Viimane tõlkeõpik sel teemal ilmus eesti keeles 1949. aastal. Nüüd on see lünk loodetavasti täidetud. 5 Uhlig 2004. Vt ka retsensiooni Espak 2008, 129–135. 6 Vt nt Sazonov 2007a, 2001–2031; Sazonov 2011, 18–25; Sazonov 2012c, 180–202; Espak, Sazonov 2005, 34–41; Espak, Sazonov 2007, 32–39; Espak 2009a, 19–29; Espak 2010a, 1791–1840; Espak 2005, 47–49; Espak 2010b, 69–84; Johandi 2012, 159–179. 10 tegelevate isikute, semiootikute, kulturoloogide, kirjandusteadlaste jt jaoks. Püüd säilitada loogilist ülesehitust ning vältida detailsemate eri- alaterminite liigset kasutamist peaks tegema raamatu ligipääsetavaks ka laiemale lugejaskonnale (nt keskkooliõpilased, ajaloohuvilised). Koostatud trükis hõlmab endas kogu muistse Lähis-Ida aja- ja kultuuriloo ülevaadet aastatel u 3500–2000 eKr e Lähis-Ida kirjalikku ajalugu alates pronksiaja algusest ning kiilkirja leiutamisest Sumeris ca 3500/3400 eKr kuni Uus-Sumeri riigi langemiseni ca 2000 eKr. Niisiis on autorite peaeesmärk täiendada praeguseni sisuliselt puu- duvat muistse Lähis-Ida aja- ja kultuurilugu käsitlevat eestikeelset tõsistel teaduslikel alustel seisvat kirjandust. Kuna Eestis tegutseb mit- meid vanaaja ajaloo ja Vana-Lähis-Ida uurijaid, ei pidanud raamatu autorid põhjendatuks tõlkida mõni rahvusvahelises keeles ilmunud teaduslik aja- lookäsitlus7 eesti keelde, vaid leidsid, et hoopis otstarbekam on koostada just uus originaaluurimus. vanemteadur Vladimir Sazonov, vanemteadur Peeter Espak ja TÜ doktorant Andreas Johandi Tartu, 2015 7 Vt nt Briant 2002; Wiesehöfer 2005; Kuhrt 1995; Cancik-Kirschbaum 2003; van de Mieroop 2004; Edzard 2004; Selz 2005; Liverani 2014; IDV I; Дандамаев 1985; Емельянов 2003. 11 Lühendid AcOr Acta Orientalia (Budapest) Societates Orientales Batava, Danica, Norvegica, Svecica

Journal of Religion & Society Volume 3 (2001) ISSN 1522-5658 Biblical Assyria and Other Anxieties in the British Empire Steven W. Holloway, American Theological Library Association and Saint Xavier University, Chicago Abstract The successful “invasion” of ancient Mesopotamia by explorers in the pay of the British Museum Trustees resulted in best-selling publications, a treasure-trove of Assyrian antiquities for display purposes and scholarly excavation, and a remarkable boost to the quest for confirmation of the literal truth of the Bible. The public registered its delight with the findings through the turnstyle- twirling appeal of the British Museum exhibits, and a series of appropriations of Assyrian art motifs and narratives in popular culture - jewelry, bookends, clocks, fine arts, theater productions, and a walk-through Assyrian palace among other period mansions at the Sydenham Crystal Palace.

Cuneiform Digital Library Preprints <http://cdli.ucla.edu/?q=cuneiform-digital-library-preprints> Hosted by the Cuneiform Digital Library Initiative (<http://cdli.ucla.edu>) Number 14 Title: Looking both forward and back: imaging cuneiform Authors: Jacob L. Dahl Hendrik Hameeuw Klaus Wagensonner Posted to web: 19 March 2019 Looking both forward and back: imaging cuneiform* Jacob L Dahla, Hendrik Hameeuwb,c and Klaus Wagensonnera Imaging the three-dimensional cuneiform characters, written on clay, metal and on stone, has been a challenge since Carsten Niebuhr, Henry Rawlinson and Julius Oppert published the first of these inscriptions in the 19th century. Since then, hundreds of thousands of these inscriptions have been drawn, photographed, scanned, vectorized, hologramed. They have been included and assembled in printed publications, online databases and annotated media. Today, the importance of imaging these inscriptions is highlighted by the rapid destruction of this shared world heritage in the Near East, and an understanding that all inscribed objects from the ancient Near East are fragile. In our talk we want to ask what do specialists need; what are the requirements that both Assyriologists and colleagues from related fields expect from the visual documentation of ancient inscribed artifacts? In recent years, interactive 2D+ and 3D models of ancient inscriptions have been produced that conceal metric data which surpass the pure imaging purpose. But reliance on such cutting- edge technologies comes at a great increase in cost (equipment, capture and processing time), potentially limiting access to the data. Producing images of ancient inscribed artefacts, and making them available with searchable metadata, allows researchers to ask both traditional research questions as well as entirely new ones, in fact, we may not always know what questions researchers will ask of the data.

