PRESSETEXT Jean Paul Gaultier PRESSETEXT Thierry-Maxime Loriot (Hrsg.) Jean Paul Gaultier From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk Gebunden, 288 Seiten mit 250 farbigen und schwarz-weißen Abbildungen Preis € [D]35,- [A] 36,- ISBN 978-3-86873-907-7 Erscheinungstermin 17. September 2015 18. Sept. 2015 – 14. The Independent Magazine September 2003 p. 6-10 Foreign bodies Think Nineties grunge-chic, and you’re probably thinking of a Juergen Teller Image. But, as the photographer tells Sebastian Smee, while he’s still fascinated with the wilder shores of fashion, his work is moving ever closer to home. Portrait by Gautier Deblonde THIS ONE will take some explaining. The photographer Juergen Teller pauses for a good 10 seconds, then ruffles his hair. I have asked about the circumstances that gave rise to the somewhat surreal image you see above. The sprouting flora, I have already learnt, is not an overgrown hedge: it’s a resplendent version of the artist Jeff Koons’s most famous work. Puppy. Nor is that a discarded Barbie doll straddling one of its ears: it’s the American supermodel Stephanie Seymour. This, as it happens, is Seymour’s place in Connecticut: her freshly mown lawn, her Puppy, and — not far out of shot — her 100 horses, her two swimming pools, her world- class collection of haute couture, her collection of late 20th-century art... “I guess I met Stephanie around ‘94,” begins Teller. We are on the ground floor of his studio and home in London’s Ladbroke Grove. A table in the middle of the room is piled with prints of photographs. There is a scale model of a gallery on the floor, which Teller and his assistants are using to plan the hanging of his September exhibition at Milton Keynes Gallery; at the far end of the room is a doorway and stairs leading up (to his studio) and down (to his living quarters).

News Release Tilda Swinton, Grace Jones, Karen Elson and Grayson Perry feature in largest-ever exhibition on photographer Tim Walker – with over 150 new works inspired by the V&A’s collection Tim Walker: Wonderful Things Galleries 38a and 38 21 September 2019 – 8 March 2020 vam.ac.uk | #TimWalkerxVAM On 21 September, the V&A opens a new immersive exhibition inviting visitors to experience the fantastical imagination of Tim Walker, one of the world’s most inventive photographers. Tim Walker: Wonderful Things is the largest exhibition of Walker’s pictures to date. It celebrates his extraordinary contribution to image- making over the last 25 years and the inspirational role that the V&A’s collection plays in his creative process. At the heart of the exhibition are 10 major new photographic projects, directly influenced by treasures in the V&A’s vast collection. In preparation for the exhibition, Walker visited object stores and conservation studios, meeting many of the museum’s curators, conservators and technicians. He scoured the V&A’s 145 public galleries, scaled the roof of the 12-acre South Kensington site, and explored the labyrinth of Victorian passages below ground level. Along the way, he encountered luminous stained-glass windows, vivid Indian miniature paintings, jewelled snuffboxes, erotic illustrations, golden shoes, and a 65-metre-long photograph of the Bayeux Tapestry, the largest photograph in the museum’s collection. These and many other rare artefacts have inspired Walker’s monumental new photographs, and feature in the exhibition designed by leading British creative, Shona Heath. Tim Walker said: “To me, the V&A has always been a palace of dreams – it’s the most inspiring place in the world.

  • “If Avedon and Andy Warhol Had a Baby He Would Be Steven Meisel.” Steven Michael Gross
“If Avedon and Andy Warhol had a baby he would be Steven Meisel.” Steven Michael Gross “If Avedon and Andy Warhol had a baby he would be Steven Meisel.”1 Mixing up truths and untruths about a figure in the public eye is a widespread problem when writing about the Meisel first career steps of a prominent personality. The general tenor is that great passion, in- ternational fame, and an exceptional talent need to start with an overwhelming story. The stories circulated about the career start of the American photographer Steven Meisel seem to be a classic example for this phenomenon. It sounds like a well made-up prediction con- tributing to his success and influence within the fashion scene: hunting for models on the The Contemporary streets of New York, waiting in front of model agencies like a paparazzo, making a million phone calls to find out where he can shoot the top model Twiggy while he skipped school lessons to flip through the newest magazine issues owned by his mother. These anecdotes must be true since the photographer, born in New York in 1954, has shot the majority of the covers for the Italian Vogue for over twenty-five years, as well as many important fashion Iconographer stories and campaigns. Having these stories and facts about this passionate and well-ap- preciated man in mind, it is striking to find hardly any interviews or personal statements of Meisel. Controversial works such as the advertising campaign for Calvin Klein in 1995 which Valentina Frutig brought condemnation from Bill Clinton, or the book entitled Sex he produced in collabo- ration with Madonna in 1992, do not reflect a secretive person who would rather prefer to stay in the background.
