Run phone polls during the housewife hours as well as in the teen segments. It’ll pay off. The big portion of the pop record dollar is going toward Beatle, Dave Clark Five and Elvis product. Not all, but a big share. Country sales are down, way down. R & B is strong and seems to be setting the pace for tomorrow’s trend. If there is a local R & B station, I suggest you follow their programming closely. Tie all of the above together and you’ll make a minimum of mistakes. W e ’ve tried to tell you before that when the music business slows down, and it’s moving at a low level now, it’s hard to tell the hits from the non-hits. New product for the most part is weak. Weaker than five or six weeks ago. Most labels are either holding up strong new sides or just don’t know in which direction to move. Makes it tough for programming, when you're accustomed to selecting the cream. Now's the time to make certain you count on more than music to hold an audience. Because if you don’t, you'll be losing to the 'good' music and network or R & B stations until the situation is clear. I ’m dead serious. If the calibre of product of top forty type programming were to remain at today's level, we could be in for a major shift in top forty or m o d e m music broad­ casting. At this point, it doesn’t look like a winner, but you won’t hurt yourself by programming it. NOT FADE AWAY - Rolling Stones (London) #19 at WFUN-Miami. Some activity in Tennessee. Somewhat lighter reports on the Dick & Dee Dee Version. I DON’T WANT TO EE HURT ANYMORE - Nat King Cole (Capitol) A smash in New Orleans. Give it time and it’ll smash everywhere in the South.     Beatles Cover Albums during the Beatle Period As a companion to the Hollyridge Strings page, this page proposes to be a listing of (and commentary on) certain albums that were released in the United States between 1964 and April 1970. Every album in this listing has a title that indicates Beatles-related content and/or a cover that is a parody of a Beatles cover. In addition, the content of every album listed here is at least 50% Beatles-related (or, in the case of albums from 1964, "British"). Albums that are not included here include, for example, records named after a single Beatles song but which contain only a few Beatles songs: for example, Hey Jude, Hey Bing!, by Bing Crosby. 1964: Nineteen-sixty-four saw the first wave of Beatles cover albums. The earliest of these were released before the release of "Can't Buy Me Love." They tended to be quickly-recorded records designed to capitalize rapidly on the group's expanding success. Therefore, most of these albums are on small record labels, and the records themselves tended to be loaded with "filler." Possibly, the companies were not aware of the majority of Beatle product.     “Heart Like a Wheel”—Linda Ronstadt (1974) Added to the National Registry: 2013 Essay by Cary O’Dell Original album Original label Peter Asher Linda Ronstadt’s 1974 album “Heart Like a Wheel” was her fifth as a solo artist. And though she had previously enjoyed some chart success with the group The Stone Poneys (their recording of “Different Drum” was a hit in 1967) and achieved some success as a solo artist in 1970 with the song “Long Long Time,” “Heart Like a Wheel” is considered her breakthrough album and, to some, her career masterwork. Considering Ronstadt’s “Heart” success, musically and commercially, it is not surprising that it was this album that also marked the first time Ronstadt had an entire album steered by music producer extraordinaire Peter Asher. Asher, a former performer (he was the Peter in Peter & Gordon), began managing and producing other performers in late 1960s. One of his first clients was a young troubadour named James Taylor. In the early ‘70s, after an introduction by Taylor’s sister, Kate, Asher began managing and producing Linda Ronstadt. Once joined up with Ronstadt, Asher and the California-based singer soon became something of a dynamic duo. “Heart” marked the beginning of a long and extraordinarily successful collaboration; every subsequent album Ronstadt would ever record with Asher—all 13 of them-- would eventually be certified either gold or platinum. Since her debut on vinyl with the Stone Poneys and as a solo act via her early albums “Hand Sown…Home Grown” (1969), “Silk Purse” (1970) and “Linda Ronstadt” (1972), Ronstadt had been working steadily in pushing the country genre toward the pop mainstream.
