Tom Petherick Photography by Will Heap Biodynamics in Practice

Life on a a Community Owned Farm

Impressions of Tablehurst and Plaw Hatch, Sussex, England

‘Biodynamics seeks the holistic and interrelated health of the diverse creatures and beings composing a farm, including human beings and the wider, surrounding community. It is not just a “method” but a whole approach to life—one which could have far-reaching benefits for the health of the soil, plants, animals and human beings across the globe...’

Born from a series of eight lectures delivered by scientist and philosopher Rudolf Steiner in 1924, the movement for today encompasses many hundreds of farms and millions of consumers worldwide. Much has been written about biodynamics’ unique perspectives on farming, nutrition, the world of nature and the wider cosmos. But how does it work in practice? What is it like to run a farm based on its principles?

England’s Tablehurst and Plaw Hatch farms form a co-operative venture in which the local community plays a crucial role. As successful, commercial enterprises with high outputs, they have a growing reputation for the excellence of their produce. Through interviews, commentary and dozens of full colour photos, Biodynamics in Practice gives a guided tour of the farms from the viewpoint of a sympathetic visitor. It illustrates how biodynamic farms work, how they differ from conventional and organic farms, and why that difference is important. In short and accessible vignettes, the book looks at many aspects of farm life, including animal rearing and welfare—cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry—crop growth, dairy and cheesemaking, and even bee-keeping and caring for people with special needs. It also gives an introduction to biodynamics itself and brief histories of both farms.

Farms are sometimes regarded simply as food-producing factories, but this book shows that they can be much more, offering spiritually-sustaining focal points of community cohesion and participation.

TOM PETHERICK has worked variously as a jockey, a horticulturalist and an author. He has written two books about the Lost Gardens of Heligan and a further book on organic smallholding, and has presented a series of DVDs on horticulture. In 2009 Tom joined the biodynamic and organic certification body Demeter as a farm inspector. He lives with his family in Dartington, Devon, on a small farm.

Hartmut Warm Signature of the Celestial Spheres

Discovering Order in the Solar System

‘A milestone in modern research on the harmony of the spheres.’ – Novalis magazine

Is the solar system ordered, or is it simply the result of random and chaotic accidents? This book takes us on a powerful and compelling journey of discovery, revealing the celestial spheres’ astonishingly complex patterns. The movements of the planets are found to correspond accurately with simple geometric figures and musical intervals, pointing to an exciting new perspective on the ancient idea of a ‘harmony of the spheres’.

Hartmut Warm’s detailed presentation incorporates the distances, velocities and periods of conjunction of the planets, as well as the rotations of the Sun, Moon and Venus. Numerous graphics – including colour plates – illustrate the extraordinary beauty of the geometrical forms that result when the movements of several planets are viewed in relation to one another. In addition, the author describes and analyses the concepts of the ‘music of the spheres’, with special consideration given to Johannes Kepler’s revolutionary ideas. Current scientific beliefs about the origin of the universe and the solar system are explained, enabling the reader to understand fully how Warm’s remarkable research supplements contemporary materialistic views of the cosmos. An appendix includes his mathematical and astronomical methods of calculation as well as detailed discussion of their accuracy and validity based on modern astronomical algorithms.

HARTMUT WARM, born 1956, is a civil engineer and independent researcher in astronomy, geometry, the history of harmonics and musical aesthetics. He has taught, lectured and published widely on these and other subjects, and in particular on his discoveries relating to the solar system and its inherent order. He lives in Hamburg, Germany.

Jochen Schwuchow John Wilkes Iain Trousdell Energizing Water

Flowform Technology and the Power of Nature

The poor quality of water, as well as its restricted supply and availability, is one of the biggest challenges of our time, with presently two-fifth’s of the world’s population unable to find adequate fresh water for essential usage.

Over 40 years’ research has been carried out on the positive effects that rhythms and specific water flow has on water’s capacity to support life. Energizing Water presents this cutting-edge research to the general and professional reader at a time when interest in finding solutions to water’s huge worldwide problems is growing rapidly.

