WESTBROOK JUNIOR COLLEGE Portland, Maine

l Mrs. Dorothy Healy DEDICATION

The Class of 1959 is proud to dedicate this year's TOWER to a remarkable woman — Mrs. Dorothy Healy. Throughout her years at Westbrook Junior Col lege she has served most capably as a member of the English Department and as Executive Secretary to the President of the College. Her efficiency in fulfilling these duties has been complemented by her great loyalty and devotion to the ideals of this school.

Those who have been privileged to participate in her courses will always be grateful for the challenge that she has presented to them. Her intelligence and keen sense of humor have made her a valuable member of the Westbrook Family.

Mrs. Healy's sincere willingness to help others has contributed to the close bond between faculty and students. Regardless of her busy schedule, she al ways has time to talk over individual problems.

Enthusiasm is a word which seems to have been made especially for Mrs. Healy. Her genuine interest in campus activities has added much to the West brook spirit.

Thank you, Mrs. Healy, for the fine example you have set for all Westbrook girls. You deserve to be called friend as well as teacher. Left to its own enormous devices the sea in timeless reverie conceives of lite, being itself the world in pantomime. Predicting past and future in one long drawn breath it blends its tides with dawn, . . .

15 TRIBUTE f

Jerry and Charlotte Haley

As the saying goes, the way to one's heart is through the stomach, and certainly Jerry and Charlotte have won a place in the hearts of Westbrook girls over the many years they have faithfully served as cooks at Westbrook Junior College. They have made the Westbrook dining room one to which we could point with pride because they have always demonstrated the fine art of combining utmost efficiency with a pleasant atmosphere.

It will be a great loss to the Westbrook Family when they retire this June, not only because of their fine cooking but because of their friendly and sincere interest in the girls of this college.

When school first opened many of us were nervous and confused, but our tensions were lessened as we quickly grasped the friendly atmosphere of W. J. C. All of us will remember initiation and the many comical incidents. To top it off, Barbara Stacey was the winner for the best costume.

If one visited the Day Hop Lounge the students would be found knitting, playing cards, listening to the radio, playing the piano, and of course, studying.

We are all proud of our two girls, Nancy-Jo Davis and Sheila Espey, who were elected Freshman Class Officers.

"Don't stay in the shower too long — leave some hot water for me! Who's the phone for? Mail's here!" These are the familiar sounds of Goddard Hall.

The Goddard girls began their freshman year at Westbrook by electing Cynthia Buttura, President; Wendy Edmonds, Vice President; Joan Best, Secretary- Treasurer; and Elizabeth Soutter, Social Chairman. Linda Mazzoli was elected our Student Council Representative, but because of illness Linda had to return home. Prisciila Morrison is now our acting Student Council member. Under Mrs. Russell's guidance and friendly understanding, we have had a memorable dormitory life during our first year at Westbrook.

Goddard will never forget Winter Carnival when everyone's car got stuck in the snow, the heated discussions in the smoker when we tried to solve the problems of the world, the way Gordon's Linen suffered when we expressed our artistic ability on their sheets, and the many other good times that made up our unforgettable freshman year.

HERStY HALL

Hersey Hall began its year by electing officers who are: Jane Schoeler, President; Karen Hill, Vice-President; Gail Mitchell, Secretary; Alexandrea Chisholm, Treasurer; Linda Harding, Social Chairman and Ann Flanagan, Student Council Representative. This year Hersey has been well-represented in almost every organization on Campus. Sports have played an important part in the lives of many of our girls. How could we ever forget our party before Thanksgiving Vacation, the hours spent in decorating our smoker for big weekends, and our Cupid on Skis. We are all very proud of our girls who made the Dean's List, and we also wish to express our appreciation to our House Mother, Mrs. Hill, who has helped us along the way.

Houghton is the spirit-filled home away from home where everything is done in unison and harmony. Everyone pitches in to make the house shine, and to prepare meals for hungry mouths. We hope to put these homemaking skills into use in the near future. We have many privileges at Houghton, but the one we treasure the most is that of the use of the kitchen. Our diets don't stand a chance, but one can hardly resist a hearty snack before bed after a rugged night of studying. "Mom" Johnson has lent her patient motherly ways to give the house a wonderful homey atmosphere. Our very capable and friendly officers are: Ellie Burke, President; Judy Greenan, Vice-President; Janet Cerveny, Secretary; Almira Robinson, Treasurer. Joan Chase does an excellent job of keeping things running smoothly as captain of crews, and Jo-Anne Swett, Judy Bice, and Lois Forsberg, do wonderful jobs as Social Chairman and Fire Chiefs, respectively. It has been a wonderful year where we have shared in good times, worked hard, and made many lasting friendships.

PROCTOR HALL

Proctor girls are well represented in every possible activity on campus. The girls were well rewarded for their eager participation in interhouse sports as is shown by their winning record.

Our officers for this year were: Judith Peterson, President; Judith Hogan, Vice-President; Janice Alvarez, Secretary; Jacqueline Drake, Treasurer; and Jenifer Phinney, Student Council Representative.

Our freshman year at Proctor Hall has been a good one with the aid and advice of our housemother, Mrs. Merrill. We look back with pride on our many accomplishments and equally important, we look ahead to our next year as experienced seniors.

