Appendix: How to Use the Claretian Year HOW TO UTILIZE THE CLARETIAN YEAR

PERSONALLY

1. The Claretian Year is a spiritual itinerary that is integrated into the liturgical itinerary of the Church. Every day of the year, it proposes to us the life of the Founder and of some Claretians who have lived the missionary vocation faithfully throughout the history of the Congregation. It also presents Claret’s Autobiography and the Constitutions as charismatic sources that renew our missionary spirit. It is a path that is to be followed step by step, with joy, simplicity and perseverance.

2. The Claretian Year is not a historical or informative book, but a means for prayer, meditation and commitment. Start each day asking the Lord to grant you the gift of welcoming his grace. You can do it with the prayer “Renew, Lord, in our Congregation the spirit that animated Anthony Mary Claret” or another that you can compose and write on a picture inserted in the book. Only the Spirit of God can transform us in depth like we cannot even imagine.

3. The first three sections (Claret’s itinerary, history of the Congregation and biographical silhouettes) constitute a kind of narrative theology. Ask yourself what God wants to tell you through the lives and events that appear in them. Give thanks for all the missionaries who have preceded us.

4. The texts of the odd pages - taken from the Autobiography, the Constitutions or some General Chapters - delineate the profile of what we are called to be as Claretian missionaries. Try to read and meditate on them with an attitude of humility and docility, like someone who is surprised again by the Lord, although they are well-known texts. 5. In the section For personal reflection you will find some questions or exercises that can help you to connect the previous texts with your personal situation. It is advisable to have a notebook to do the exercises in writing, so that writing them helps you to be aware of what you live and express it briefly. The notebook will become your “on-board diary” throughout the year.

6. Do not forget to end the daily moment with thanksgiving to God and to the Heart of Mary. At the beginning of each month you will find a prayer that can help you. If it seems appropriate, you can also formulate a simple intention for the day in line with what you have meditated. In this way, almost without realizing it, you will progress in your missionary life.

IN COMMUNITY

1. The daily prayer and monthly recollection day and meeting are the most opportune moments to make use of the Claretian Year in community. In the case of especially important persons, you can read their biographical note at some point in the morning or afternoon prayer.

2. Some of the exercises proposed in the section For personal reflection can be the starting point for a community dialogue on the recollection day. Other more extensive proposals can be found on the website.

3. It is recommended that once a year the members of the community share how they are living the spiritual itinerary of the Claretian Year to encourage each other. If the community is very large, it can be done in pairs or in small groups.
