În ultimii 15 ani, oferta de dicþionare, lexicoane ºi enciclopedii necesare studiilor feministe ºi problematicii de gen a fost destul de consistentã, mai ales în cultura americanã ºi în cea britanicã, þãri care, alãturi de cele scandinave, de Canada ºi de Australia, au deja o tradiþie în studiile de gen ºi în teoria feministã. Acest fel de lucrãri nu este strãin nici spaþiului continental european. În aceste condiþii pare de bun-simþ posibila întrebare : de ce nu am tradus un dicþionar, o enciclopedie sau un lexicon deja recunoscute academic în oferta internaþionalã, lucrãri produse în spaþii culturale care au o tradiþie în studiile feministe ºi în cele de gen ºi am preferat sã începem cu o ofertã româneascã ? Mãrturisim cã ºi noi ne-am gândit la alternativa traducerii. Apoi tot noi ne-am rãzgândit. De bunã seamã, orice astfel de lucrare tradusã nu ar fi fãcut nici cea mai vagã referire nici la feministele românce (teore- ticiene sau activiste), nici la contribuþia lor la istoria politicã sau la cea culturalã, nici la bãrbaþii feminiºti, nici la problemele de gen ale socie- tãþii româneºti, nici la legislaþia româneascã. Pentru un public mai puþin avizat era o reconfirmare a unei prejudecãþi : feminismul, ca ºi studiile de gen sunt marfã de import, exotisme intelectuale occidentale. ªi lexiconul nostru continuã tradiþia unei nedreptãþi : existã feminism occidental ºi feminism românesc. În rest, imaginea este aceea a unui deºert. Recunoaºtem cu amãrãciune în primul rând aceastã limitã. Nici mãcar dezvoltãrile feministe din estul Europei nu îºi gãsesc locul în lexiconul nostru. Existã ºi alte dezechilibre : lexiconul cuprinde ºi o cronologie a miºcãrii feministe româneºti, dar nu ºi una universalã, prezintã evoluþiile studiilor de gen în România, dar nu ºi în lume. Tot ce am reuºit a fost sã adãugãm contribuþiile româneºti ºi problematica de interes local. Cu alte cuvinte, am repetat o istorie, aceea a marginalizãrii ºi excluderii a ceea ce este nonoccidental ºi nonromânesc. Suntem perfect conºtiente de acest reducþionism regretabil. Estul rãmâne încã, ºi pentru estici, marginal, anonim, parafrazând un misogin, rãmâne feminin. Dincolo de toate aceste limite, cercetarea feministã, ca ºi studiile de gen au avansat în România ultimului deceniu. Expertiza creºte în diferite domenii, mai ales în ºtiinþele sociale ºi politice, pe coordonata acestui tip PREFAÞà 67 PREFAÞà de studii. Credem cã am atins nivelul de dezvoltare necesar ca sã putem spune cã existã premisele unei ºcoli româneºti de studii de gen. The Beginning of Women’s Emancipation Movement in Transylvania and in other Romanian Territories in the Nineteenth Century – Preconditions for Equal Opportunities in Romanian Academic Space is a study that deals with the beginning of Women’s Emancipation Movement in Transylvania and in other Romanian territories in the Nineteenth Century and with its crucial impact on the Feminist Movement in Romania’s history. This study also underlines the idea that this movement represents one of the major preconditions for equal opportunities in nowadays Romanian academic space. There were numerous female personalities that coordinated the struggle for recognition and acquisition of women rights, at that time, such as: Ana Ipătescu, Maria Rosetti, Elena Cuza, Pelaghia Roşu, Sevastiţa Bălcescu, Zoe Golescu, Elena Ghica (Dora d’Istria), Sofia Cocea Chrisoscoleu, Constanţa Dunca Schiau, Maria Flechtenmacher, Adela Xenopol, Ella Negruzzi, Sofia Nădejde, Eugenia de Reuss Ianculescu, Nelly Cornea etc. They founded and coordinated various publications, associations and societies in order to awake from lethargy and activate a great mass of women, in urban areas. Through their studies, speeches, diplomatic actions and activities, they have succeeded in convincing a great number of women about the importance of their social movement. They tried to define, establish and defend equal social, economic and political rights for women in Transylvania and in The Romanian Principalities.

