MD JP The first family involved in the property seem to have been the Eddowes family, of Burleigh Fields House, a large property some half a mile away. 1 They had links to the substantial Eddowes family who owned Loughborough Parks. 2 Figure 2: Burleigh Fields House pictured in the 1890s. (Demolished in the 1960s) This well to do household is shown in the 1891 census as being made up of three unmarried and well-to-do siblings supported by a butler, a cook, a housemaid and a groom. The siblings were the children of John Henry Eddowes MD Senior and his wife Harriet – and our owner is the 67 year old John Henry Eddowes Junior. 1891 Census, Burleigh Fields, Ashby Road, John Henry Eddowes, Head, Unmarried, 67, MD Physician and GP born Loughborough Frances E. Eddowes, Sister, Unmarried, 55, living on own means, born Loughborough. Helen Eddowes, Sister, Unmarried, 52, living on own means, born Loughborough. Mary Shaw, Servant, Unmarried, 44, Domestic Servant Cook, born Lichfield. Mary Anne Stubbs, Servant, Unmarried, 35, Housemaid, born Northampton, Joseph Slade, Servant, Unmarried, 25, Butler, born Bedfordshire, Fred Glossop, Servant, Unmarried, 20, Groom, birthplace unknown. The Eddowes family seems to have been quite well-connected and had long medical service in Loughborough. Our John Henry Eddowes Junior (bn 1823) seems also to have been involved in property speculation, for on 1884 3rd December, the Trustees of the ancient Loughborough John Storer Charity 3 sold to John Henry Eddowes MD a piece of land with a 160 foot frontage in 1 Photograph from “In Loughborough”, a website set up by Leicestershire County Council. 2 A “quick” internet search for this family brings up from various combined sources this structure: Henry Eddowes and Mary – Died 1826 John Henry Eddowes Senior , bn Loughborough 1796 of Henry and Mary, a surgeon of Loughborough – his wife Harriet Jackson md Oadby 1823 Thomas Storer Eddowes, bn 1826 Loughborough, Solicitor of Sutton Coldfield. Eddowes bn 1841 Loughborough 3 “A brief history In 1713, John Storer, thought to have been a small-holder from Walton-on-the-Wolds, founded a charity conveying cottages and land in Loughborough to eleven trustees. The income was used to buy wheat to make bread, which was distributed to poor people living in the town, and coats for children in need aged between five and twelve years. In 1891, the Charity Commissioners made a scheme for the charity; the general basis was that half the income should go to the relief of poverty and the other half, towards the advancement of education for children resident in the Parish. In 1899 the distribution Page 6 Kevin J. Norman – [email protected] – last edited October 8, 2017 Draft notes by Kevin J. Norman on the history of 125 Ashby Road, Loughborough Ashby Road, having a total area of c. 3,420 square yards at the price of £704. That the plot must have been in development by then is shown by the stipulation in the deed that this included half of a private road at the rear, and a covenant promising not to erect any building of less than £20 rateable value nearer than 20 feet to Ashby Road. The fact that John Henry Eddowes (bn 1823) had a brother Thomas Storer Eddowes (bn 1826) may provide a link into the Storer Charity from which he bought the property. If it does, we shall see that it would not be the first time that “family” connections were to come into play! The 1883 Ordnance map of the area shows the future location of the 5 house plot and the home of the Eddowes family at Burleigh Fields House. of bread and clothing ceased. The children, because of the stigma associated of being in receipt of charity, refused to wear the coats. Originally the income cannot of been great; in 1785 it was £30 a year, but with the Charity Commissioners it was now, in 1960, £1,850. From time to time, the Trustees sold off parts of the land in Loughborough. In 1891, 14 lots of Ashby Road, where Storer Road runs, and in 1960 the remaining Ashby Road land was sold to Leicestershire County Council for educational purposes”.