• From the Mysterious History of the Sumars Zohid Madrahimov, Namsu, Associate Professor of History, Ph.D
ISSN: 2776-1010 Volume 2, Issue 1, Jan, 2021 From The Mysterious History of the Sumars Zohid Madrahimov, NamSU, Associate Professor of History, Ph.D. Azizbek Karimov Namangan State University History student Annotation The scientific article provides information about the Sumerians, one of the founders of the world's first civilizations, and some of the mysteries that belong to them, which are still unanswered and remain a mystery. The article also contains information about the views and theories put forward by a number of scholars about the Sumerians. Keywords: Civilization, Mesopotamia, Sumer, Sangngiga, Julius Oppert, Delmun, Dravidian, Aratti, Babylon, Henry Rawlinson, The Bible, cuneiform. History is not a mirror of the past. By studying it, we get different ideas and concepts about the past. But there are still puzzles in history that have not been answered. Historians and archaeologists are doing a lot of research and practical research on these mysteries. But different approaches by scientists have led to the emergence of one or more theories in science. One of such mysterious mysteries of history is the origin of the ancient Sumerians and the origin of the writing they created, which has caused a great deal of controversy among historians to this day. The Sumerians are one of the oldest peoples in the world, having developed their highly developed cultures and early ways of governing. The origin of the Sumerians is unknown to science. The images that have come down to us show that their appearance was very different from that of other tribes in the Middle East and the world.

  • Professor Julius Oppert
272 „ OBITUARY NOTICES. PEOFESSOE JULIUS OPPEET. PROFESSOR JULIUS (JULES) OPPERT, the Nestor of Assyriology,, died an octogenarian at Paris on the 21st of August, the last of the scholars of the old school. He was born in Hamburg on the 9th of July, 1825, the eldest of twelve children, eight boys and four girls. Both his parents came from a long line of scholars and financiers. His father was the sixth in descent from Samuel Oppenheimer,. the court factor of the German Emperor Leopold I, who provided the latter with the means of conducting the wars against Turkey, and of undertaking the war of the Spanish Succession. He was a friend of Prince Eugene, and got with his assistance a large number of most valuable Hebrew manuscripts from Turkey. These, with a considerable collection of printed books, he bequeathed to his nephew David of Nikolsburg, afterwards Landesrabbiner of Bohemia. The latter spared no pains and expense to increase the library, which eventually was transferred to Hamburg, and in 1829 sold to the Bodleian Library in Oxford. By a curious coincidence a younger brother of Julius, Gustav (afterwards for some time assistant in the Queen's Library at Windsor Castle and Sanskrit Professor at the Madras Presidency College), was in 1866, at the instigation of the late Professor Max Miiller, engaged in arranging the library of his ancestor. His mother, a sister of the well-known Berlin law professor, Eduard Gans, was descended from the historian and astronomer David Gans, a friend and col- laborator of Tycho de Brahe in Prague, and also from Isaac Abarbanel, the great statesman and counsellor of the kings of Portugal, Castile, and Naples, and learned com- mentator of the Bible.

BURIAL PRACTICES, FUNERARY TEXTS, AND THE TREATMENT OF DEATH IN IRON AGE ISRAEL AND ARAM by RACHEL VIRGINIA KING NABULSI Under the Direction of RICHARD FRIEDMAN ABSTRACT This research encompasses two branches of evidence regarding the treatment of death and burial among the Iron Age cultures of Israel and Aram – the archaeological and the textual. The importance of this investigation lies in placing these groups in dialogue with one another, and in the comprehensive use of both archaeological and textual information. The archaeological aspect of this research begins by collecting archeological data from a large number of burial sites throughout both of the target territories. The range of this data extends from the time of the Late Bronze Age into the Persian period, but the primary focus is upon the Iron Age. The first section of the dissertation relates to each of these areas and what can be learned from a survey of sites over this period, with particular attention paid to commonalities and contrasts among the two cultural groups. The second half of this research encompasses the textual and inscriptional data. Textual data include inscriptions from coffins, tombs, and funerary monuments from the Iron Age through the Persian period in Israel and Aram. Another crucial aspect of this textual data is the text of the Hebrew Bible. The biblical text, particularly the narrative sections of the text, provides a great amount of material for understanding death in Iron Age Israel and Judah. iv INDEX WORDS: Israel, Judah, Aram, Hebrew Bible, death,

STUDIA ROSENTHALIANA 36 (2002-2003) A Longing for India: Indophilia among German-Jewish Scholars of the Nineteenth Century GREGOR PELGER1 […] when several years ago in Berlin a kind lady showed me the pretty pictures that her father – who had been a governor of India for many years – had brought back with him, the tenderly painted and quiet saintly faces seemed so familiar to me, and it was as if I was looking at my own ancestral gallery. Franz Bopp […] gave me some information about my ancestors, and I know exactly now, that I sprang from Bramah’s head and not from the corns of his feet […].2 URING THE NINETEENTH CENTURY a metaphysical thirst for all D things Indian spread across Europe, captivating writers, philoso- phers and philologists. Since the end of the eighteenth century the search for the ‘cradle of mankind’ and the discovery of ancient Oriental texts caused a shift in scholarly attention to the East.3 This re-orientation reduced and marginalised the importance of Judaism and Jewish monothe- ism in the history and cultures of the West. By constructing an Indo- European narrative, scholars gave European societies an instrument with 1. My thanks to Brad Sabin Hill who continuously supported my research, to Annette Meyer for her enlightening advice and to Andrea Schatz for her remarks on additional literature. 2.
