14 OPPORTUNITIES

• Over half of the riders traveled fewer than 5 miles from their homes to a VRE station1, improvements in a ½ mile (walking) or 3 mile (bicycling) radius from the stations would impact many riders. • 0.5% of the riders access an origin station along the Fredericksburg line using bicycles2 and there is opportunity to increase that share by providing infrastructure and low-stress environments. • Operational integration between feeder buses and VRE trains could contribute to mode shift and new riders. Lorton is served by several bus routes that carry 2% of the riders boarding at the station; while FRED operates 2 bus shuttle routes with fewer trips and transport 4% of the station’s riders. • Promoting carpooling and kiss-and-ride could reduce the number of parked cars.

35 Observations from Lorton

- Just because you build it, does not mean they will come

- Controlled location and typology of development

- Transportation Demand Management Programs

- Plan for Transit - Lorton has four bus routes that connect to the VRE station - Two Express in during peak hours - Connects Lorton to Franconia - Connects Lorton to Tyson’s and Metro

36 What Could Spotsylvania Do?

Closer, Denser Development Spotsylvania already has development present, however it could be denser and significantly closer to the station.

Infrastructure Improvement FAMPO is currently working with FRED Bus to extend shuttles to the Spotsylvania Station. Road access could be improved, as there is currently only one road with access to the station.

Obtain Backing If the county is happy with the development they are seeing so far, they can acquire backing from the citizens and media for continued development

Placemaking/Identity Spotsylvania County has a lot of history behind it and prides itself on being the “Crossroads of the Civil War.” Future development needs to consider this.
