My valuing of pest control took a quantum leap recently. The occasion was the entering and occupying of our home in St. Paul by one of the area's wild squirrels. No doubt this sort of thing would be a small problem as your challenges go, but being an amateur it took me no less than a week to evict this wiley intruder. So you can see why I am a stronger believer than ever in the principle that man is man, and animals are animals, and never the twain shall meet, and am a firm supporter of people like yourselves who are trying to keep things that way. Here at your conference today, I find myself wearing two hats. One is that of a hunter who loves the challenges and associations that come with hunting. The other hat is that of a biologist, with training and experience in the field of wildlife management. First, may I speak to you wearing the hat of the hunter. Those of us who are hunters today have a somewhat harassed, beleaguered feeling, and for good reasons. There are something like 25 organiza­ tions existing today that are anti-hunting in orientation. Five of these alone raised over 14 million dollars to support their anti-hunting activities in one recent year.

Jones: Goodnight Saigon GOODNIGHT SAIGON: BILLY JOEL’S MUSICAL EPITAPH TO THE VIETNAM WAR Morgan Jones* Billy Joel adopted new personae and took on new roles in several songs on both 1982’s The Nylon Curtain1 and his penultimate studio album to date, 1989’s Storm Front.2 In what some have seen as an attempt to reach a more adult audience, to “move pop/rock into the middle age and, in the process, earn critical respect,”3 Joel put on new hats (literally, at times: his fedora-wearing balladeer appears prominently in the video for “Allentown”) for “Allentown” and “The Downeaster ‘Alexa’,” “Pressure” and “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” and “Goodnight Saigon” and “Leningrad.”4 Each of these pairs of songs saw Joel endeavoring to make statements about issues that were bigger than he and his own life, which was in stark contrast to his sources of inspiration for his earlier, more self-centered albums.

It argues that the boundaries between humans and animals were porous. The only unique capacities that human beings are credited with were first (widely) the ability to develop their unique potentials (chengren 成º), and, second (in a very few texts), the capacity to respond with greater sensitivity to the resonant world around them. In both contexts, the extant terms make use of two terms, ling H and jingshen 精^. Part II of the essay then turns to examine the most influential Euro-American theories cited in today’s secondary literature regarding the animal-human divide. None of these seem remotely like the theories articulated in early China. In Part III, the essay examines vitalism, which is an unusual instance in early modern Europe where an important theory seems to approach the views of early China, with the express aim of reminding readers that we need not automatically posit an impassable gulf between East and West, but can, instead, profit from wider reading that yields more comparative insights. I know thy works, and thy labor, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them who are evil; and thou hast tried them who say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars; and hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name’s sake hast labored, and hast not fainted. Nevertheless, I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. Remember, therefore, from where thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works, or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy lampstand out of its place, except thou repent. (Revelation 2:1-5) In the New Testament there are two epistles to the Ephesians. Paul wrote one of them. (In the better manuscripts the inscription en Epheso, that is, “in Ephesus” is not there. It was penciled in, apparently, because it was a circular epistle, intended to make the rounds of the churches there in the province of Asia.) The second epistle to the Ephesians is definitely directed to the church at Ephesus. It is the first of seven letters to seven churches which our Lord sent through John.
