Reading Excavated Laozi: the Lens of Western Scholarship*

With different version of excavated Laozi, it attracts the attention of researchers. This paper examines the study of unearthed Laozi by western scholars by using Mawangtui and Guodia Laozi,attempts to give readers a basic picture of unearthed Laozi study in western academia.Since there is no way that I can hope to introduce all western studies of unearthed Laozi, this paper will restrict the presentation to just the following topic: Mawangtui Laozi, Guodian Laozi, “Tai Yi Sheng Shui”, “Wu Xing”, and Methodology. Keywords: Laozi, Excavated Laozi, Chinese Unearthed Documents Introduction The purpose of this article is to give a relatively comprehensive survey of western Sinologists’ studies of Laozi (老子) from the pre-Qin through Han periods. This idea comes from an article written by Martin Kern and he raises a question that deserves attention (Kern, 2019). He points out monolingualism and monoculturalism are the fundamental limitations of the current ancient Chinese studies in Mainland China. Too many Chinese scholars cannot master any foreign languages. Even if a translation works has been published, Chinese scholars have so far paid very little attention to them. Of course, many translation works also have mistranslations. I believe the problems he mentioned are common in Mainland China nowadays. -

He collaborated with Joseph Needham in writing Science and Civilisation in China, Volume 5, part 6, “Military Science and Technology” (1994) and is currently completing Volume 5, part 8, the third and final volume on the military in the Science and Civilisation in China series.] * * * Introduction The publication of Chen Songchang’s 陳 松 長 Mawangdui boshu “Xingde” yanjiu lungao 馬 王 堆 帛 書《刑 德》研 究 論 稿,2 in which the full transcrip- tions and analysis of the three versions (jia 甲, yi 乙, bing 丙) of the Xingde 刑 德 manuscripts found at Mawangdui in 1973 were presented to the scholarly world for the first time, was an important event for the study of the Mawangdui manuscripts and of Chinese military history. These hitherto neglected texts throw much light on one complex system of military divination and complement the numerous studies that have appeared over the past thirty years on the other philosophical, medical, and historical manuscripts found in the tomb. This paper will offer some preliminary reflections on the history of Chinese military divina- tion in general within the context of Chinese military practice. It will seek to demonstrate that, although ignored by most previous researchers on Chinese military studies (bingxue 兵 學), divination for military purposes (bingzhan 兵 占) was one of the fundamental features of warfare in pre-modern China. -

Minnesota Rather than one who lays claim to being an expert in your science of Vertebrate Pest Control, it is only possible to say that I come with an appreciation for the work you are doing. My valuing of pest control took a quantum leap recently. The occasion was the entering and occupying of our home in St. Paul by one of the area's wild squirrels. No doubt this sort of thing would be a small problem as your challenges go, but being an amateur it took me no less than a week to evict this wiley intruder. So you can see why I am a stronger believer than ever in the principle that man is man, and animals are animals, and never the twain shall meet, and am a firm supporter of people like yourselves who are trying to keep things that way. Here at your conference today, I find myself wearing two hats. One is that of a hunter who loves the challenges and associations that come with hunting. The other hat is that of a biologist, with training and experience in the field of wildlife management. First, may I speak to you wearing the hat of the hunter. Those of us who are hunters today have a somewhat harassed, beleaguered feeling, and for good reasons. There are something like 25 organiza tions existing today that are anti-hunting in orientation. Five of these alone raised over 14 million dollars to support their anti-hunting activities in one recent year. -

Chu Email: [email protected] Phone: x2935 Office: PNE 348 Office Hours: Tuesdays, 10:30-11:30 AM; Thursdays, 12:30-1:30 PM Course Number: ANTH 223 Course Location: PNE 349, Mondays and Thursdays 11:10 AM-12:20 PM Course Description: This course draws from anthropological and cultural-historical frameworks to explore the contemporary terrain of China in relation to an emergent “New World (Dis)Order.” While introducing students to key concepts and major historical developments in twentieth-century China, the course will focus largely on ethnographic studies of social change and everyday life betwixt and between the Mao (1949-1978) and Post-Mao (1978-Present) eras. Topics examined include nation-building, Chinese modernities, capitalist development, gendered desires, class inequalities, religious revivalism and cosmopolitan identities. Students will be asked to critically and creatively think about change and continuity in contemporary China not only in terms of the organization of Chinese political institutions, but also in relation to the role of Chinese diasporic populations and other transnational and globalizing forces in producing spatial-temporal imaginaries. Course Objectives: 1. Heighten student appreciation of historical change and continuity, cultural diversity and the complexity of social issues in contemporary China, including China’s interconnectedness and positionality in the world order. 2. Broaden student knowledge and appreciation of anthropological approaches to the study of contemporary China, with an emphasis on ethnographic participant-observation across a diverse range of settings. 3. Develop students’ understanding and mastery of key concepts and analytical frameworks for examining China from an anthropological perspective. -

From" Morning Sun" to" Though I Was Dead": The Image of Song Binbin in the "August Fifth Incident" Wei-li Wu, Taipei College of Maritime Technology, Taiwan The Asian Conference on Film & Documentary 2016 Official Conference Proceedings Abstract This year is the fiftieth anniversary of the outbreak of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. On August 5, 1966, Bian Zhongyun, the deputy principal at the girls High School Attached to Beijing Normal University, was beaten to death by the students struggling against her. She was the first teacher killed in Beijing during the Cultural Revolution and her death had established the “violence” nature of the Cultural Revolution. After the Cultural Revolution, the reminiscences, papers, and comments related to the “August Fifth Incident” were gradually introduced, but with all blames pointing to the student leader of that school, Song Binbin – the one who had pinned a red band on Mao Zedong's arm. It was not until 2003 when the American director, Carma Hinton filmed the Morning Sun that Song Binbin broke her silence to defend herself. However, voices of attacks came hot on the heels of her defense. In 2006, in Though I Am Gone, a documentary filmed by the Chinese director Hu Jie, the responsibility was once again laid on Song Binbin through the use of images. Due to the differences in perception between the two sides, this paper subjects these two documentaries to textual analysis, supplementing it with relevant literature and other information, to objectively outline the two different images of Song Binbin in the “August Fifth Incident” as perceived by people and their justice. -