Three aspects determine water quality: its chemical constituents (including its oxygen levels); its organic aspects (with the danger of contamination by effluent, pathogens and algae); and its ‘energetic’ nature. The latter facet has been recognized from time immemorial by traditional societies, who have developed their own sciences in relation to water quality, using terms such as prana and chi for energy. Now, through the introduction of quantum physics into the life sciences, modern science is beginning to accept this concept, measuring energy as light emission.

Research into energetic water quality—and particularly into the creation of moulded surfaces that support biological purification of the chemical and organic elements, as well as enlivening the energetic attributes—goes back to George Adams’ and John Wilkes’ pioneering work in the 1960s. The invention of Flowform technology in 1970 carried this research further, providing the world with one of the first modern-day, biomimicry eco-technologies. This creative technology applies nature’s best methods to produce extraordinary results, and this book outlines the background story on research and application of the Flowform method today. JOHN WILKES originated the Flowform Method in 1970 following periods of work with George Adams and . After further research, project work led to installa- tions in many countries. In 2002 an Institute was built at Emerson College providing more adequate space for research into the qualitative effects of rhythmic movement on water.

JOCHEN SCHWUCHOW is a freelance research and teaching consultant at Emerson College in England.

IAIN TROUSDELL is director of the Healing Water Institute in NZ.

Rudolf Steiner The Mysteries of the Holy Grail

From Arthur and Parzival to Modern Initiation

From the ancient British tales of King Arthur and his knights through the medieval Central European sagas of Parzival, right up to modern-day blockbuster novels and films, the Grail has long maintained its enigmatic presence in western culture. It is said to be many things: a lost and priceless treasure, the chalice cup of the Last Supper, the cup that caught Jesus Christ’s blood from the cross on Golgotha, or even a secret royal bloodline...

Basing his presentations on far-reaching spiritual research, Rudolf Steiner gave profoundly esoteric, multifaceted insights into the mysteries of the Holy Grail. Collected together for the first time in a single volume, together with commentary and notes, these passages offer vivid tableaux with a multiplicity of meanings: a story that speaks to the human soul with a depth and complexity that intellectual interpretations alone cannot begin to fathom.

Just as Parzival had to encounter and engage with veils of illusion and valleys of shadow and doubt, Rudolf Steiner presents us with a similarly challenging path. This book is more than a treasure of thought and insight: it invites us to embark on a personal quest to develop the abilities and vision required for grasping the elusive Grail itself. As editor Matthew Barton writes: ‘The vessel of the Grail gradually descends towards us and comes into focus as we raise ourselves individually to it by piercing through the illusions of materialism, acknowledging that we ourselves can ultimately become true vessels for the spirit.’

Chapters: I The Gospel of John and the Virgin Sophia II From the Spirit in Nature to the Spirit in Us: The New Initiation III The Quest and the Question: Piercing through Materialism IV New Spiritual Community: The Grail as Transformed Larynx V The War-Torn Soul and the Quest for Integration VI The Grail in the Human Organism: Spirit Infusing Matter VII Initiation Today: The Trials and the Quest

Rudolf Steiner Six Steps in Self-Development

The ‘Supplementary Exercises’

The so-called ‘supplementary exercises’—to be carried out alongside the ‘review exercises’ and meditation—are integral to the path of personal development presented by Rudolf Steiner. Together they form a means of experiencing the spiritual realm in full consciousness. Meditation enlivens thinking, the review exercises cultivate the will, whilst the supplementary exercises educate and balance feeling. Conscientiously practised, this path of self-knowledge and development has the effect of opening a source of inner strength and psychological health that soon make themselves felt in daily life.

In six stages these exercises enable the practise of qualities that can be summarized as: control of thoughts, initiative of will, equanimity, positivity, open-mindedness and equilibrium of soul. When carried out regularly, they balance possible harmful effects of meditative practice and bring inner certainty and security to the soul. They are also of inestimable value in their own right due to their beneficial and wholesome effect on daily life.

In this invaluable small book, the editor has drawn together virtually all Rudolf Steiner’s statements on the supplementary exercises, supporting them with commentary and notes. With a chapter devoted to each exercise, they are described in detail and from different perspectives.

