Scheer 1. Scope of the volume Around the middle of the 5th century BCE the ­Athenian assembly decided that a priestess for ­Athena Nike was to be appointed by lot from all ­Athenian women. One woman, perhaps the first person to hold this office, was called Myrrhine. She had to administer the shrine (naos) and to attend to the cult image (hedos) of ­Athena, as we learn from her epitaph which refers to the duties associated with the priesthood.1 As a result of this selection by lot, every female ­Athenian citizen could suddenly face the challenge of having to hold a prestigious office. How did she know what to do? What religious knowledge and skills were re- quired for such an office? What kind of religious education did the male citizens of the People’s Assembly think they could expect from the Athenian­ women whom they believed were capable of carrying out this job? If we take into consideration the whole Greek-speaking area of the Mediterranean, similar questions arise. How were education and religion related in Greek cities beyond Athens?­­ How can we define their interrelationship and mutual influence? To what extent was religious knowledge accessible across genders and social classes, and how was it conveyed? Scholarship on the Greek and Roman Mediterranean has tended to examine separately the histories of culture, education, knowledge, and religion. Since the seminal works of Marrou and Jaeger,2 that in many respects were a product of their time, studies on educational systems have flourished, especially those trying to re- construct schooling strategies and how technical and subject-specific content was taught, such as grammar, music, and sport, as well as the wider issue of whether * T his research has been supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) as part of the SFB 1136 Bildung und Religion, sub-project C01 “Aufgeklärte Männer – aber- gläubische Frauen? Scheer schools in the modern sense existed at all.3 Insights into the everyday practice in ancient schools have come from the study of papyri and ostraca (inscribed ­potsherds) from Graeco-Roman Egypt.4 Similarly productive has been the field of childhood studies, which has examined ancient children’s upbringing and their role as social actors.5 T he investigation of how literate the wider population was in antiquity has also been an object of research interest, alongside asking on which occasions writing was used and by whom.6 T he heterogeneity of sources and con- texts which have emerged overall is far too diverse to be ascribed to a mono­lithic ‘Greek’ culture and education. Instead, we must take account of the wide variety of experiences which occurred across the Greek-speaking world, without privileging one typology of sources or city over the others. Greek cultures must henceforth be discussed in the plural.7 T hese studies, however, have often left aside the analysis of religious aspects of education. T he absence of this perspective is

Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been acknowledged in the thesis. iii Abstract Ancient Krete perceived itself, and was perceived from outside, as rather different from the rest of Greece, particularly with respect to religion, social structure, and laws. The purpose of the thesis is to explore the bases for these perceptions and their accuracy. Krete’s self-perception is examined in the light of the account of Diodoros Siculus (Book 5, 64-80, allegedly based on Kretan sources), backed up by inscriptions and archaeology, while outside perceptions are derived mainly from other literary sources, including, inter alia, Homer, Strabo, Plato and Aristotle, Herodotos and Polybios; in both cases making reference also to the fragments and testimonia of ancient historians of Krete. While the main cult-epithets of Zeus on Krete – Diktaios, associated with pre-Greek inhabitants of eastern Krete, Idatas, associated with Dorian settlers, and Kretagenes, the symbol of the Hellenistic koinon - are almost unique to the island, those of Apollo are not, but there is good reason to believe that both Delphinios and Pythios originated on Krete, and evidence too that the Eleusinian Mysteries and Orphic and Dionysiac rites had much in common with early Kretan practice. The early institutionalization of pederasty, and the abduction of boys described by Ephoros, are unique to Krete, but the latter is distinct from rites of initiation to manhood, which continued later on Krete than elsewhere, and were associated with different gods.

    Notes on 2 Peter 202 1 Edition Dr. Thomas L. Constable HISTORICAL BACKGROUND This epistle claims that the Apostle Peter wrote it (1:1). It also claims to follow a former letter written by Peter (3:1), which appears to be a reference to 1 Peter, although Peter may have been referring to a letter we no longer have.1 The author's reference to the fact that Jesus had predicted a certain kind of death for him (1:14) ties in with Jesus' statement to Peter recorded in John 21:18. Even so, "most modern scholars do not think that the apostle Peter wrote this letter."2 The earliest external testimony (outside Scripture) to Petrine authorship comes from the third century.3 The writings of the church fathers contain fewer references to the Petrine authorship of 2 Peter than to the authorship of any other New Testament book. It is easy to see why critics who look for reasons to reject the authority of Scripture have targeted this book for attack. Ironically, in this letter, Peter warned his readers of heretics who would depart from the teachings of the apostles and the Old Testament prophets, which became the very thing some of these modern critics do. Not all who reject Petrine authorship are heretics, however. The arguments of some critics have convinced some otherwise conservative scholars who no longer retain belief in the epistle's inspiration. Sources and puzzles In Turkish folkore Nasreddin Hoca is a representative of populär wisdom; his stories are well-known in Greece as well. One of them goes as follows: Nasreddin Hoca had been appointed as a judge in a dispute between two men. After the plaintiff had presented his case, Nasreddin Hoca looked at him and said: 'You are right'. Then it was the defendant's turn to present his argument and, again, Hoca's response was the same: 'You are right'. Thereupon one of the on- lookers at the trial turned to Hoca and said: 'You are the judge; you have to pass a judgment now'. Hoca looked at him calmly and an- swered: 'You are right, too'. Whenever I heard this story as a child, I laughed, but at the same time I was puzzled about its meaning. I still am, but I can not help thinking of this story whenever I read different interpretations of the same Greek festival. Of course, not everyone is right, but there is hardly any study which does not offer a new interesting insight. I also could not help thinking of Hoca's story again, when I read the jacket of the second volume of the Inconsistencies in Greek and Roman Religion. There, Henk Versnel expresses his conviction 'that the three approaches to religion known as "sub- stantivistic", functionalist and cultural-symbolic respectively, need not be mutually exclusive.' If I have chosen such a puzzling festival as the Daidala for this paper in honor of Henk Versnel, it is because I think that it pre- sents an interesting case of a ritual, in the study of which different interpretative approaches are not mutually exclusive or contradic- tory, but complementary.

    Bacchylides 17: Singing and Usurping the Paean Maria Pavlou ACCHYLIDES 17, a Cean commission performed on Delos, has been the subject of extensive study and is Bmuch admired for its narrative artistry, elegance, and excellence. The ode was classified as a dithyramb by the Alex- andrians, but the Du-Stil address to Apollo in the closing lines renders this classification problematic and has rather baffled scholars. The solution to the thorny issue of the ode’s generic taxonomy is not yet conclusive, and the dilemma paean/ dithyramb is still alive.1 In fact, scholars now are more inclined to place the poem somewhere in the middle, on the premise that in antiquity the boundaries between dithyramb and paean were not so clear-cut as we tend to believe.2 Even though I am 1 Paean: R.