Second Row: Constance Baker, Joan Chase, Patricia Smithers, Nancy-Jo Davis, Almira Robinson, Judith Drake, Phyllis Cramer, Nancy Weiser, Martha Hopkins. WOMEN'S ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION Each year the Athletic Association, consisting of those members of the student body interested in participating in Westbrook's athletic program, is managed by a council of approximately sixteen girls. This council, along with the Physical Education Department, works hard during the year to conduct all tournaments; play-days with other colleges; skating parties; Maroon & Gray, Interhouse, Varsity, and Junior Varsity activities, such as field hockey, basketball, Softball, and tennis. The senior officers, leaders, and managers are elected by the entire student body and are announced at the Spring Awards Banquet held in May. In the fall the four freshman officers are elected. The four officers this year include: Nancy Dunnell, President; Penny Chapman, Vice-President; Ellie Burke, Treasurer; Evie Swanson, Secretary. This year the Council sponsored a skating party at in the fall, a sports day with Colby Junior College, a student-faculty volleyball game, and has served refreshments to the visiting teams. The latter was done with the helpful assistance of the Junior Council, whose job it is to aid the Senior Council by acting as assistant managers, referees, timers, and scorers for games. The Day Hops proved their basketball skill by winning the Interhouse Trophy. One of the highlights of the college year is the Winter Carnival Weekend, handled by the executive board of the association. The theme for this year's carnival was "Snow Flake Festival" with an ice show, interhouse snow sculpture competition, an informal Ski Tog Dance, skiing at Pleasant Mountain, the Student- Alumni Basketball Game, and the formal, "Crystal Cotillion," held at the Portland Club on State Street, with music provided by Jimmy Hansen and his orchestra. The dance was highlighted by the crowning by President Blewett of our Winter Carnival Queen, Ellie Burke, who was General Chairman for the weekend. The successful and entertaining weekend was planned as a hearty welcome to President and Mrs. Blewett. The entire council and its advisors, Mrs. Lillian Lee and Miss Barbara Moore, deserve many thanks and congratulations for working so hard and conscientiously.

VARSITY HOCKEY

Although this year the Westbrook Junior College hockey team did not win all of its games, it had a very enjoyable season. High ideals of sportsmanship were exhibited at all times.

A particularly exciting game took place with the University of New Hamp shire, one of our strongest rivals. Forward line players Kelly Brown and Joan Chase played an especially outstanding game.

Many of this year's freshman players will be returning next fall to contribute their experience and skill to next year's team. We know that under the coaching of Miss Moore, they will have a successful year.

67 First Row, Left to Right: Nancy-Jo Davis, Judy Dellicker, Judy Hall, Lorrie Embon, Connie Baker, Penny Chapman. Second Row: Barbara Banks, Chris Roland, Libby Soutter, Jane Schoeler, Rosemary Dickinson, Barbara Stacy, Diana Rogers, Nancy Blackwell, Miss Barbara Moore. Absent: Kelly Brown, Captain. VARSITY BASKETBALL The varsity basketball team had an eventful season, winning most of their games. Under the coaching of Miss Barbara Moore, the girls worked hard to bring victory to Westbrook. One great asset we certainly had in our favor was height. Guards Rosie Dickinson and Libby Soutter picked many a rebound off the backboards, while Connie Baker, Diana Rogers, Nancy Blackwell, Chris Roland, and Barbara Banks performed excellent roles in keeping our opponents from scoring. Accuracy was an important factor for the forwards. Captain Kelly Brown and Barbara Stacy led the scoring with different techniques which proved effec tive. Other forwards, Lorrie Embon, Judy Hall, Judy Dellicker, Jane Schoeler, and Penny Chapman, all helped to keep the pace.

Their purpose is to bring the Westbrook family closer together, acting as junior advisors and being responsible for various duties and activities throughout the year. Under the capable leadership of Ellie Burke, President; Paula Perry, Vice- President; Rolinda Durgin, Secretary; and Carol Oldenbrook, Treasurer, they have been able to carry on the outstanding work this year that Junior Deans have done in the past. Early in the fall they met the incoming freshman class and guided them through their first week of school. Next year's Junior Deans will be elected by the vote of the students and faculty. The selection will be made by the retiring Junior Deans at the traditional "tapping" ceremony during May Weekend — a memorable event for those who attend. INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS CLUB

The International Relations Club sponsored several activities this year on campus. At Christmas time a group went caroling at convalescent homes. Fol lowing mid-semester break, the club organized the annual student-faculty basket ball game, and in the Spring a group went on a field trip to the White Mountains.

The club was under the capable leadership of Carole Snow, President; Margaret Hood, Vice President; Sue Casey, Treasurer; Joyce Doherty, Secretary; and Nancy McClellan, Corresponding Secretary.

Miss Usha Nand and tAr. Charles Scontras gave the club a great deal of their time and help this year in the organization of our activities.

THE MARGRAY

Thanks to the enthusiasm and hard work of our editorial board and staff, this year's Margray has proven itself to be a true college paper, and for the first time has become a member of the Associated Collegiate Press.

Under the direction of Editor-in-Chief Connie Baker, Business and Advertising Manager Chris Baker, and Editors Donna Beshara, Bobbi Troubh, Judith Greenan, and Dottie Kay Packard, several new columns and more pictures have been added.

House news has been combined into "Around the Circle," a colorful and spritely column by our mystery student, Hester Hinks. Another addition is "It's News," a special column of recent engagements and pinnings.

We wish to thank our advisor, Miss Greta Kerr, whose interest, helpful criticism, and excellent supervision made our paper what it is today.