Rudolf Steiner Strengthening the Will

The ‘Review Exercises’

The review exercises bring the experiences of our daily lives to full awareness. By directing our attentive gaze to what has happened – whether in a single day or in whole phases of life – we kindle light in our will. Undertaking such a review backwards, in reverse sequence, or from an ‘external perspective’, requires a huge inner effort as we establish distance between ourselves and our daily experiences.

In this essential handbook the editor has drawn together virtually all Rudolf Steiner’s statements on the review exercises, supporting them with commentary and notes. Described from different perspectives and approaches, there are a surprising range of suggestions for carrying them out. Individual chapters focus on reviewing the day (transforming the power of memory); reviewing events in your life (awakening the higher self); reviewing the other’s perspective (awakening social impulses); exercises in thinking backwards (illuminating the will); and more.

Hans Hasler The

A guided tour through the building, its surroundings and its history

‘I first saw the Goetheanum as a fifteen-year-old through binoculars. I was fascinated and wanted to know more about this incredible building. What am I seeing? Why these forms? What happens in this building?’ —Hans Hasler

The Goetheanum in Dornach, Switzerland, was conceived as a visible expression of Rudolf Steiner’s spiritual philosophy—a living experience of in the form of art. Whilst Steiner con- veyed his ideas and concepts in many books and lectures, the Goetheanum—with its pioneering concrete forms built in the 1920s—is a manifestation of spirituality in architecture, painting and sculpture.

This essential handbook, packed with colour photos and illustrations, gives a broad background to Rudolf Steiner’s architectural masterpiece and the work that goes on within it. Hasler explains how the present Goetheanum was built, and describes its recently remodelled great hall and stage, with its painted ceiling and sculpted walls. He details the building’s context and landscape design, the other significant structures in its vicinity, and gives a description of the first, wooden, Goetheanum and its destruction by fire.

Today the Goetheanum’s remarkable external contours house theatres and studios, laboratories, offices and libraries. Apart from its major stages for drama and eurythmy, it serves as the head- quarters of the and the School of Spiritual Science, with the latter’s sections for medicine, agriculture, education, the arts, science, and so on. The Goetheanum is also home to numerous conferences, meetings and events. This book provides a marvellous visual and textual guide to one of the most original buildings of our time.

HANS HASLER, born in Switzerland in 1942, studied Slavonic languages, history and educa- tion, before becoming a school teacher. He was responsible for social therapy and educa- tion for special needs in the Medical Section, and later managed the Goetheanum Building Administration, where he oversaw redesign of the main auditorium. The present book is based on his profound knowledge of the building and its surroundings, as well as his many encounters through leading guided tours over the years.

Judith von Halle John Wilkes The Representative of Humanity

Between Lucifer and Ahriman

The Wooden Model at the Goetheanum

In conceiving his architectural masterpiece—the Goetheanum in Dornach, Switzerland—Rudolf Steiner designed a large wooden model, featuring three main figures, to be placed in a central position inside the building. Known as ‘the Representative of Humanity’, this sculpture shows a central, free-standing Christ holding a balance between the beings of Lucifer and Ahriman, who represent polar tendencies of expansion and contraction. On New Year’s Eve 1922 the Goetheanum was destroyed by fire, but the model—still in a process of creation and therefore housed in an external studio—miraculously escaped the flames. It remains intact to this day in the second Goetheanum, where it can be viewed by the public.

With numerous full colour photos and illustrations, The Representative of Humanity offers a vivid introduction to this monumental, world-historic artwork. We follow the evolution of the statue through the photographic documentation of many models created in its development: from six smaller versions to a full-size plasticine construction. This latter model—also still on display—offers an impressive insight into the artists’ detailed intentions, having been repeatedly revised by Rudolf Steiner. It demonstrates the continual spiritual movement evident in the whole series of small models, and the metamorphic processes which developed over an eight-year period.

The authors offer indications regarding the realm and content out of which the work arose, the environment in which it is situated, and the artists who created it: Rudolf Steiner and the trained sculptress . They also examine the intentions behind a work of art that addresses the destiny of the whole of mankind.

