Structured around the thesis that Muslims resisted the genocide better than Christians, it explores the historical, cultural, political and theological causes that motivated and explain the actions of both faith communities in the face of genocide. The first chapter offers a critique of the dominant colonial perspective from which the topic of religion and genocide has been studied so far. It presents pre-colonial Rwandans as evolving in a complex spiritual universe, Gakondo, where religion, morality and politics were closely linked. The rise of a centralised state and sacred monarchy resulted in the theological marginalisation of the Rwandan divinity Imana and the deformation of the political conscience of the Rwanda subject. The second and the third chapter deal respectively

    The Alexandrian II, no. 1 (2013) Accepting the End of my Existence: Why the Tutsis Did Not Respond More Forcefully during the Rwandan Genocide Theo M. Moore On April 6, 1994, in Rwanda, one of the most horrific events in human history took place, known as the Rwandan Genocide. This act of violence was planned and carried out by Hutu extremist with an objective to exterminate all Tutsis. The Hutu motives behind this act of violence dates back to the nineteenth century when the Tutsis ruled over Rwanda. Under Tutsi rule, the Hutu claimed to have been mistreated by the Tutsi. The conflict between the two ethnic groups would escalate when Europeans began colonizing countries in Africa. In 1916, under Belgium occupation of Rwanda, the Belgians supported the Tutsis until they began pursuing an attempt to become independent. In result, the Belgians began supporting the Hutu to assist them in overthrowing Tutsi rule. In the early 1960s, The Hutus came to power and used drastic measures to sustain their power. Throughout the Hutu reign, they displayed ominous signs of a possible genocide against the Tutsi. However, the Tutsi gave a minimum effort of resistance toward the Hutus. This paper questions why there was a limited effort of response from the Tutsi in the Rwandan Genocide in 1994.The goal is to answer the question with evidence to support reasons why the Tutsis did not respond effectively. Genocide is an effort to directly kill a group of people or indirectly by creating conditions such as starvation and rape.1 The majority of genocides consist of destroying national, ethnic, or religious groups.

A growing body of feminist scholarship argues that GBV in conflict zones results mainly from a continuum of patriarchal violence that is condoned outside the context of war in everyday life. This literature, however, fails to account for colonial and racial histories that also inform the politics of GBV in African conflicts. My project examines the question of the colonial genealogy of GBV by grounding my inquiry within postcolonial, transnational and intersectional feminist frameworks that center race, historicize violence, and decolonize knowledge production. I employ interdisciplinary methods that include (1) discourse analysis of the gender-based violence of Belgian rule and Tutsi women’s iconography in colonial texts; (2) ii textual analysis of the constructions of Tutsi women’s sexuality and fertility in key official documents on overpopulation and Tutsi refugees in colonial and post-independence Rwanda; and (3) an ethnographic study that included leading anti gendered violence activists based in Kigali, Rwanda, to assess how African feminists account for the colonial legacy of gendered violence in the 1994 genocide.

Noriega, Chair There is little doubt of the fundamental impact of the 1994 Rwanda genocide on the country's social structure and cultural production, but the form that these changes have taken remains ignored by contemporary media scholars. Since this time, the need to identify the the particular industrial structure, political economy, and discursive slant of Rwandan “post- genocidal” media has become vital. The Rwandan government has gone to great lengths to construct and promote reconciliatory discourse to maintain order over a country divided along ethnic lines. Such a task, though, relies on far more than the simple state control of media message systems (particularly in the current period of media deregulation). Instead, it requires a more complex engagement with issues of self-censorship, speech law, public/private industrial regulation, national/transnational production/consumption paradigms, and post-traumatic media theory. This project examines the interrelationships between radio, television, newspapers, the ii Internet, and film in the contemporary Rwandan mediascape (which all merge through their relationships with governmental, regulatory, and funding agencies, such as the Rwanda Media High Council - RMHC) to investigate how they endorse national reconciliatory discourse.

