Directions (from Castle Bromwich to start of walk) • Take the Water Orton Road and Marsh Lane to the A446 Lichfield Road where you turn left towards Lichfield. • At the first roundabout take the second exit staying on the A446. • At the next roundabout (Dunton Island) take 3rd exit – M42 North • Stay on M42 which becomes A42 for about 18 miles. • Use the left lane to take the A511/A512 slip road (signed to Ashby/Coalville/Leicester/Loughborough) • At the roundabout take the 4th exit A512 signed to Loughborough, Coleorton, Shepsted) • After 2.7 miles at the next roundabout take the 2nd exit onto A512, Loughborough Rd • Stay on the A512 for about 1.5 miles then as the road bends left you will see the Bull’s Head on the right. Please park at the far end of the car park. Walk description Soon after setting off we will see remnants of The Charnwood Forest Railway and The Charnwood Forest Canal before spending a short time in exploration of the ruins of Grace Dieu Priory, an Augustinian religious house for nuns – reputedly one of the top places in Leicestershire for paranormal experiences. We then head south through mature woodland following the pretty Grace Dieu stream towards the neighbouring village of Whitwick where we will pause for lunch beside a fishing lake. We return to Thringstone along field paths and a disused railway track. There are only 2 stiles. If you are travelling directly to the start of a walk and not meeting at Castle Bromwich, please let the walk leader know. WALK GRADING ADVICE Leisurely – Walks for reasonably fit people with at least a little country walking experience. Walking boots and warm waterproof clothing recommended. Moderate – Walks for people with country walking experience. May include some steep paths and be at a brisk pace. Walking boots and warm, waterproof clothing are essential. Easy – Gentle walks, generally level. Suitable for anyone who does not have a mobility problem or is seriously unfit. .