JOHN WILKES began restoration work on Steiner’s and Maryon’s sculptural and architec- tural legacy in 1965. A large number of wax and plasticine models had been deteriorating over the decades. Included was the nine-metre high, preparatory plasticine model required for building the wooden sculpture in 1917.

JUDITH VON HALLE attended school in Germany and the USA and subsequently studied architec- ture. She encountered anthroposophy in 1997, at which time she was running her own architectural practice. She now works principally as a lecturer and author, having some 12 books in print.

Rudolf Steiner, read by Peter Bridgmont Knowledge of the Higher Worlds

How is it Achieved? Audio Book (CD box set), complete and unabridged

Rudolf Steiner’s fundamental handbook for spiritual and personal develop- ment has grown more modern as time has passed, although his methods remain clearly distinguishable from the many others now in circulation. Steiner’s path of spiritual growth is based on the clarity of thought normally associated with scientific research. Rather than denying clear thinking, his aim is to extend it beyond its present limitations. Steiner recognizes—as all genuine disciplines always have—that the path to spiritual experience is an arduous and dangerous one, calling for self-control in thought, word and deed. Human beings comprise a unity, and we cannot develop knowledge without a corresponding development in feeling and will.

Knowledge of the Higher Worlds begins with the conditions required for personal development, and guides us through the stages of initiation, its practical aspects and its effects.

Steve Briault The Mystery of Meeting Relationships as a Path of Discovery

‘Our relationships – with our family, colleagues, friends, lovers, partners – are decisive factors in our lives. More than outer success, wealth or fame, they make the difference between joy and sorrow, development and stagnation, fulfilment and frustration. If we can navigate these thresholds with our eyes open, relationships can become a path of initiation, taking us beyond our self-centred isolation into new and inspiring worlds of experience.’

What really happens in relationships? Why do they affect us so deeply? Why do we long for a sense of community yet so aggressively assert our individualism? What are the risks and benefits of genuine human encounter? Drawing on far-reaching perspectives from psychology, philosophy, management and economics, The Mystery of Meeting explores these questions from a unique viewpoint, offering insight and guidance for developing healthy relationships. The author elaborates powerful ways of working with the dynamics of relationships within personal, community and business contexts. Encountering another person, he says, is a ‘threshold-experience’. Each individual is an unknown world, and through meeting we are confronted with developmental challenges as well as opportunities for profound personal development.

This stimulating book presents groundbreaking ideas for managers, professionals, educators, com- municators, and anyone who wishes to improve everyday relationships.

Rudolf Steiner Inner Experiences of Evolution

In this most remarkable and in many ways unique course of lectures, Rudolf Steiner describes the inner experience of the states of consciousness known as the Saturn, Sun, Moon and Earth stages of evolution.

Lecture by lecture, Steiner details the experiences of these states available to one who practises the spiritual-scientific path of meditation. By this means, these stages and states gain an unexpected and existential reality: suddenly, we recognize what Steiner is communicating. Most remarkable of all, perhaps, is the description of the Earth state with its experience of death, which Christ knew on the Cross at Golgotha, transforming earthly and human evolution.

Inner Experiences of Evolution is a translation from German of Die Evolution vom Gesichtspunkte des Wahrhaftigen (GA 132). These lectures were previously included as part of The Spiritual Hierarchies & the Physical World: Reality and Illusion (1996). A previous translation also appeared as Evolution in the Aspect of Realities (Garber).

Rudolf Steiner What Is Necessary in These Urgent Times

In early 1920, political, economic, social and spiritual chaos was everywhere. The old world had fallen apart and would need to be rebuilt. Anthroposophy, too, had to be remade. Recognizing this, Rudolf Steiner worked tirelessly for the ‘threefold social order’, establishing the first Waldorf school, helping to create businesses, and addressing the talented, educated and idealistic young people who were beginning to turn toward anthroposophy for answers.

In these lectures, Steiner speaks in the new, direct ‘Michaelic’ way, seeking the path to a new way of working. He stresses that the task of spiritual science is to awaken us to reality and to a true understanding of life that sees through illusions and understands the ever-present potential of evil. Speaking both esoterically and exoterically, he returns repeatedly to the importance of community, of meeting one another face-to-face, heart-to-heart, as individuals. Thus, rather than seeking power and control, we are called to cultivate trust and receptivity.

