  • Henriette Roland Horst, Jacques Engels and the Influence of Class
‘More freedom’ or ‘more harmony’? Henriette Roland Holst, Jacques Engels and the influence of class and gender on socialists’ sexual attitudes Paper submitted to the seminar on “Labour organizations and sexuality”, Université de Bourgogne, Dijon 5 October 2001 Peter Drucker1 Sheila Rowbotham once wrote, ‘A radical critical history ... requires a continuing movement between conscious criticism and evidence, a living relationship between questions coming from a radical political movement and the discovery of aspects of the past which would have been ignored within the dominant framework.’2 Her words may apply with particular force to the history of labour organizations and sexuality. Historians can find it easier to find criticisms and questions to raise about the past than to sustain the ‘continuing movement’ required to understand the past in its own terms. The temptation is great to compare positions on sexuality taken in labour organizations in the past with positions held by historians in the present. The result can be either an idealization of sex-radical forbears or a condemnation of those whose ideas fell short of twenty-first-century enlightenment — in either case a curiously old-fashioned sort of history, which benefits little from the advances made by social historians outside ‘the dominant framework’, particularly social historians of sexuality, since the 1970s. Analyzing positions on sexuality taken in labour organizations in the past in the light of knowledge that has been accumulating about social and sexual patterns of their specific periods seems likely to be a more fruitful approach. Four different angles of attack seem particularly likely to be useful.

How Dutch Security Services Perceived Communism (1918-1989) ∗ Constant Willem Hijzen Abstract: »Der ewige Gegner. Die Wahrnehmung des Kommunismus durch den Niederländischen Geheimdienst (1918-1989)«. For more than eighty years, Dutch security services perceived communism as the ultimate threat to nation- al security. From its inception, the anticommunist threat perceptions contained references to foreign, possible, potential, and ideological elements of the com- munist threat. This put the activities of Dutch communists in a different light. Although for a long time there were well-grounded reasons to do so, we find that there were periods when the actual threatening character of Dutch com- munism decreased. However, the security services did not decrease their sur- veillance activities vis-à-vis this ‘red menace’.

Waanders, Zwolle 1998 Zie voor verantwoording: http://www.dbnl.org/tekst/_van012199701_01/colofon.php © 2012 dbnl / Rijksmuseum Vincent Van Gogh 7 Director's foreword This is an exciting period for the Van Gogh Museum. At the time of publication, the museum is building a new wing for temporary exhibitions and is engaged in a project to renovate its existing building. After eight months, during which the museum will be completely closed to the public (from 1 September 1998), the new wing and the renovation are to be completed and ready for opening in May 1999. The original museum building, designed by Gerrit Rietveld and his partners, requires extensive refurbishment. Numerous improvements will be made to the fabric of the building and the worn-out installations for climate control will be replaced. A whole range of facilities will be up-graded so that the museum can offer a better service to its growing numbers of visitors. Plans have been laid for housing the collection during the period of closure, and thanks to the co-operation of our neighbours in the Rijksmuseum, visitors to Amsterdam will not be deprived of seeing a great display of works by Van Gogh. A representative selection from the collection will be on show in the South Wing of the Rijksmuseum from mid-September 1998 until early April 1999. In addition, a group of works will be lent to the Rijksmuseum Twenthe in Enschede. We have also taken this opportunity to lend an important exhibition to the United States.

  • “I Have No Qualms About ... Having Shown Soviet Russia Just Like It Is”: Aleksandr Lozovskii’S 1920 Reports About Travels with Foreign Delegates
The International Newsletter of Communist Studies XXIV/XXV (2018/19), nos. 31-32 85 Gleb J. Albert (introduction, annotation, translation) Department of History University of Zurich Switzerland “I have no qualms about ... having shown Soviet Russia just like it is”: Aleksandr Lozovskii’s 1920 Reports About Travels with Foreign Delegates Introduction Travel reports were among the first texts published outside Soviet Russia about the Bolshevik regime. They have shaped the Western debates about Bolshevik power from the very beginning, and have resulted in an extensive research literature.1 More recently, historians have began to focus on the visits that produced these speculative and often spectacular reports. Older historiography tended to focus on the elements of deception by the Soviet authorities in orchestrating visits for foreign intellectuals, artists and politicians.2 More recent research, however, fuelled by the opening of the archives after the collapse of the Soviet Union, has painted a more detailed and nuanced picture. Michael David-Fox, in his recent monograph on early Soviet cultural diplomacy, shows how the intentions of the Soviet authorities were to “showcase” not Soviet reality, but models of a near future to such visitors. Similarly, David-Fox examines the effects of such encounters within the Soviet Union itself.3 Most recently, Anne Hartmann has analysed Lion Feuchtwanger’s 1937 journey to Stalinist Russia, which resulted in his infamous travel report “Moscow 1937”. By examining Soviet internal documentation of this journey, such as surveillance reports on the German writer, Hartmann not only shows that Feuchtwanger’s outlook on Stalin and the Great Terror was more ambiguous than his published report suggests, but also highlights the choreography and logistics of such visits, and the different levels of agency involved.4 All in all, the ‘archival 1 Bernhard Furler: Augen-Schein.
