SCOPE NOTE The papers of Rayford Whittingham Logan (1897-1982), educator, administrator, author and civil rights activist, document his personal life, career as an educator at Howard University, and his role as a prolific author on a number of topics. These papers date from circa 1917, when Dr. Logan was enlisted in the U.S. Army, through the 1980's. They were acquired by Moorland-Spingarn from Dr. Logan's executor, Dr. Michael Winston, in 1983. There are approximately 43.5 linear feet or 36.2 cubic feet of materials. Correspondence, speeches, writings by Dr. Logan and photographs are featured in these papers. Some teaching materials from his tenure at Howard University are also included, as well as materials from organizations with which Dr. Logan was associated such as Alpha Phi Alpha, the Peace Corps and UNESCO. Among his writings are his unpublished autobiography and manuscripts of other writings covering topics such as Africa, the Negro in America, civil rights, Howard University, and international human rights.
