  • WHO IS FREDDIE GERSHON? May 2012
WHO IS FREDDIE GERSHON? May 2012 An entertainment attorney/cocktail pianist/would-be songwriter who graduated from law school the same year the Beatles went on the Ed Sullivan show… a turning point in pop culture history and a propitious factor in Gershon’s career. Armed with eight years of serious music study at The Juilliard School and The Art Student League plus integrity, respect for artists and sensitivity to cultural change, Freddie was a magnet for aspiring talent. He attracted and represented many people, some of whom became prominent artists in the music field as well as inventive, creative talents in the film and theatre worlds. Ultimately, he became a film and theatre producer, a part owner and COO of a history-making, highly successful entertainment company, an early proponent in protecting intellectual property and an active participant in some of the defining moments of contemporary pop culture and successes on the stage, screen and in music. An author, lecturer and music industry pioneer straddling the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s, ’90s through to the present with a variety of experience in media and communications, Freddie has utilized different perspectives and has an overview of the sociological/cultural shifts and climate in entertainment and communications. He understands “content” versus delivery of that “content” and has a reputation for being able to keep his finger on the pulse of change and to act accordingly. Lew Wasserman called him a future scenarist. After graduating from Columbia Law School in 1964, Freddie Gershon began practicing at a music/theatrical law firm. “Freddie-the-Lawyer” was a young practitioner in New York for such emerging talents as film director Michael Ritchie “Downhill Racer” and “The Candidate,” Ron Field choreographer/director of “Cabaret,” “Zorba” and “Applause,” playwright Tom Eyen “Dreamgirls,” composers Neil Sedaka, Marvin Hamlisch, Carole Bayer Sager, Lesley Gore and Shel Silverstein, and performing artists including Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Dr.

March27 May 2001 2005 Getting the Band Back Together Appeared in - The Adelaide Review Cream Royal Albert Hall, London 5 May When it was first announced in the English press that the 1960s cult group Cream was reforming for four nights at the Royal Albert Hall there was an outpouring, you might say, of dairy metaphors. Would they be as fresh as they were thirty seven years ago? Would the old enmities between mem- bers sour the occasion? Would they blend, or remain somehow colloidal? Would they prove to be long life, or go to powder? Word of the reunion first came from the guitarist, Eric Clapton, when he blurted the news on Radio 2 back in December last year, and, when tickets went on sale in March, all four concerts sold out in a matter of hours. Since then, rumours have been rife of tickets on e-Bay going for upwards of two thousand quid. On the night I attended there were dozens of scalpers briskly pacing the circumference of the Albert Hall looking to buy, sell and trade the hottest ticket in London. There are many reasons why a Cream reunion should be such an event. Hailed as the first supergroup - meaning, the players came from already successful bands - Cream, modestly named by Clapton to indicate their calibre, were, in 1966, something completely different. Their first album, Fresh Cream, with a cover depicting the band in aviator leathers while the title graphics formed a white psychedelic droplet in the right hand corner, suggested a new hybrid - musicians with peerless blues credentials (Alexis Korner, John Mayall, Graham Bond’s Organisation) were also pick- ing up signals from the acid rock scene in the American West.

  • The Films of Peter Weir
THE CINEMATIC MYSTICAL GAZE: The films of Peter Weir RICHARD JAMES LEONARD Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy August 2003 Cinema Studies Program School of Fine Arts, Classical Studies and Archaeology The University of Melbourne Abstract Peter Weir is one of Australia’s most critically acclaimed and commercially successful directors. Ever since Weir’s feature film debut with The Cars that Ate Paris in 1974, his work has been explored for unifying themes. Scholars have analysed his films from many perspectives: the establishment of identification and identity especially through binary oppositions in the diegesis;1 the creation of an oneiric atmosphere as a way of exploiting the spectator’s dream experience;2 a clash of value systems;3 the ambiguous nature of narrative structure and character motivations leading to the creation of a sense of wonder;4 the experience of the protagonist placed in a foreign culture wherein conflict arises from social clashes and personal misunderstandings;5 and at the particular ways his films adapt generic codes in service of a discernible ideological agenda.6 To the best of my knowledge there has been no study of the mystical element of Weir’s work in relation to the construction of a cinematic mystical gaze or act of spectatorship. Within a culture defined by its secularity and a national cinema marked by quirky comedies and social realism, almost all of Weir’s films have been described as mystical, arcane or interested in metaphysics. Such an observation could warrant no further investigation if it is held that this critical commentary is but hyperbole in its attempt to grasp what constitutes a Peter Weir film.
