We're the Belles . . . twenty-one sisters in the Westbrook Family . . . Have fun? . . . Sure; at the movies with Knof and Bebo; at the piano with Sue and Marianne; square dancing in the smoker; singing and "coffeeing" in Mom's room; laughing at "nothing, really" with Johnny and Barb; at basketball games with Julie and Bebo; working on our Hallowe'en skit and snow sculpture; "Studying" in the smoker at 1 a.m. with Bettyann, Beannie, Jean, and DoDo; sampling Betty and Crispy's cooking; listening for mice in Ruthie's and Kay's closet; skiing with Judy; talking "Luigi Style" with Fuzz; packing Laura's suitcases with over-due library books; helping Patty col lect pizza orders every night around midnight; and making Moke's room Grand Central Station.

We've had music . . . from the Brahm's Requiem to "Turkey in the Straw" . . . our Honor System . . . our faulty alarm clocks . . . the "New Look" . . . and, of course, we HAVE studied. . . . And best of all, we've had "Mom" Howes with us. . . . 1954 has been a year with memories to last a lifetime.

The old ship, Deering, has weathered another year, and it will soon come to the end of its voyage of '54. The crew of twenty-five, led by Captain Beverly has had a successful year. These "roaring twenty fivers" are in excellent health due to the well planned chow dished out by Bette, Betty, Nan and Company. Snow White and her seven dwarfs with help from Barb A. have been in charge of all cleaning duties. On board our ship is a royal guest, Queen Ruthie and her servant Barbara J. The duties of the day have been carried out by the most capable: Bunty, in charge of the log; Pat P, dance instructor; Del, executive secretary; Judy N. knitting instruc tor; Sally, bridge champion; Carolyn, date bureau; and Janet, in charge of the brig. The evening hours have been spent in bloody battle on deck with Jill, Pauline, and Carol; or in the cabin listening to Judie's wild tales of hither and yon and to Jackie's "Garden of Verses". Jerry has always managed to have a helicopter fly pizza our way just at lights out time so that we have miserable nights dreaming of monsters! As our ship sinks slowly in the West, we shinny up the mast to bid a final fare well to Westbrook.

Peering Seated, Left to Right: Hope Turner, Gloria Grafton, Estelle Townsend, Roberta Douglas, Joanne Minott, Marilyn Kidder, Bella Gardella, Kitty Bonney, Helen Rancourt, Virginia Bean. Standing, Left to Right: Connie Strout, Eleanor Bond, Patricia Bunker, Sandy Dunning, Gwen Leighton, Phyllis Chapman, Mary Lawrence, Joanne Clark, Joan Giggey, Elaine Anderson.

Our scrapbooks at Melville have been filled with some pretty wonderful mem ories. We'll remember the fun of the Halloween Skits, the "Birthday-a-month" par ties, the formals, and Winter Carnival.

Thanks to our President, Estelle, and to other officers Gloria, Bobbie and Hope.

Congratulations are also in order for the Melville Hoopsters — and Ginny's playing — a smoker special.

With all the studying, we found plenty of time to make some wonderful friends. With thanks to our housemothers, Miss Caputi and Miss Dow, the '54 Melvillites close the covers to a book of treasured memories.

1954 has been a good year for the Day Hops of the Westbrook Family. The end of the Interhouse Basketball season culminated in an additional win to be inscribed on our plaque. Our Thanksgiving Turkey Trot Dance provided funds for the holiday dinner of a needy family — greatly appreciated and very gratifying to our efforts. Judy Blumenthal brought us further honor by being elected a member of the Queen's Court at Winter Carnival. "Little Black Sambo" was a hit in the Carnival Skits, and brought us first prize for its "original and clever interpretation." The "Shamrock Shag," our annual St. Patrick's Day Dance, was also very successful. (es, 1954 has been a wonderful year; something to look forward to for poten tial seniors, and a cherished memory for Day Hop alumnae of the Westbrook Family.

Houghton Hall — the co-op dorm! It sounds harmless enough, doesn't it? Let's try a close up. Into this little factory in September came a congregation of the world's worst cooks, the school's most confused housekeepers, and the State's clumsiest dishwashers.

Life was a battle for many months as smoke and sparks wandered from the kit chen to the nostrils of the little factory workers, warning them of another sooty meal. But with the approach of Christmas came a glimmer of hope. The house wore a strange new polish and its occupants lost their wasted look for one of bulbous contentment.

The dishes' fatality rate dwindled somewhat as the crews learned to pyramid their dish stacks in elegant formations. With the New Year came the mice raids leaving screams of terror rocking the house from morning till night. Following the mice raids came other raids, but our women never faltered.

There was no neglect of our physical condition. Every night brought mighty mattress wars and jitterbug orgies. It was a year of accomplishment, and to condense a wonderful experience, it was a year of growth of complete friendship and fun.

Laughter, fun, and companionship have made this year something to be remem bered. It didn't take the girls in Goddard Hall long to set off the spark that revealed the qualities of thoroughly established freshmen.

