Never was the concept of “imperial” in this context and research trajectory limited only to forms of imperialism that depended on the annexation of territory. Some early media-imperialism scholars were based in Latin American countries that were no lon- ger colonies of any empire and had never been formal colonies of the United States. Other scholars conducted their research from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. During this time, “media imperialism” was principally applied to the media power and influence of the United States and was deployed in studies of the considerable influence of US-based media corporations in and on the media systems and cultures of other countries, especially those in the global South. Throughout the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, a prevalent focus within media-imperialism literature on the United States reflects an understandable preoccupation with the actual economic, military, and media power of the United States. But scholarship on media imperialism has also extended to the expansive media systems, industries, and prod- ucts of older empires (e.g., British, French, and Russian) and once subalternized or peripheral countries (e.g., China, India, Brazil, and South Korea). These little “media imperialisms” spread from countries that evince considerable media ownership, dis- tribution, and impact within a given geocultural zone but are themselves structurally weaker than and shaped by stronger global imperial powers such as the United States. Just as there is no reason why media-imperialism scholarship should be limited to only one empire, there is also no reason why such research should be limited to only one period or phase in the history of an empire. For more than four decades, some scholars have preferred the term “cultural im- perialism” to “media imperialism” (and these terms are often used interchangeably). Sometimes, these terms were invoked to simply acknowledge that the media corpora- tions (e.g., TV broadcasters) and media products (e.g., news stories and TV shows) of some countries were significant vehicles for economic and cultural influence in other countries. Other times, they flagged how the phenomena of imperialism extended well 1 19_0411-Boyd_Barrett.indb 1 6/25/19 6:35 AM 2 Oliver Boyd-Barrett and Tanner Mirrlees beyond media industries and products to encompass economic models, patterns of governance, education systems, languages, ideas, norms, and values—“whole ways of life.” Overall, research on media imperialism—whether focused on the media itself or the media within the broader compass of cultural imperialism—takes the “media” to be a diversity of complex social institutions. While most of these institutions are owned by corporations, some are also part of states and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). That is to say, a wide and growing array of private and public media institutions are the source of the “media” of “media imperialism.” Some of these include the corporations that own the news, telecommunications, film and TV, advertising and public relations, music, interactive games, and internet platforms and social media sites. Frequently, these different media segments are owned by the same vertically and horizontally inte- grated global media giants: as types of media diversify, ownership centralizes. In any case, the study of media imperialism in the twenty-first century should focus on the whole gamut of “the media” in the context of imperialism, old, new, and emerg- ing. Points of focus when studying media imperialism may include media financing, media ownership, and intellectual property control; media-corporate business models (including advertising, subscription, sponsorship, and, increasingly, data aggregation); the organization and management of particular internationalizing media products, including cross-border media production, distribution, and exhibition; the integration of new hardware and software technologies with older media models and forms; the characteristics of specific media products (the form), as well as the cultural stories and images they carry (the content); and, of course, the complexities of cross-border media reception, interpretation, and use.     Terhi Rantanen LSE Media Globalization So much has happened since the word globalization was first introduced in the early 1990s. Originally introduced as a concept of something positive that would transform many worlds into one – something, as Albrow put it, ‘by which the peoples of the world are incorporated into a single world society, global society’ (Albrow, 1990: 45), and even into a ‘global village’ (McLuhan (1964/1994), it is increasingly seen in negative terms. Soon after its introduction the very word it became a target of anti-globalization movements protesting against unforeseen consequences of injustices accompanying globalization around the world. Rarely has an academic concept so quickly reached the streets and so rapidly become a symbol of inequality. What anti-globalization demonstrators, who often identified themselves also as anti-capitalist and anti-neoliberalist, could not foresee was that right-wing populist parties would also start blaming globalization for the erosion of national economies, politics and culture. As the Financial Times wrote, ​ ​ Mr Trump’s sweeping rhetoric and compulsive tweeting resonated among millions of Americans who have felt marginalized by globalization. In the US, as told by Mr Trump, globalization and free trade have rewarded only a privileged few. There is a kernel of truth in Mr Trump’s generalizations, to which more centrist leaders have given too little notice. Inequality has risen and median incomes have stagnated or fallen in recent years, especially among those without a college degree (Donald Trump’s victory challenges the global liberal order, 2016). Today, at least in Europe and the United States, it often looks as if globalization has become Public Enemy Number One for both right- and left-wing movements and parties.

