2 Study Goals

Lorton is being used as a case study because it is a successful example of development around a VRE Station. This study hopes to take observations from Lorton, and see how they could potentially be applied to the newer Spotsylvania Station.

Questions to be Answered

- Where do Lorton riders come from?

- Who goes to Lorton?

- What can Spotsylvania learn from Lorton?

- What can this mean for VRE?

Closer, Denser Development Spotsylvania already has development present, however it could be denser and significantly closer to the station.

Infrastructure Improvement FAMPO is currently working with FRED Bus to extend shuttles to the Spotsylvania Station. Road access could be improved, as there is currently only one road with access to the station.

Obtain Backing If the county is happy with the development they are seeing so far, they can acquire backing from the citizens and media for continued development

Placemaking/Identity Spotsylvania County has a lot of history behind it and prides itself on being the “Crossroads of the Civil War.” Future development needs to consider this.

31 What Have I Taken From This?

This has been my first real planning internship and it has been both a pleasure and a learning experience for me.

I have taken away new techniques, and ideas to employ both in my future career as well as when I return to school.

I have seen interactions between multiple different organizations in a unique setting (MWCOG, FAMPO).

I’ve made connections which will surely help in my future endeavors, and learned a significant amount about the area in which I plan to live and work once I graduate.

Thank-You all for this great opportunity and thank-you for your attention.
