and no end of kind and enthusiastic things. She spurred me on to write, and each time I had finished a story she immediately wanted to have it so as to Selected and edited, with an introduction and bibliography by translate it into German.” Silvia Irina Zimmermann Queen Marie of Romania about Carmen Sylva (Queen Elisabeth of Romania) Royal Fairy Tales and Essays by the Queens of Romania The history of the monarchy in Romania and of its four kings would be incomplete without the story of the queen consorts, who seem to have been even more fascinating personalities than the kings were. Especially the first two queen consorts, Elisabeth (Carmen Sylva) and Marie of Romania, became famous as writers during their lifetime. They both wrote in their mother tongues, Elisabeth in German and Marie in English, and published many of their books, not only in Romania, but also abroad, thus reaching a widespread readership, worldwide publicity, and literary recognition.

The lives of monarchs often are complicated by their political roles and greatly affected by tragedy, leading to compelling biographies. Russian history and the collapse of the Romanov house has interested me since middle school, likely due to my interest in the Slavic world due to my Czech and Polish heritage. As a political science major, international relations has been my main body of work, and I have long been interested in the collapse of the monarchy in favor of republican governance (or communism, in the case of the Soviet Union).

Excerpt from: Smith, Alexander. Die deutsche Frau: An Anthology of German Women's Writing. Provo: The Sophie Project, 2012. Damenmode von heute1 MARIA KÖNIGIN VON RUMÄNIEN aria of Romania, born Princess Marie of Edinburg on 29 October 1875, M was the Queen of Romania from 1914 to 1927, as the wife of Ferdinand I of Romania. Her father was the second eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of England, and her mother was the only surviving daughter of Alexander II. She was baptized in Windsor Castle on 15 December 1875, and spent much of her subsequent youth in Malta due to her father’s travels with the Navy. As a member of the royal family she was naturally considered as a suitable match for marriage into the royalty of Europe. Marriage was proposed to her first by King George V of the United Kingdom, but the mothers of both parties involved did not approve, so the marriage was not carried out. It was on 10 January 1893 that she married Prince Ferdinand of Romania, at the young age of 17, whilst Prince Ferdinand was 10 years older. This marriage was unfortunately a very unhappy one, as is shown through Marie’s correspondence with a long time American friend Loie Fuller. Historians agree that one of their children, Prince Mircea, was actually fathered by one of Marie’s lovers, Barbu Stirbey. She died on 18 July 1938. The following text is lexically difficult, containing many in depth descriptions of much of the clothing that was used and worn in the 19th century.

As most of the readers of the World History Bulletin are aware, SEWHA members have served as editors of the Bulletin since the Fall of 2001, when I took over the helm from Chip Desnoyers and Ross Doughty. In the interim eighteen years, the Bulletin has had four SEWHA-affiliated editors: myself, Jared Poley, Denis Gainty, and Ian Christopher Fletcher. During the ensuing years, the Bulletin editors have attempted to make each issue better than the previous one, and I hope to continue that objective. I must first offer congratulations and thanks to Ian for his herculean efforts in producing the special issue on The Long Global Sixties. Although the original intent was to have the topic spread out over two 2018 issues, I am confident most readers will agree with me that the single issue approach worked extremely well. This issue, the first of Volume XXXV, focuses on the 1919 Paris Peace Conference.
