This study traces the expansion of the srdc scheme from its compact deployment in strophes to expanded iterations that approximate verse- chorus form. Received February 2011 [1] This article examines an episode in the evolution of verse-chorus form in pop/rock music. Until the mid-1960s, most verse-chorus songs alternated between the two formal sections from which verse-chorus form takes its name: verses and choruses. Example 1, Mark Dinning’s “Teen Angel,” illustrates the form.(2) As is typical for verse-chorus songs, the focal point of “Teen Angel” is the chorus: it contains the most engaging musical material; its unchanging lyric makes it easy to remember; and it is marked for special attention by additional vocal and instrumental parts. The verses, on the other hand, provide context: each verse advances the song narrative by presenting fresh lyrics; and the music is more modest in instrumentation and intensity so as not to steal attention from the chorus. In “Teen Angel,” the tempo is treated flexibly during the verses, which further distinguishes them from the choruses. -

On page 15, you can read about Dr. Brett Barger Despite a packed schedule, I had the chance to meet many from the class of ’93. He’s an alumnus who’s accomplished of our dedicated and committed alumni and see their love quite a bit, and he now serves as president of Lindenwood’s of Lindenwood firsthand. Karen and I particularly enjoyed Belleville campus. visiting with the ladies from our 50-year class of 1965! I can’t go much further without mentioning John Creer, This edition of Connection is filled with alumni pride– who has had a storied career here at Lindenwood. 1 BBC Four Biopics
BBC Four biopics: Lessons in Trashy Respectability The broadcast of Burton and Taylor in July 2013 marked the end of a decade- long cycle of feature-length biographical dramas transmitted on BBC Four, the niche arts and culture digital channel of the public service broadcaster. The subjects treated in these biopics were various: political figures, famous cooks, authors of popular literature, comedians and singers. The dramas focused largely on the unhappy or complex personal lives of well-loved figures of British popular culture. From the lens of the 21st century, these dramas offered an opportunity for audiences to reflect on the culture and society of the 20th century, changing television’s famous function of ‘witness’ to one of ‘having witnessed’ and/or ‘remembering’ (Ellis, 2000). The programmes function as nostalgia pieces, revisiting personalities familiar to the anticipated older audience of BBC Four, working in concert with much of the archive and factual content on the digital broadcaster’s schedules. However, by revealing apparent ‘truths’ that reconfigure the public images of the figures they narrate, these programmes also undermine nostalgic impulses, presenting conflicting interpretations of the recent past. They might equally be seen as impudent incursions onto the memory of the public figures, unnecessarily exposing the real-life subjects to censure, ridicule or ex post facto critical judgement. Made thriftily on small budgets, the films were modest and spare in visual style but were generally well received critically, usually thanks to writerly screenplays and strong central performances. The dramas became an irregular but important staple of the BBC Four schedule, furnishing the channel with some of their highest ratings in a history chequered by low audience numbers. -

The new artists of the 2016 show Dennis Bryon (original drummer of the Bee Gees) Born in Cardiff / Wales Dennis started at the age of 14 to play the drums. Together with Blue Weaver he started the group Amen Corner one of the most popular European bands in the 60ties. In 1973 Dennis became member of The Bee Gees Band. In that period with Dennis on drums they became one of the most popular bands of all time. During his musical career Dennis wrote, produced and performed with amongst others Barbra Streisand, Jimi Hendrix and Bill Lloyd. Till Nau ( director and choreographer). Till started his career by playing in musicals. He did performances for instance in the Palladium Theater Stuttgart (Mama Mia), in the National Theater in Mannheim (Anything Goes), at the Thuner Seefestspielen (West Side Story) and in the Hamburg theater (Marilyn, das musical). He was musical leader and dance captain from 2007 until 2010 for Aida Cruises worldwide, for Phoenix Travels and the National Theater Mannheim. Since 2000 he already is choreagrapher and director in different theaters. And the past years he has also been teacher on musical schools. Astrid Hagenah (dancer, actress) Astrid graduated on the Stage School Hamburg being musical actress. She has learned countless different dance types like: jazz, modern, standard and latin dances as well as street dance and ballet. She got stage experience in several shows in Germany like: Monday Nights, Shanti, Junglebook etc. Being a dance teacher as well she's also often asked to perform in music videos. Marlou Düster (dancer, actress) The young stage actress has already succesfully played in lots of musicals. -
The Nation's Matron: Hattie Jacques and British Post-War Popular Culture
The Nation’s Matron: Hattie Jacques and British post-war popular culture Estella Tincknell Abstract: Hattie Jacques was a key figure in British post-war popular cinema and culture, condensing a range of contradictions around power, desire, femininity and class through her performances as a comedienne, primarily in the Carry On series of films between 1958 and 1973. Her recurrent casting as ‘Matron’ in five of the hospital-set films in the series has fixed Jacques within the British popular imagination as an archetypal figure. The contested discourses around nursing and the centrality of the NHS to British post-war politics, culture and identity, are explored here in relation to Jacques’s complex star meanings as a ‘fat woman’, ‘spinster’ and authority figure within British popular comedy broadly and the Carry On films specifically. The article argues that Jacques’s star meanings have contributed to nostalgia for a supposedly more equitable society symbolised by socialised medicine and the feminine authority of the matron.