Jody, our president, fairly beams with delight when she hears the famous old French proverb, "It wasn't TOO funny." Put down those needles, Pat and Rae, it's time to open the books again . . . funny, we never knew that Bowdoin was just another department of WJC, did we, Bunny? Likewise for PJC, right, Helen? . . . Congratulations, Ann and Joan on those fraternity pins. . . . Beer mugs are just as good, aren't they, Bobby? . . . Caroline, Eunice and Val have held up the scholastic standards of WJC. . . . Joan and Gayle never seem to get tired of making pie beds. Hallowe'en Skit, Winter Carnival, Ice Skit . . . need we say more. Miss Haugum and Miss Stinchfield were two wonderful housemothers; giving us a great deal in guidance and understanding.

A new smoker rug was added to our smoker by our housemothers, along wrth a poem ending, "So here's a token of our affection, Selected after due reflection. To beautify your smoking habit With love from Dewey, Cushman, Babbott." At Carnival, the Hersey Cinderella won first place, and we finally saw 12:00 p.m. on the outside! During the year, we've had so many laughs . . . remember Millie Wenn and her multi-colored unmentionables; also her version of Jerry Lewis . . . when Mary Jane, Sally Wiggin, Steph Carter, and Pris Wheeler found some doughnuts in the cafe with a note from Bowdoin . . . our "Egg Diets" . , . and many, many more. It's agreed we've had a happy and prosperous Westbrook Year!

Congratulations to May, our first engaged gal. . . . Bet's surprise cookies. . . . Dolly, did you say that your last date was a "Grubb?" . . . Nancy's audition for Arthur Godfrey. . . . The Junior Deans, an honorary organization of fifteen senior girls, work closely with Dean Hobson and Dean Flavin to promote the Westbrook Way. Among the specific duties the Jay-Dees assume is that of serving as junior advisors, linking the student body and the administration. Guiding visitors around the campus is also a function of the Jay-Dees. This year, as is traditional, the Jay-Dees conducted the Candlelight Service, held early in the fall. This service is the climax to freshman orientation, with each Jay- Dee's candle, and finally the candles of the entire student body, symbolizing the qualities of the Westbrook Girl. An informal meeting of present and previous Jay-Dees was held this year dur ing Winter Carnival, and it is hoped that this meeting will be continued in future years. The fund-raising project, to supplement the furniture fund, is another Jay-Dee activity. During May Weekend, the Jay-Dees conduct the Tapping Ceremony, at which time the future Junior Deans are officially made known. The Junior Dean officers are President, Barbara Comstock; Vice-President, Sheila Johnson; Secretary, Suzanne Shailer; and Treasurer, Nancy Packard.

The 1953-1954 Glee Club, under fhe direction of Marshall Bryant, and accom panied by Miss Caputi, started in full swing early in the season.

With both an increase in the number of members, and an increase in interest the girls sang through the season with much vitality and pleasing tone.

During the year, the Glee Club sang at the Kiwanis Club; during Chapel services; at a group concert for Handel's Messiah in City Hall; gave a joint concert of the Brahm's Requiem with the Glee Club; and during May Week end, gave a concert from the steps of Proctor Hall.

The officers of Glee Club were Leanne Hawkes, President; and Sue Shailer, Librarian.

The Masque and Candle started off the year by changing their point system to enable more girls to earn the coveted key in two years. In the early fall the Club had an awards dinner at the Eastland Hotel to give keys to those girls already hav ing accumulated sufficient points. The Club sincerely hopes that the dinner will become a bi-annual affair at Westbrook. In November the Club helped Miss Haugum, Miss Caputi, and Mr. Macfarlan produce the American Muse, a historical narrative, undertoned by symphonic music, and interpreted through modern dance. It was the first production of its kind at Westbrook and proved a huge success. "The Babe At The Inn" was the Christmas play. In the spring another play was put on and the Club held a second awards banquet for those girls who had earned their keys during the school year. Officers of the 1954 Masque and Candle were President, Barbara Haynes; Vice- President, Cynthia Miller; Treasurer, Priscilla Ward; Executive Secretary, Pat Libby; and Recording Secretary, Florence Robertson. Miss Haugum, a new addition to the Westbrook faculty and head of the Speech department, was our advisor. Her con stant pep and new ideas proved vitally stimulating throughout the year.

Again, the Student Religious Association has had a successful year. We were in charge of planning Convocation services and the Grace at evening meals. A few of our members attended a religious conference in Massachusetts.

One of the year's highlights was Religious Emphasis Week held in April. We feel that one of the best ways to obtain an understanding and a respect for the faith of others is to hear from qualified persons just what their group believes.

We extend our appreciation to Miss Flavin and Miss Dewey for their assistance as advisors and to the staff of officers.