What Is Necessary in These Urgent Times is a translation from German of Geisitige und soziale Wandlungen in der Menschheitsentwikelung (GA 196).

Rudolf Steiner Introducing Anthroposophical Medicine

Taking account of modern medical knowledge and practice, and deeply versed in alchemical, Paracelsian, and naturopathic approaches, as well as homeopathy, aroma therapy, and other ‘alternative’ therapies, Steiner demonstrates, on the basis of his own researches, how a truly integrated whole-person medicine is possible—one that understands the human as a being of body, soul, and spirit; a microcosm in the macrocosm, a mirror of the earth and of the heavens.

Steiner’s enthusiasm and familiarity with his subject are in evidence everywhere in this volume. The wealth of insights and the range of topics are staggering—from the meaning of sickness, polarities in the human organism, and the relation of therapy and pathology, to the nature of plant, mineral and animal in relation to the human being. Specific organs (heart, lungs, bladder, kidney, liver, and nervous system) and specific diseases (including cancer, tuberculosis, diabetes and meningitis) are brought into extraordinary new relationships and interconnections. The whole question of diagnosis, health and treatment is repeatedly viewed from various points of view.

Rudolf Steiner The Healing Process Spirit, Nature & Our Bodies

In all his lectures to doctors and in his explanations of , Steiner emphasized that his medical concepts are not intended to replace conventional Western medicine, but to extend it; diagnosis and healing methods are expanded to include our soul and spirit.

In these broadly ranging talks, Steiner introduces fundamental principles of anthroposophically-extended medicine. Some of the most remarkable insights that anthroposophy brings to medicine are contained in this volume. For example, Steiner points out that the heart is not a pump and that its motion is a consequence, not the cause, of rhythmic movements in human beings.

Topics include: health problems, such as hay fever, migraine, sclerosis, cancer, tuberculosis, typhoid, and childhood diseases; the polarity between nerve and liver cells; the functions of the spleen and the gallbladder; the three basic processes of sensory-nervous system, rhythmic system, and metabolic-limb system; regenerative and degenerative processes; the true nature of the nervous system; and many suggestions for the use of minerals, plants, and artistic therapies in healing.

Rudolf Steiner First Steps in Christian Religious Renewal Preparing the Ground for

The lectures and discussions presented here make up the first of the so-called five Priest Courses. They record the first steps of the remarkable journey taken in 1921 by a small group of dedicated souls who, out of their own inner needs and guided by Rudolf Steiner, sought a path to Christian religious renewal.

Addressing the group with warm intimacy, Steiner frames their task not primarily in theological terms, but as a need for a renewing of ‘the religious’, or ‘the working of the religious element as such’. For this, the sermon (or how we speak) is central, for today we must use language in new ways. We cannot reopen the spiritual worlds by starting from ‘old conditions’. Traditional religious life has become too corrupted, while modern culture has radically changed and become divorced from tradition.

This volume is a translation from German of Vorträge und Kurse über christlich-religiöses Wirken, Bd.1, Anthroposophische Grundlagen für ein erneuertes christlich-religiöses Wirken (GA 342).

Rudolf Steiner From the History and Contents of the First Section of the Esoteric School 1904–1914 Letters, Documents and Lectures

This volume is an important text for anyone interested in the development of Rudolf Steiner’s teaching and for those wishing to explore the advice and admonitions Steiner provided for his early esoteric students. This collection of letters, circulars and lectures offers a glimpse of the birth of the anthroposophic movement from the German section of the Theosophical Society of the late nineteenth century. One gains a clear picture as to why Steiner could no longer work within the theosophic framework, as well as the events that led to the split between the Theosophical Society under the leadership of Annie Besant and the Esoteric School under Steiner’s guidance and leadership.

Primarily in the form of letters, here are the specific exercises and advice that Steiner gave to pupils who wished to further their spiritual capacities. Also included are his early lectures and teachings concerning the ‘Masters’ and their relationship to human evolution.

