Biographical Note by The HistoryMakers® Baritone vocalist and member of the legendary R&B group The Temptations, Otis Clayborn Williams was born on October 30, 1941 in Texarkana, Texas to Hazel Louise Williams and the elder Otis Miles. At the age of ten, Williams and his mother relocated to Detroit, Michigan, and he began using his mother’s last name. In 1955, Williams attended Detroit’s Northwestern High School where he became classmates with future-Temptations Melvin Franklin and Richard Street. As an adolescent, Williams became interested in music and joined with fellow classmates to form singing groups such as Otis Williams and the Siberians, The El Domingoes and The Distants. As a member of The Distants, Williams sang baritone alongside Melvin Franklin and Al Bryant and was the co-writer of the group’s hit song “Come On.” However, his fame with The Distants became short lived once the group received an offer from the president of Motown Records, Berry Gordy. -

Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least. -

At the age of ten, Williams and his mother relocated to Detroit, Michigan, and he began using his mother’s last name. In 1955, Williams attended Detroit’s Northwestern High School where he became classmates with future- Temptations Melvin Franklin and Richard Street. Amidst humble origins in a two-story house outside of which Berry Gordy hung the sign, “Hitsville USA,” Motown encouraged America’s youth, urging them to look beyond racial divides and to simply sing and dance together in a time where the theme of unity was becoming increasingly important. Producing legends such as Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Martha Reeves, Gladys Knight, and the Jackson Five, Motown truly created a new sound for the youth of America and helped shape the 1960s. Competing with the “British Invasion” and “the Protest Movement,” in 1960s music, Motown is often said to have had little or no impact on the political and social revolution of the time because Motown did not produce “message 4 music.” The 2006 film, Dreamgirls even depicts Gordy and Motown as hypocrites and race traitors. -

A Review of Famous Songs of the Past ‘Fascinating Facts’ January 2019 Track 1 The Hokey Pokey The hokey cokey (United Kingdom) or hokey pokey (United States, Canada, Ireland, Australia), is a participation dance with a distinctive accompanying tune and lyric structure. It is well known in English-speaking countries. It is of unclear origin. Ray Anthony (born January 20, 1922) is an American bandleader, trumpeter, songwriter, and actor. He is the last surviving member of the Glenn Miller Orchestra. Track 2 Blow The Wind Southerly A traditional English folk song from Northumbria. It tells of a woman desperately hoping for a southerly wind to blow her lover back home over the ocean to her. Kathleen Ferrier recorded what is perhaps the best-known version of the song in London in 1949. Kathleen Mary Ferrier, CBE (22 April 1912 – 8 October 1953) was an English contralto singer who achieved an international reputation as a stage, concert and recording artist, with a repertoire extending from folksong and popular ballads to the classical works of Bach, Brahms, Mahler and Elgar. Track 3 Jamaica Farewell This track is a calypso tune about the beauty of the West Indian Islands. It was Belafonte who popularised the song outside the Caribbean Islands. Harry Belafonte, born Harold George Bellanfanti, Jr in Harlem, New York, From 1932 to 1940, he lived with his grandmother in her native country of Jamaica. In the 1940s he became interested in American Negro Theater. He and Sidney Poitier, both financially struggling, regularly purchased a single seat to local plays, trading places in between acts, informing the other about the progression of the play. -

The Temptations & The Four Tops: Saturday, August 15, 2009 at 8 p.m. Entertainment 2009-08-14 16:42:39 The Temptations Vienna, VA - The Temptations hit the Wolf Trap stage for an evening of classic Motown hits from the ’60s and ’70s. Together since 1960, when the Primes and the Distants merged to become the Temptations, the band has had four No. 1 hits, including “My Girl” and “Papa Was a Rolling Stone.” Their debut album, Meet the Temptations, was dubbed one of the Top 100 Pop Albums of the year in 1964. Though they took a brief break in the ’70s, the band came back strong in 1981 with the hit “Power.” With four Grammy wins, the Temptations have produced hit tunes for over 50 years, and have tailored their songs to satisfy the musical palates of all generations. The Four Tops Together since high school, The Four Tops released their self-titled debut album in 1964, creating hit after hit for the next half century. 1964 proved to be a pivotal year for the band, when “Baby I Need Your Loving,” “I Can’t Help Myself,” and “Reach Out, I’ll Be There” all became smash hits. The Four Tops continued into the ’70s with more hit singles, and finally hit No. 1 with “When She Was My Girl” in 1981. The band retained its original members for 40 years, and in 1990 was inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame.
