His current research explores the use of statistics by jour- nalists in the Arabian Gulf. He worked as a journalist for a Saudi newspaper. Katherine Blair Katherine is a former television presenter and reporter with MCTV in Timmins, CBOT in Ottawa, CBC in CornerBook and Happy Valley-Goose Bay. She spent twelve years at ITV Yorkshire at Calendar News and working as a producer/director in regional features and documentaries. She is Senior Lecturer and Broad- cast Journalism Programme Leader at Leeds Trinity University where she has taught since 2007. Aneurin Bosley Aneurin is an assistant professor in the School of Journalism and Communication at Carleton University. Mr. Bosley joined Carleton after 14 years as an editor at the Toronto Star. Much of that time was spent in digital, where Mr. Bosley worked extensively with interactive technologies. He has a Master of Journal- ism from Carleton and an Master of Arts in philosophy from the University of Ottawa. Before joining the Toronto Star, Mr. Bosley was the editor of The Internet Business Journal and a technology columnist on CBC Radio One in Ottawa. Mr. Bosley was also writer and co-producer for Paul Kane Interactive , a digital exhibit that was installed at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. Alex Canner Alex is a Senior Lecturer in Journalism at the University of Derby, specialised in broadcast media, teaching all aspects of writing, recording and editing techniques across TV, radio and Multimedia. He has a particular interest in the fast pace of breaking news and the way many different media platforms handle and broad- cast these types of stories to a wide demographic. He has a PGCert in Higher Education and is a fellow of Advance HE. Ivana Ebel Ivana is a Senior Lecturer in Journalism at the University of Derby working with undergraduate, masters, and PhD students. She has a broad international experience and holds a PhD in Communication and Media Sciences (Leipzig University - Germany); a Masters in Digital Media (Bremen University - Germany); a Bachelor in Communication Sciences – Journalism (Univali, Itajaí – Brazil), and a Post-Graduate Certifi- cate in Higher Education (PGCertHe – University of Derby – UK). Her research is concentrated on media convergence, digital storytelling, visual rhetoric and mobile media consumption. She is multilingual and has more than two decades of international industry experience. Elisabeth Eide Elisabeth is professor of journalism studies at Oslo Metropolitan University, and furthermore a writer and a journalist. She has published a large number of books and research articles on a variety of themes, such as conflict journalism, climate journalism, gender, journalism and diversity, and has received several awards. She has worked and travelled much in South Asia and the Middle East. EditorialArticles Volume 8 number 2 Journalism Education page 5 Ato Erzan-Essien Ato is a senior lecturer on the Journalism Programme at the University of Chester in the United King- dom where he has taught since 2005. His prior experience as a practising journalist included working as a newspaper reporter and sub-editor at local and regional newspapers in the north west of England, before becoming editor of The Big Issue in the North magazine – a publication sold by homeless people across the north of England. A fellow of the Higher Education Academy, he is currently undertaking a research PhD examining notions of professionalism in journalism law and ethics teaching. Jairo Lugo-Ocando Jairo holds a BA (Zulia University, Venezuela), MA (University of Lancaster, UK), and PhD (University of Sussex, UK), and is a Professor in Residence and Director of Executive and Graduate Education at Northwestern University in Qatar. His current research strands explores the use of statistics and quantita- tive data by the news media and particularly the use that journalists make of statistics and data to articulate news. He is author of seven books and more than 30 journal articles in the top referees’ journal in his field. He worked as a journalist, correspondent and news editor for several media outlets in Latin America and the USA. Victoria Neumark-Jones Victoria is a recently retired Associate Professor, Journalism, at London Metropolitan University, United Kingdom. For many years an education and arts journalist, she has worked mainly in print for national newspapers and periodicals. As a university teacher for the last 13 years, she has become passionately in- terested in helping to develop young people from disadvantaged backgrounds into the kind of questioning, informed journalists which the world needs today. Her students describe her as tough but fair and that they learn a lot from her. She lives in London. Rune Ottosen Rune is Professor emeritus in journalism at OsloMet - Oslo Metropolitan University. He has written exten- sively on press history and media coverage of war and conflicts. He is co-author with Stig Arne Nohrstedt of several books, the latest New War, New Medis and New War Journalism (2014). In 2010 he was one of the editors and co-author of the four volume Norwegian Press History, Norsk Presses historie (1767-2010). He is a vice-president of Norwegian PEN and a member of the Norwegian UNESCO-commission Ken Pratt Ken is Lecturer in Journalism at UWS (University of the West of Scotland).   • Spontaneous Generation of Life Is the Inevitable Outcome of Time, Chance, and the Right Chemical Conditions