Peter Selg Rudolf Steiner as a Spiritual Teacher From recollections of those who knew him

For , if anthroposophy is to be a living reality, we must learn to know and love Rudolf Steiner as he appeared to those who knew and loved him: namely, as a spiritual teacher. To help us do so, he has gathered recol- lections of those of who knew Steiner personally—historical witnesses to the ‘living phenomenon’ of the ‘figure of the teacher’. It is his hope that these firsthand accounts will help readers see and experience the amazing, ever- mysterious person that Rudolf Steiner was—a dynamic, energetic ‘dual citizen’ of both the spiritual and the physical worlds.

Steiner moved constantly between these two realities, while his whole life was dedicated in service to the spiritual evolution of humanity. Nonetheless, he was also deeply sociable and a true friend, convivial, cheerful, humorous, and able to enjoy—and tell—a good joke. He was also austere and painfully serious.

For anyone who has wondered what Rudolf Steiner was like, this book will open many windows.

Peter Selg Rudolf Steiner and the Fifth Gospel Insights into a New Understanding of the Christ Mystery

Rudolf Steiner received the Fifth Gospel—unrecorded events from the so-called lost years of the life of Jesus, obtained by grace and by spiritual research into the akashic record—as a ‘sacred obligation’ to which he experienced a deep sense of responsibility. However, he never finished the project of unveiling it. Had he done so, not only anthroposophy but also Christianity would have received an enormous spiritual gift: a concrete, soul- filled description of the Mystery of Golgotha. His deeply moving and often startling lectures in 1913 are thus fragmentary, giving the near-tragic impres- sion that, because those who heard or read them did not take them up with sufficient seriousness and inner dedication, humanity has suffered an inestimable loss.

In this dramatic book, Selg tells the story of those lectures. He recounts their background and many of the most important episodes. He illumines and gives context to the excerpts with a profound yet accessible commentary. Most important, he offers insights into their importance to both Steiner and the hearts of those who heard and understood—even those who felt inadequate to the task.

Peter Selg Unbornness Human Pre-existence and the Journey toward Birth

As anyone who has had a child knows, newborns enter the earthly world as beings different from their parents. They arrive with their own individuality, being and history. From the beginning, they manifest an essential dignity and a unique ‘I’, which they brought with them from the spiritual world.

It was one of Rudolf Steiner’s great gifts that he returned the concept of unbornness to human consciousness and language. In this brief, stunning and moving, almost poetic, work Peter Selg gathers the key elements and images needed to begin an understanding of—and wonder at—the vast scope of our unbornness. Drawing on and expanding Steiner’s work, as well as Raphael’s Sistine Madonna and the poems of Nelly Sachs and Rainer Maria Rilke, Selg unveils this deepest mystery of human existence. After reading it, one will never look at a child or another human being in the same way again.

Peter Selg The Path of the Soul after Death The Community of the Living and the Dead as Witnessed by Rudolf Steiner in his Eulogies and Farewell Addresses

Rudolf Steiner saw relationships with the dead as the ‘religious attitude of the future’, in the highest sense. Becoming comfortable with thinking and speaking of the dead as concretely as we speak of the living will profoundly affect human activity. To Steiner, the ‘enlivening’ and even the ‘sanctification’ of earthly existence are not merely connected directly with our relationship to death and to the deceased; in fact, that relationship deepens these qualities and makes them possible.

Steiner spoke frequently about death and the human soul’s continued existence, as well as about the importance of establishing a new kind of community that unites spiritually active human souls that endure beyond death. Selg shows how Rudolf Steiner commemo- rated the dead, the words he chose to use, and his descriptions—sometimes in great detail—of the inner processes involved. The Path of the Soul after Death is an important addition to the body of anthroposophic literature on our relationship on Earth to those who have died. Peter Selg does a great service in gathering and amplifying much of what Steiner had to say on the subject. JAN 2011 Trans. M. Saar; SB; 288pp; 21.5 x 14 cm; 978 0 88010 724 2; pb; £14.95

Erik Berrevoets Wisdom of the Bees Principles for Biodynamic Beekeeping

‘The more you investigate these creatures and the manner in which they live, the more you will come to the conclusion that there is a great intelligence in how they work and what they accomplish.’— Rudolf Steiner

While the benefits of Steiner’s research into agriculture and education are increasingly recognized, his research into the nature of bees has had limited impact on beekeeping practices and on our general understanding of nature. Wisdom of the Bees examines Steiner’s insights and research into the nature of bees and their implications for the future of beekeeping.