During the s and s, the debate about media imperialism erupted in the field of communication studies. A good deal of critique and discussion followed during the next few decades, as academics and policy makers continued to debate the feasibility of the concept. Meanwhile, global media expanded and changed in various ways. Is media imperialism still a viable concept in an increasingly globalized, diverse media system? Or has a new form of cultural imperialism developed? is essay discusses how these concepts have been defined, how they have been challenged and redefined, and their current relevance. Background of the Cultural Imperialism Debate Of course, the story of cultural imperialism is not new and is an inevi- table component of imperialism more generally. Imperialism involves the extension of power or authority over others in the interests of domination and results in the political, military, or economic dominance of one country over another.

Do you know ‘Twas the 18th of April in ‘75’? KOVACH: Hardly a man is now alive that remembers that famous day and year. I grew up in Lexington, Massachusetts. Q: We are talking about the ride of Paul Revere. KOVACH: I am a son of Massachusetts but the first born child of either side of my family born in the United States; and a son of Massachusetts. Q: Today again is 18 April, 2012. This is an interview with Peter Kovach. This is being done on behalf of the Association for Diplomatic Studies and I am Charles Stuart Kennedy. You go by Peter? KOVACH: Peter is fine. Q: Let s start at the beginning. When and where were you born? KOVACH: I was born in Worcester, Massachusetts three days after World War II ended, August the 18th, 1945. Q: Let s talk about on your father s side first. What do you know about the Kovaches? KOVACH: The Kovaches are a typically mixed Hapsburg family; some from Slovakia, some from Hungary, some from Austria, some from Northern Germany and probably some from what is now western Romania. Predominantly Jewish in background though not practice with some Catholic intermarriage and Muslim conversion. Q: Let s take grandfather on the Kovach side. Where did he come from? KOVACH: He was born I think in 1873 or so.

    For Many Scholars the Issues of Propaganda and Deception Have Been Largely Taboo Subjects

    Propaganda, Politics and Deceptioni David Miller and Piers Robinson Abstract For many scholars the issues of propaganda and deception have been largely taboo subjects. There is only fleeting attention to deception from political scientists whilst communication scholars pay minimal attention to the issue of propaganda. And yet we live in an age in which debates about deception and propaganda are prevalent. Recent angst over fake news and foreign propaganda activities have become part of political discourse. In fact, as this chapter shows, questions of deception and lying in politics are perennial and date back to ancient times whilst propaganda remains an integral component of contemporary democracies. Moreover, deception as a political strategy has become pervasive in contemporary liberal democracies because of the range of institutions now involved in the manipulation of information. These institutions include media, academia, think tanks and intelligence services. Furthermore, the emergence of internet-based digital communication creates new opportunities for powerful actors to manipulate beliefs and conduct. These developments raise profound questions with respect to the health of contemporary liberal democracies and, accordingly, the study of propaganda and deception needs to become far more central and mainstream than has been the case to date. Keywords Propaganda, deception, organised persuasive communication, public relations, strategic communication, democracy 1 Overview Popular current debates surrounding ‘fake news’ and propaganda have elevated the perceived importance of the role of deception in politics. Much of the mainstream discussion of these matters has tended to focus on the controversial US president Donald Trump, the prevalence of ‘fake news’ across social and alternative/independent media, and a renewed fixation on the alleged Russian threat to Western interests and its mischievous employment of propaganda as a part of hybrid warfare.
