It is one of the last works Tn the French Romantic style, though written well after the advent of Impres sionism. It is a lineal descendent of activity begun almost a century previous, yet was composed at a time when the future of this instrumental combination was uncertain. It may well have represented the end of an era, yet only 12 years separate it from the arrival of Hindemith's "Kleine Kannnermusik Nr. 2" and the beginning of "modern" quintet history as we know it. Soni Ventorum audiences have become familiar with the name of Anton Reicha through performances of a number of his wind quintets at these concerts, but what they may not realize is that many of these could well be U.S. premieres of works written over 150 years ago! Reicha, professor of composition and theory at the Paris Conservatoire (1818-1836) was, in effect, the "father" of the wind quintet, and his 24 works for this ensemble formed the basis of its classical repertoire. Though enthusiastically received in their day, these quintets gradually fell j out of print and, save for a few examples, have so remained. Soni Ventorum has reprinted the entire set from its microfilm collection, and, along with the Danzi Quintet of Holland, has become a leading exponent in their revival. The French conductor and composer Eugene Bozza is well known to wind players in this country through his series of etudes, solos, and ensemble works written in a generally bravura and virtuoso style. The Sonatine for flute and bassoon, an early example, is an engagingly two'-:dimensional work that casts many a sidelong glance, :;;t:;rreptitious and otherwise, the musical style of its dedicatee, Jacques Ibert. Had Leo~ Janatek died at the age of 50, he would most likely have been remembered as a relatively obscure choirmaster and organist, or as an ethnically-oriented minor composer with a good knowledge of folk music and a rather unusual approach to vocal writing based on melodies derived from speech-inflection patterns of his native Czech tongue. Such indeed was Jana~ek's lot until the 1916 Prague presentation of his opera "Jenufa" (1903) produced the equivalent of a national sensation • and accorded him the recognition granted Smetana and Dvo~~k. Further ~b________..__..• ___________ vocal and stage works spread his reputation abroad, notably "The Diary of One Who Vanished" (1921), the "Slavonic Mass" (1927), and his last opera "The House of the Dead" (1928). The sextet "Youth" for wind instruments (wind quintet plus bass clarinet) was written in the month of Jana~ek's 70th birt~ay. The composer delighted in its unusual sound combinations and in the realization that the winds were particularly suited to catching the unique nature of his ~ "speech-melodies". .

  • Ronald Roseman: a Biographical Description and Study of His Teaching Methodology
LAMPIDIS, ANNA, D.M.A. Ronald Roseman: A Biographical Description and Study of his Teaching Methodology. (2008) Directed by Dr. Mary Ashley Barret. 103 pp. Ronald Roseman was an internationally acclaimed oboe soloist, chamber musician, teacher, recording artist, and composer whose career spanned over 40 years. A renowned oboist, he performed in some of America’s most influential institutions and ensembles including the New York Woodwind Quintet, the New York Philharmonic, and the New York Bach Aria Group. His contributions to 20th Century oboe pedagogy through his own unique teaching methodology enabled him to contribute to the success of both his own personal students and many others in the field of oboe and woodwind performance. His body of compositions that include oboe as well as other instruments and voice serve to encapsulate his career as a noteworthy 20th Century composer. Roseman’s musicianship and unique teaching style continues to be admired and respected worldwide by oboists and musicians. The purpose of this study is to present a biographical overview and pedagogical techniques of oboist Ronald Roseman. This study will be divided into sections about his early life, teaching career, performance career and his pedagogical influence upon his students. Exercises and techniques developed by Roseman for the enhancement of oboe pedagogy will also be included. Interviews have been conducted with his wife and three former well-known students in order to better serve the focus of this study. The author also contributed pedagogical techniques compiled during a two-year period of study with Roseman. Appendices include a discography of recorded materials, the New York Woodwind Quintet works list, Roseman’s published article on Baroque Ornamentation, a list of his compositions with premiere dates and performers, and interview questions.

  • Roles for the Horn in Danzi's Trio in F Major, Op. 23
128 HISTORIC BRASS SOCIETY JOURNAL ROLES FOR THE HORN IN DANZI’S TRIO IN F MAJOR, OP. 23 Kristen S. Hansen Horn players traditionally have had few opportunities to perform chamber music with strings. With a few exceptions, such as the trio of Brahms and the horn quintet of Mozart, the combination of horn and violin seems to be one that composers have approached with caution. Franz Danzi’s Trio, Op. 23, for horn, violin, and bassoon is an overlooked but effective work that uses the capabilities of the three instruments to good advantage. In this article I will examine the Trio in light of the norms for horn writing in the Classical era and identify the changes in the role of the horn after the trio was re-orchestrated as a wind quintet. Finally, I will speculate on the circumstances under which Danzi composed this piece. Franz Danzi (1763-1826) was the son of a Mannheim court musician. A cellist like his father, Danzi played first at the musically rich electoral court in Mannheim, then at the Munich establishment under Carl Theodor. Eventually he held the post of deputy Kapell- meister in Munich, and he would spend time later in similar engagements at Stuttgart and Karlsruhe. In the course of his duties at Munich, Danzi composed in a variety of genres. Chamber music was a significant part of his output, with works ranging from string quartet and wind quintet to combinations that may best be described as experimental.1 Some time between 1800 and 1805, Danzi composed a six-movement work for horn, violin, and bassoon, the Trio in F major, Op.