Today, more than eighty years after Rudolf Steiner presented his lectures on bees, we are confronted with a serious decline of honeybees around the world. This fact alone justifies Wisdom of the Bees, a practical and timely introduction to biodynamic beekeeping. Erik Berrevoets revisits those seminal lectures and re-examines Steiner’s observations and insights in the context of today’s dire situation and provides practical advice for modern beekeeping practices. His book is an accessible and es- sential introduction to the urgent subject of holistic beekeeping practices.

John Bloom Genius of Money Essays and Interviews Reimagining the Financial World

Coming to terms with money is one of the great transformational challenges of our time. This collection of essays and interviews is an invitation and inquiry addressing that challenge on a systemic and personal level. The book presents an engaging worldview that emerges from the intersection of money and spirit. Practical, spiritual and unwavering, it investigates the financial world as it plays out in daily life through our transactions.

The first section, ‘The Poetics of Money’, is framed on historical and contemporary works of art that reveal some of the cultural history of money. In the second section, ‘The Topography of Transactions’, the author explores the inner landscape of financial transactions. Finally, the third section, ‘A Wealth of Transformation’, consists of interviews with individuals who have transformed themselves as they transformed the world through social entrepreneurship, philanthropy, philosophical inquiry into money, investing and spiritual practice. These exemplars represent the many who have recognized that the financial world needs to change if we are to have peace in the world.

Marsha Post The Waldorf Book of Breads Edited and introduced by Winslow Eliot Illustrated by Jo Valens

Like the Waldorf Kindergarten Snack Book and Waldorf School Book of Soups, this newest book in the series provides yet another rich resource for spending time in the kitchen with young children—this time baking bread. What child doesn’t like to feel and knead bread dough, watch it rise, and then taste it fresh from the oven? Not only is such hands-on sensory experience fun for everyone, it is also invaluable to young children as they continue to incarnate into our world.

These recipes, handed down by grandmothers, mothers, aunts and friends, are easy to follow and encourage the baker, young and old alike, to use the best possible ingredients, making bread once again the healthy ‘staff of life’ it once was. The Waldorf Book of Breads includes tasty breads for the daily table and specialty breads for seasons and special occasions. And, like her other books, this one too is spiral-bound, so it lies flat to make life in the kitchen a little easier.

Artist Jo Valens once again provides delightful illustrations to accompany the many recipes for delicious breads.

Ernst Katz Core Anthroposophy Teaching Essays of Ernst Katz

Ernst Katz was one of the foremost teachers of anthroposophy in Amer- ica during the second half of the twentieth century. He was professor of physics at the University of Michigan and, quite likely, the only professor in the country who taught courses in both natural science and ‘spiritual’ science at the university level. In the early 1960s, Dr Katz began writing his ‘teaching essays’, his response to the many questions through the years intended to help students comprehend the profound wisdom contained in the major works of anthroposophy. Core Anthroposophy makes these essays available, offering present and future students of anthroposophy with a valuable and accessible resource for better understanding the esoteric teachings of Rudolf Steiner.

Paul-Eugen Schiller The Schiller File Supplements to the Collected Edition of Rudolf Steiner Scientific Research suggested by Rudolf Steiner

Anthroposophy has manifold roots in natural science. Rudolf Steiner never tired of saying that the development of scientific awareness had given people the possibility of freedom, that the way to cognizing the spiritual world is based on the natural scientific attitude, and that certainty of such knowledge is comparable to the certainty found in mathematics and natural science.

Drawn from Schiller’s notebooks, this important volume describes natural scientific research by scientists working at the Goetheanum and following suggestions from Rudolf Steiner, leading, for example, to research on gases at low temperatures and high vacuum. The Schiller File is an important resource for those who wish to better understand how to approach and practise natural science from the perspective of spiritual science.