    WORKSHOP Women’s Writing and the East-West Connections within Europe: Visualizing the Channels Spiru Haret University, Bucharest 25-28 April 2012 The workshop Women’s Writing and the East-West Connections within Europe: Visualizing the Channels took place on 25-28 April 2012, in Bucharest, at Spiru Haret University, organized by the Central Research Institute. As was announced in the Call for Papers, the workshop aimed at “reflecting on what kind of factors (Increasing travelling possibilities? Need for money? Increasing education? Feminism? Political developments? Growing curiosity?) were at stake when women put themselves to writing, publishing and entering into contact with readers.” On the technological level, the concept of Visualizing covered the terms of “maps, trees, graphs” (cf. Moretti) in showing influences going from West to East and vice versa, making visible proportions and percentages and illustrating influences exerted by a work, an author, a group of authors. Being a member of Group 4 within the COST project, Ramona Mihaila tried to disseminate information concerning the workshop in Bucharest and she sent invitations to Romanian institutions of higher education, to the Romanian Academy, to other foreign institutions and she promoted the event with posters (see poster), flyers, announcements in print media (see www.opinianationala.ro ), a radio clip (H2.FM), a video clip broadcasted on national TV channels (Etalon TV) and the university channel (see http://centralresearchinstitute.weebly.com/evenimente-iccs.html ). The workshop also had media partners, the television channels H2O, Etalon TV that recorded the presentations delivered by the participants and interviewed professor Suzan van Dijk, the director of the COST project, and associate professor Ramona Mihaila, the organizer, (see the interview: http://centralresearchinstitute.weebly.com/evenimente-iccs.html ) The workshop was organized into seven sessions dedicated only to the members of the project, two workshops focused on database tools, and a keynote presentation.

    REPRESENTING GENDER IN COMMUNIST AND POSTCOMMUNIST ROMANIA Roxana-Elisabeta MARINESCU The Bucharest University of Economic Studies [email protected] Abstract: This article examines various representations of gender in communist and postcommunist Romania, with a focus on how women and men were both led towards and sometimes forced into gender roles better suited to the state policies of the respective contexts rather than to their own interests. Over the years, the state and/or party(ies) public agenda, from women’s liberation through gender equality to equal opportunities, has met real Romanian women’s and men’s needs to different extents and with variable success. Keywords: Gender roles, representation, power discourse, private and public spheres, equal opportunities 1. Introduction Political theories regarding equal rights of men and women, as transposed in practice in communist and postcommunist Romania, enforced specific gender roles and created certain types of representations in the public consciousness, which did not necessarily follow the natural development of society. Obviously, the communist imposition of gender equality policies via the workers party (later on to become the communist party) came on a general trend in the Eastern bloc, which claimed equal rights for women as part of a propagandistic agenda to denounce the preceding so-called bourgeois oppression of women, as well as the oppression supposedly conducted in Western societies at the time. 27 Diversité et Identité Culturelle en Europe This came on the seeds planted in the period between the world wars by Romanian feminists1, fighting for women’s rights within a larger European movement. Their fight culminated with obtaining the right to vote for Romanian women in 1938, but, as two dictatorial regimes followed, this recognition of women as citizens in the public sphere did not mean much up until 1990.

    WOMEN IN BSR-ROMANIA Short History of Romanian territories and Romania All throughout its history, Romania has been a frontier country. Crossed by the Carpathians, bordered to the South by the Danube and to the East by the Black Sea, Romania is situated at a crossroads of Balkans, Eastern Europe, and Central Europe. Created in 1859 by the union of the principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia, the country grew gradually depending of geopolitical evolutions. Medieval Moldavia, founded in 1359, spread east of the Carpathians up to the Dniester River. At the time, its Northern neighbours were Poland, the Lithuanian state – followed by the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth – and, later still, Russia. To the south was Wallachia and, farther still, beyond the Danube, the Ottoman Empire. To the west laid Hungary and later still the principality of Transylvania. To the East, Moldavia welcomed different neighbours: Tatars, Poland, Russia etc. In the second half of the 15th century, Moldavia had to accept the Ottoman domination. Wallachia was founded a few years before Moldavia, in the early 14th century. It had to accept the Ottoman domination earlier than Moldavia due to its proximity to the Ottoman Empire lying south of the Danube. Romanian principalities’ were integrated in the Ottoman system1, all the attempts made by Moldavian/Wallachian rulers to escape Ottoman domination failed until the end of the 19th century. The union of the two principalities in 1859 was symbolically prepared during the revolution of 1848 and accomplished thanks to a subterfuge. Following the Crimean war (1856), the great powers of the time (namely France, United Kingdom, and Russia) agreed to allow a limited union of the Romanian principalities.

    Interwar Romania. Empowering Women in Terms of Socio-political and Cultural Life Cristina Sircuţa PhD candidate in History, University of the West, Timişoara Abstract : In the present study I intended to articulate an analysis of the interwar political emancipation movement of the Romanian women. Although the feminist movement was propagated by its followers as a reflex of society progress, and many European countries imposed the universal suffrage after the First World War, interwar Romanian society was casting down the feminine emancipation behavior since it was not congruent with Romanian’s society cultural patterns. After the women’s admission at the high school graduation exams, their subordination to men could no longer be sustained with strong argumentation, but preserving women in an inferiority state continued to be sustained by many political, cultural and intellectual personalities. Keywords: interwar Romania, womanʼs emancipation, feminist movement, discrimination, civil rights. Introduction "When I think about the recent field of the gender history in Eastern Europe, the following metaphor comes to my mind: the gender historiography as an archipelago of individual efforts, often with no connection between them and immature, that erupts periodically, as like many volcanic islands related to the institutional areas of power from the academic environment through rafts rather than thorough solid bridges." (Bucur 2008: 1375) The history of women in interwar Romania is little known to Romanian and universal historiography. In fact, the situation of women has been treated reductively by tangential references to the moment of obtaining the right to vote.
