Guidelines to Making Programmes for BBC World Service

Guidelines to Making Programmes for BBC World Service Titles and Descriptions It’s not just the programmes that need to have a sense of excitement and the ability to create curiosity in our audience and potential audience. Whatever we publish - titles, billings, online descriptions etc (known as ‘metadata’) - have an effect on how your programme performs on the web. Programme titles and descriptions should always be written in a way that encourages the most people to listen to it, makes the programme topic clear, and ensures visibility and findability across the web - in podcast provider spaces (such as Apple Podcasts, Spotify etc.), search engine results (such as Google) and other tech, such as voice-activated systems (such as Alexa). We need to have titles and programme descriptions five weeks before the transmission date. This ensures that both Press and Publicity have time to adequately promote the programme, and that these descriptions are ready in time for our automated systems. It can be difficult to update programme descriptions at some of their publication sites if the information arrives too close to transmission. Titles Indicate immediately what the programme or podcast is about. • Use clear simple language – no puns. Show the value of your content • Be succinct - take out any unnecessary words (use 50 characters max) • Put the words that convey most about the story at the front (apps may cut off the end of the title) • Use search terms so people can discover your content Examples of Good Titles • The Death Row book club • In search of the quarter-life crisis • ADHD and me • Finding the viruses that destroy superbugs • How Christo wrapped the Reichstag 1 Programme Descriptions We need you to provide two descriptions for each programme you deliver.
  • Case Study 2

    Case Study 2

IN DARKNESS Theatrical release: 16th March 2012 Case study We positioned In Darkness as an upmarket, intelligent war drama comparable to The Counterfeiters and The Lives of Others, which had similar high production values and mix of war, thriller and drama aspects. It was also nominated as Best Foreign Language Film for the 2012 Academy Awards and this added critical and to some degree consumer interest. In addition to the Oscar nomination, we identified several key selling points to the film; its basis as a true story, the heroism in times of adversity and the ultimately uplifting story of survival and humanity pulling through, along with the high production values. We considered it vital to the release that the story was not mistakenly believed to be a dark, depressing or grueling experience, which could deter the target market and cross-over audiences. We feel the focus on the positive outcome of the film was the perfect antidote to this and these elements were communicated throughout all aspects of the campaign. We agreed early on that with funding from the BFI we could properly explore a dual campaign with both Polish and English speaking markets with entirely separate creatives in terms of dual language. Primary markets – Arthouse cinema goes and broader market/ Polish audiences living in the UK Secondary markets Jewish market Fans of WW2 true stories Summary on BFI activity The detail of the activity lies ahead in the document but by way of summary these were our findings on the Polish market. We took the approach that we would look at several forms of media for the Polish market and use exit polling to quantify the results.

THE FORMATION OF TEMPORARY COMMUNITIES IN ANIME FANDOM: A STORY OF BOTTOM-UP GLOBALIZATION ____________________________________ A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of California State University, Fullerton ____________________________________ In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in Geography ____________________________________ By Cynthia R. Davis Thesis Committee Approval: Mark Drayse, Department of Geography & the Environment, Chair Jonathan Taylor, Department of Geography & the Environment Zia Salim, Department of Geography & the Environment Summer, 2017 ABSTRACT Japanese animation, commonly referred to as anime, has earned a strong foothold in the American entertainment industry over the last few decades. Anime is known by many to be a more mature option for animation fans since Western animation has typically been sanitized to be “kid-friendly.” This thesis explores how this came to be, by exploring the following questions: (1) What were the differences in the development and perception of the animation industries in Japan and the United States? (2) Why/how did people in the United States take such interest in anime? (3) What is the role of anime conventions within the anime fandom community, both historically and in the present? These questions were answered with a mix of historical research, mapping, and interviews that were conducted in 2015 at Anime Expo, North America’s largest anime convention. This thesis concludes that anime would not have succeeded as it has in the United States without the heavy involvement of domestic animation fans. Fans created networks, clubs, and conventions that allowed for the exchange of information on anime, before Japanese companies started to officially release anime titles for distribution in the United States.

Written Evidence Submitted by the BBC DCMS Select Committee Inquiry Into the Impact of Covid-19 on the DCMS Sectors

Written evidence submitted by the BBC DCMS Select Committee Inquiry into the Impact of Covid-19 on the DCMS Sectors Executive Summary 1. Covid-19 has had a substantial impact on the BBC’s ability to produce programmes and services. Following advice from the WHO, public health organisations and the Government, the BBC closed the production of many programmes and services across its TV and radio output. The cancellation of key broadcasting events, ceasing of productions, and changes to schedules will continue to have an impact on what audiences see and hear across the BBC across the coming months. 2. Like other organisations continuing to operate during this crisis, the BBC has faced operational challenges. We’ve experienced reduced levels of staffing and the huge increase in demand for the BBC’s internal network as over 15,000 colleagues work from home. For those unable to work from home, safety is paramount and we’ve followed Government advice. 3. The BBC Board took the decision to delay changes to the over-75s licence fee from 1 June to 1 August during an unprecedented time. The decision is to be kept under review. 4. In response to Covid-19, the BBC took swift action at the start of the pandemic to repurpose our services and programmes for the benefit of all audiences ensuring we kept the nation informed, educated and entertained. 5. The BBC enhanced our core role to bring trusted news and information to audiences in the UK and around the world in a fast-moving situation, and to counter confusion and misinformation.

Department of Mass Communication, Federal Polythecnic, Offa, Kwara State, Nigeria; * E-mail of the corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract This study examined the impact of global broadcasting on Africa. The survey research method was applied to collect data with the structured questionnaire as the research instrument. 150 respondents who were purposively selected from Nigeria, South Africa and Egypt were administered the questionnaire online through the surveymonkey.com website. However, 110 respondents properly completed and submitted their questionnaires representing 73 percent response rate. Findings revealed that Cable News Network (CNN) is the preferred global TV news channel of 41 percent of the respondents followed by Al Jezeera (32 percent), China Central Television (18 per cent) and BBC World (9 percent). This is consistent with the 2012 European Media Survey (EMS) report which declared CNN as the undisputed No 1 news brand in Africa. Findings further revealed that global TV news channels carried mostly negative stories about Africa as indicated by 86 percent of the respondents. Furthermore, 60 percent of the respondents indicated that this pattern of coverage not only gave the continent a negative perception but worsened her economic woes.