    “The origin of life appears almost a miracle, so many are the conditions which would have had to be satisfied to get it going.” –Francis Crick, co-discoverer of the DNA double helix structure1 Introduction According to evolutionary theory, all life – bacteria, plants, and people – evolved from a hypothetical first cell, which allegedly arose spontaneously from chemical substrates. This is said to have happened over 3 billion years ago. That hypothetical first cell has been called LUCA (last universal common ancestor). This first cell is assumed to be at the very base of Darwin’s hypothetical “tree of life”. It is almost universally claimed that life came from non-life (abiogenesis). Is this good science? It is almost universally claimed that spontaneous generation of life is the inevitable outcome of time, chance, and the right chemical conditions. Is this claim even remotely credible? School curricula, textbooks, educational science programs, and countless museums consistently insist there is a strong scientific case for the spontaneous origin of life. From a naturalistic evolutionary perspective, it should not be surprising that spontaneous generation is assumed to be feasible, as it is essential to the evolutionary story. We can’t have Darwin’s “tree of life” without the trunk, which emerged from the primordial seed of that first cell. We are continuously told stories that sound like plausible scenarios for how simple inorganic molecules might have come together to give rise to the first living cell. However, upon careful examination, we find that the stories being told are not only extremely speculative – they are rationally indefensible.

    TRANS MEDIA WATCH – ADDITIONAL SUBMISSION TO THE LEVESON INQUIRY – FEBRUARY 2012 A. Introduction Trans Media Watch (TMW) wishes to make this additional submission to the Leveson Inquiry into press standards, ethics and culture. It follows the submission made by TMW to the Inquiry in January 20121, and the oral evidence given by Helen Belcher to the Inquiry on behalf of TMW on 8 February 2012. In our original submission, TMW explained some of the various ways that the press uses to misrepresent the trans and intersex communities, including themes such as “trans as fraud”, “trans as undeserving” and “trans as deviant”. We feel it will be useful for the Inquiry to review the coverage of trans issues in the press, specifically but not exclusively from The Sun and the Mail newspapers, since 8 February. In summary: The press has published two main stories featuring trans people over the past two weeks, both appearing on front pages. This is in addition to the standard low level coverage that trans issues get in the mainstream media. With both there are significant concerns over misrepresentation, with corresponding effects on public perception of the issues. With both there are significant concerns over placing vulnerable people, including innocent children, at risk of physical violence. The key issue is the complete lack of respect shown to trans people. Far from mending their ways and reporting trans stories more sensitively, as claimed in person before the Inquiry2, the press has shown a distasteful rush to objectify and sensationalise these stories in a way that places real people in real danger.

However, its criteria for canon-building has been modeled largely after modernist ideas about formal complexity and criteria for disinterested, detached, “objective” aesthetic judgment derived from one of the major philosophical debates in Western thought: the mind-body problem. This thesis analyzes two American independent comics in order to dissect the aspects of a comic work that allow it to be categorized as “art” in the canonical sense. Chris Ware’s Building Stories is a sprawling, Byzantine comic that exhibits characteristically modernist ideas about the subordination of the body to the mind and art’s relationship to mass culture. Rob Schrab’s Scud: The Disposable Assassin provides a counterpoint to Building Stories in its action-heavy stylistic approach, developing ideas about the merging of the mind and the body and the artistic and the commercial.
