The 31st HKTDC Hong Kong Book Fair, organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), will be held from 15 to 21 July (Wednesday to Tuesday) 2020 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC).

At the English and Foreign Reading Series, readers are encouraged to broaden their horizons through different languages. This year, we are honoured to invite English writers to share their insights and are delighted to invite you to attend their sharing sessions.

Peter Gordon Juan José Morales Speaker Profile: Peter Gordon and Juan José Morales are co-authors of The Silver Way: China, Spanish America and the Birth of Globalisation, 1565–1815 (Penguin 2017).

Peter Gordon is editor of the Asian Review of and has been active in Hong Kong book and literary circles for 20 years. He has been named a “Knight of the Order of the Star of Italy”. Juan José Morales is an entrepreneur and historian. A former President of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, he has served on the board of several cultural societies, including The Oriental Ceramics Society of Hong Kong and Musica Viva.

Abstract Among the thousands of centuries-old books in Rome’s famed Biblioteca Casanatense is an album of 76 striking watercolours. Painted by an Indian painter around 1540 in Goa for an unknown Portuguese patron, the Códice Casanatense contains illustrations of daily scenes, professions and religious ceremonies, as well as the peoples of what is now known as the Maritime Silk Road. Topic: Painter and Patron: Illustrations of the Painter & Patron is the first English-language book Maritime Silk Road in 16th century Códice dedicated to this remarkable and unique document. Dr. Gillian Bickley Speaker Profile: Dr. Gillian Bickley was born in the UK and has lived and worked mainly in Hong Kong since 1970. Her books aim to create a record of Hong Kong and those who have lived in Hong Kong, both in C19th and the present day. They include works which take many years to research and write, such as, Journeys with a Mission, an of the travel journals of the first Anglican Bishop of Victoria (Hong Kong), the Right Revd George Smith—St Paul’s College, Diocesan Girls’ School, and Diocesan Boys’ School owe their origins to the Bishop and his wife—and short poems. Her most recent book of poetry, Over the Years, collects a selection (made by her husband, Dr. Verner Bickley, MBE) from her previous five collections, For the Record and other poems of Hong Kong, Moving House, Sightings, China Suite, and Perceptions. Her biography of the founder of Hong Kong Government Education, and first headmaster of what is now Queen’s College, The Golden Needle: the biography of Frederick Stewart (1836-1889), is regarded as definitive. Gillian’s talks are often accompanied by by her husband.

Abstract: This illustrated talk begins with two brief examples of the speaker’s poems about Hong Kong people and the Hong Kong record.

She will then devote most of the time to give a personal view of The Right Revd George Smith (1815-71), the pioneering first Anglican Bishop of Victoria (Hong Kong), and his wife -- he “a tall, thin pale- looking man” and she “most amiable,” “a perfect lady”, relying on the bishop’s own record and the speaker’s modern edition of his writings.

You will hear some of the experiences and events the bishop encountered during missionary travels mainly in China during a period of turmoil, and in India just a few years ahead of the Indian Mutiny, with brief readings from the recent book. An independent- minded, highly-educated, dedicated, and enthusiastic person, Bishop Smith had many wide-ranging connections and, in his travel journals, Topic: “Keeping the Record”: provides first-hand information including about China’s internal, Journeys with a Mission and Over the consular and diplomatic events. Years Questions from the audience will be welcomed at the end of the talk. Mark O’Neill Speaker Profile: A resident of Hong Kong, Mark O’Neill has written 12 books on Chinese and Hong Kong history and society. Seven of them have editions in Chinese and English.

Abstract: This year’s book describes the extraordinary life of Faina Vakhreva, wife of Chiang Ching-kuo, son of Chiang Kai-shek. A factory worker in the Soviet Union from a modest family, she had to adapt to life in China’s First Family: learn Mandarin: and how to be a good Chinese wife and mother. With her family, she lived through the devastation of the Sino-Japanese war, the civil war and then the move to Taiwan.

It is an inspiring story of love, heroism and determination to overcome great difficulties.