In September the IRC membership grew to an all time high. Mr. Macfarlan and Miss Caputi were elected as advisors. The IRC sponsored the year's first faculty vs. students basketball game — ending in a tie. Early in the Fall, the IRC rejoined the Carnegie Foundation, which once again affiliated the Westbrook IRC with the national organization. Coffee Pot discussions were held jointly with the SRA throughout the year. "North Star" — a full-length movie — was shown to raise money for the adoption of a war orphan. The annual dance was held in March with proceeds being sent to the war orphan fund. The main project of the year was the High School Forum held in April. The IRC was honored in having as key speaker, Colonel Ben. C. Limb, the permanent repre sentative to the United Nations from the Republic of Korea. Students from the sur rounding high schools and professors from the Maine colleges participating in the Forum made it the success it was. This year has been a milestone in the history of the IRC. The officers were President, Laura Page; Vice-President, Betty Saccone; Record ing Secretary, Jean Shorey; Corresponding Secretary, Marilyn Kidder; and Treasurer, Sandra Dunning.

The fall of 1953 found the reorganization of the Science Club with a new set of officers. President, Beverly Pollard; Vice-President, Janice Jones; Secretary, Dotty Stratton; and Treasurer, Judy Blumenthal. With such advisors as Miss Babbott, Mr. Gordon, and Mr. Hooghkirk, the club has been made a benefitting extra-curricular activity for those interested in science. A well planned and interesting program organized by tTie members has been displayed during the year. This program consisted of speakers and films on various science fields and were presented to the entire Westbrook family. The annual trip to Boston to the Harvard Medical Museum was a valuable experience for all members. The outstanding event of the year is the Science Club exhibit held during May Weekend. The students prepare for display an assortment of homemade models of subjects studied during the year.

The Retailing Club is an organization comprised of all retailing students and any other girls who are interested in the field of retailing. Its purpose is to introduce to the student outstanding people and careers in this particular field, and to promote the knowledge and interest in retailing.

The fall project of the club was their presentation of a fashion show which featured some girls as models, and others as "wardrobe hands." The Retailing Dance in April terminated the activities of the club for the year.

The officers were Danny Russell, President; Beverly Been, Vice-President; Bella Gardella, Secretary; Barbara Holt, Treasurer; and Carolyn Kendall, Social Chairman. Miss Curry is the advisor of the Retailing Club.

The Margray staff has gained invaluable experience this year by being allowed to paste up, cut up, proof read, and generally take care of their own paper. Of course, we have made our share of boners but we thank Mr. Gridley for giving us the opportunity to really get into some newspaper work. With the all round co-operation of the entire Margray staff, we were able to increase to monthly publications. With these additional issues we could include more current news, variety of pictures, and the results of numerous polls taken on campus. The Margray staff sincerely thanks the faculty and students for their helpful criticism and praise during the year, for it is only through this that we can improve our paper.

If you like the lure and fun of the outdoors, you've been to the Farm this year. Or you may have gone on the Katahdin trip early last fall. Or you might have gone along on some of the day trips to Pleasant Mountain in Bridgton, skiing or tobog ganing. If you were one of those who helped paint the kitchen at the Farm, you remember how much fun those trips were; the bus rides, the singing, the movies, the meals, and the games — let alone the fun of the sports.

Weekends at the Farm, in addition to the ski and mountain-climbing jaunts, are planned by the Outing Club Council, the governing board of the Outing Club. Mem bers of the Council act as trip leaders, and publicity chairmen for trips, as well as sponsoring them.

In the fall, three members of the Council attended the Inter-Collegiate Outing Club Conference at the Camden Snow Bowl, gathering ideas for trips, and sugges tions for further Outing Club Activities. The Ski-Tog Fashion Show, the showing of sports movies and slides, and the planning of Winter Carnival with WAA were other functions of the 1953-54 Outing Club Council.

The officers of the Council were Barbara Comstock, President; Judy Weeks, Vice- President; Pat Marsaw, Secretary; and Carolyn Kendall, Treasurer.

Outing Club Council Left to Right: Sabra Harriman, Virginia Richards, Dean Hobson, Janet Mattson, Geraldine Mayo, Frances Silver, Virginia Bean, Anne Perkins.

This year the Student Council has been working under a revised constitution. The Council has assisted in the organization of the picture booklet which is designed to advertise the Westbrook Way.

The Student Council sent representatives to attend the New England Student Government conference held at Colby Junior College in March. Seminars were held discussing honor systems and problems concerning student government.

The Council consists of nine members; one representative from each house and two Day Hops, one from each class.

The officers are President, Janet Mattson; Vice-President, Anne Perkins; and Secretary, Sabra Harriman.

The Student Council has been confronted with many problems, and in general, has had a very busy and successful year.

The members of the WJ.C. Riding Club during the past year have enjoyed

supper rides and the activities of Winter Carnival and May Festival.

The officers were: President, Jean Knofla; Vice-President, Elizabeth Buck; Sec

retary, Marilyn Monteith; Treasurer, Patrycia Porter.

We wish to thank our instructor Clara Vining, our advisors Miss Caputi and Mr.

Macfarlan and, of course, Jerry for his wonderful meals.
