Arctic Traces The Journal of Northern Studies is a peer-reviewed academic publication issued twice a year. The journal has a specific focus on human activities in northern spaces, and articles concentrate on people as cultural beings, people in society and the interaction between people and the northern environment. In many cases, the contributions represent exciting interdisciplinary and multidis- ciplinary approaches. Apart from scholarly artic- les, the journal contains a review section, and a section with reports and information on issues relevant for Northern Studies. The journal is published by Umeå University and Sweden’s northernmost Royal Academy, the Royal Skyttean Society. In many cases the situation is acute for both humans and other an- imals. But it is not only biotopes, but also long-since intertwined systems of nature and culture that are in accelerating processes of change. What was once portrayed as almost invincible is now associated with vulnerability. The situation is one of urgency for the four million people living in Arctic areas, but it may ultimately affect many more. The northernmost area on earth once again reminds us that humanity too has a limit. This introduction starts with a fieldwork note from contemporary Greenland, where the con- tested colonial heritage also exemplifies the entanglement and friction of global inter- ests and environmental change. In this broadly multidisciplinary collection of scholarly articles the Arctic will be discussed both as nature and as culture, and in ways that stress change and complexity. Unexpected alliances and tentacular methods are crucial in our challenging times, according to environmentalist Donna Haraway. The contributions of this journal issue also share the context of support for a co-curated exhibition at the Nordiska museet on “The Arctic—While the Ice Is Melting” (from 2019). The Weaving of a Multidisciplinary Web The atmosphere in Nuuk was marked by the presence in the harbour of a luxury cruiser.1 Already at the airport I had run into mineralogists and other scientists from different parts of Europe, and now a Russian icebreaker had also cleared the way for a large group of well-off tourists. Some of the visitors ventured to bathe in the cold water while others tried out a kind of hang-gliding in pairs, and could be seen hovering in the high, clear air. They seemed to be moving in a fantasy landscape of adventure and play. Open Access: Gothic Nature is a peer-reviewed open access journal. www.gothicnaturejournal.com ‘Don’t be a Zombie’: Deep Ecology and Zombie Misanthropy Kevin Corstorphine ABSTRACT This article examines the ways in which the Gothic imagination has been used to convey the message of environmentalism, looking specifically at attempts to curb population growth, such as the video ‘Zombie Overpopulation’, produced by Population Matters, and the history of such thought, from Thomas Malthus onwards. Through an analysis of horror fiction, including the writing of the notoriously misanthropic H. P. Lovecraft, it questions if it is possible to develop an aesthetics and attitude of environmental conservation that does not have to resort to a Gothic vision of fear and loathing of humankind. It draws on the ideas of Timothy Morton, particularly Dark Ecology (2016), to contend with the very real possibility of falling into nihilism and hopelessness in the face of the destruction of the natural world, and the liability of the human race, despite individual efforts towards co-existence.

Indledning For at sikre Grønlands synlighed og interesser internationalt, er det vigtigt at vores land er en aktiv aktør i den internationale politik. Det er derfor vigtigt med en nødvendig repræsentation i vores primære samarbejdslande, samt videre vigtigt at deltage og markere sig i internationale møder og konferencer. Jeg havde således fornøjelsen, sammen med Udenrigsminister Anders Samuelsen, den 22. og 23. maj 2018, at markere 10 året for vedtagelsen af Ilulissat erklæringen, en absolut skelsættende begivenhed for vores land og Arktisk og en erklæring som har været med til at sikre fred og stabilitet i den arktiske region. Foruden værterne deltog repræsentanter fra USA, Canada, Rusland, Finland, Sverige, Norge, Island og Færøerne samt repræsentanter for ICC og Samerådet. Alle medlemslandene fra Arktisk Råd, samt de 6 oprindelige folks organisationer repræsenteret i Arktisk Råd, var således inviteret til markeringen, således en større kreds, end de 5 arktiske kyststater, der vedtog erklæringen tilbage i 2008. Denne udvidelse af kredsen blev gennemført med henblik på større medinddragelse af de aktører, som implementerer principperne i erklæringen. På ministermødet blev vigtigheden af at fokusere på den arktiske befolkning fremhævet. Vores mest fremtrædende opgave i Arktisk er at vi som folk er med til at lede dialogen om, og udviklingen af, vores region. Den grønlandske repræsentation i Reykjavik er nu under etablering, og forventes endelig officielt åbnet i 4. kvartal af 2018. Repræsentationen forventes at bidrage til at vedligeholde og udvide de eksisterende samarbejder med Island, samt styrke de politiske og handelsmæssige forbindelser.

    CDSG Special Tour to Sweden’s Defenses August 25th to September 3rd, 2021 – Four Months Out One of Three Adjoining Tours Terry McGovern The CDSG and FSG have organized special overlapping tours to Sweden’s defenses in 2021 (subject to developments with the COVID-19 pandemic). This is due to each group’s different focus, mode of transport/lodging, and duration of tour. By providing these tour options, we hope to better serve each of our member’s needs. These tours are being organized by Sweden’s leading fortification tour expert, Lars Hasson, and his tour company, Bunker Tours. He has designed a 9-day tour to the “best” of Sweden’s modern defenses for the CDSG which would take us across the breath of Sweden. He is also organized an 8-day tour for the FSG that would overlap with the CDSG tour so our two groups would travel together for 4 days. You could attend just the FSG tour or just the CDSG tour or both tours for a total of 13 days. Lars has also organized a 2-day “pre-tour” for those who want to see the Cold War defenses around Copenhagen. If you joined all three tours you would have 15 days of both Swedish and Danish fortifications and artillery. The CDSG’s 9-day tour is planned to start and end at Stockholm’s International Airport. You would need to book and pay for your own flights. The round-trip fare from Washington, DC, recently was $1,033 via Iceland. We would use shared rental cars as the size of the tour group would be limited to around 20 members.

Men’s and women’s social roles were not wholly determined by their bodies, there were mediatory roles between masculine and feminine identities, and role-swapping was—and continues to be—widespread. However, archaeologists have largely neglected Inuit gender diversity as an area of research. This thesis has two primary objectives: 1) to explore the potential impacts of presenting queer narratives of the Inuit past through a series of interviews that were conducted with Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer/Questioning and Two-Spirit (LGBTQ2S+) Inuit and 2) to consider ways in which archaeological materials articulate with and convey a multiplicity of gender expressions specific to pre-contact Inuit identity. This work encourages archaeologists to look beyond categories that have been constructed and naturalized within white settler spheres, and to replace them with ontologically appropriate histories that incorporate a range of Inuit voices.