In the last edition of The Chalice, I wrote about meditating on the Sorrowful Mysteries while praying The Rosary of the Seven Sorrows recalls the sorrows the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, and how this prayer and the Virgin Mother of God endured during Her life, meditation is an effective means of coming to know particularly Her compassion for the suffering and the burning love Jesus has for us in His Heart.

    GERARD Van ’t Spijker Religion and the Rwandan Genocide Within a period of three months in 1994, between 800,000 and 1,000,000 people were killed (men, women, children and elderly people) in the Af­ rican country of Rwanda. Rwandan nationals were killed by Rwandan na­ tionals. In many cases the machete, one of the most ordinary instruments of every household, was used as a weapon. Sometimes, people who had sought refuge in an overcrowded school or church were slaughtered by grenades thrown by militias. Most of the victims belonged to the Tutsi mi­ nority, who, it is estimated, represented 15 per cent of the population. The perpetrators were Hutu, the segment of the population that is estimated to have represented more than 80 per cent of the population. Among the very tiny minority of the Twa, there were both victims and perpetrators. During the period of the genocide, four out of five members of the popu lation were members of a Christian church.1 The role of religion in this brutal killing can be treated from different angles (van ’t Spijker 1997). In the years of political change and tensions preceding the genocide, many leaders of the most important churches had developed systematic and skilful initiatives for mediating between the different political parties and powers, in many cases not without success. Christian laymen have been very active in human rights organizations, challenging political leaders, and organizing marches for peace at the beginning of 1994 supported by thousands of participants in the most important cities (Gatwa 2005: 181– 218).

    TOGO Executive Summary The constitution and other laws and policies protect religious freedom and, in practice, the government generally respected religious freedom. The government did not demonstrate a trend toward either improvement or deterioration in respect for and protection of the right to religious freedom. There were no reports of societal abuses or discrimination based on religious affiliation, belief, or practice. The U.S. government discusses religious freedom with the government as part of its overall policy to promote human rights. The country faces significant challenges regarding economic and democratic reforms. As a result, the majority of the U.S. embassy’s programming reflects these key goals. Section I. Religious Demography In 2004, the Demographic Research Unit of the University of Lome estimated the population is 33 percent traditional animist, 28 percent Roman Catholic, 14 percent Sunni Muslim, 10 percent Protestant, and 10 percent other Christian denominations. The remaining 5 percent includes persons not affiliated with any religious group. Many converts to Christianity or Islam continue to perform rituals that originated with indigenous religious groups. Most Muslims live in the central and northern regions. Catholics, Protestants, and other Christians live mainly in the southern part of the country. Section II. Status of Government Respect for Religious Freedom Legal/Policy Framework The constitution and other laws and policies protect religious freedom. The government recognizes Catholicism, Protestantism, and Islam as state religions. The government requires other religious groups to register as associations.     This is the testimony of Valentina, a survivor of the Rwandan genocide My name is Valentina. I am 19 years old. My parents, both secondary school teachers, were killed in the genocide. Only my elder sister, Ariane, three brothers and I survived. Until 1991 we lived in Burundi as refugees, but my parents decided to return to Rwanda, believing that there was peace. I was still a baby at the time, but I learnt from my elder sister that my father was imprisoned soon after. Following his release, he was appointed a teacher at the Roman Catholic Secondary School in Kabgayi. My mother also taught at the same school. In 1994, when the killings began we fled to the Roman Catholic Church in Kabgayi. The priests requested that the men be separated from the women. The boys too were separated from us. First the men were killed, and then the boys. My mother and I managed to escape the killing, and together we hid. I was only 5 years old. But Ariane had become separated from us. My grandfather joined us at Kabyayi. He arrived in a terrible state, his head and face covered in blood. He had severe injuries to his head, and part of his brain was exposed where his skull had fractured. He died 3 days later, a slow, painful death. I was with him. When he died, my mother buried him.
