Monday, April 20, 1964 Number Fifty Two HIT OF THE WEEK: MY GUY - Mary Wells (Motown) Headed for #1. It'll be the biggest hit she’s ever had. CORRESPONDENTS POPULAR PICK: CHAPEL OF LOVE - Dixie Cups (Red Bird) Great acceptance for new artists. This one has it in the grooves. All of the power stations are on it throughout the country. Don’t miss the beat. SURPRISE OF THE WEEK: ONE WAY LOVE - Drifters (Atlantic) I wasn’t impressed the first time I heard it. But I ’m sold on it now and so is a great portion of Dixie. Taking off in Texas, Georgia, Tennessee, and North Carolina. Looks like one of their biggest. HOT ACTION RECORD: RONNIE - Four Seasons (Philips) Burning a hot path to the top five. Activity reported in Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Kentucky, Georgia, Florida, West Virginia, Tennessee, Alabama and the Carolinas. SMS CHOICE OF THE WEEK: A WORLD WITHOUT LOVE - Peter & Gordon (Capitol) I t ’s the number one hit in England now, and how many times have you heard that line since the first of j the year? I ’m certain it won’t do that well over here, but you must play it; the kids will want you to. Paul McCartney and John Lennon wrote it. And Peter may wind up being Paul’s brother-in-law. See what I mean. It just missed being top ten after only two plays at WQXI-Atlanta. SMS ALBUM OF THE WEEK; HANK WILLIAMS JR SINGS THE SONGS OF HANK WILLIAMS (MGM) Initial sales on this pick of a few weeks ago have been large. They’ll be much bigger. Do yourself a favor and check SMS-50. Play on this will be an asset. SOUTHERN TOP TWENTY 1. 2) SUSPICION-Terry Stafford (Cru) 11. Run phone polls during the housewife hours as well as in the teen segments. It’ll pay off. The big portion of the pop record dollar is going toward Beatle, Dave Clark Five and Elvis product. Not all, but a big share. Country sales are down, way down. R & B is strong and seems to be setting the pace for tomorrow’s trend. If there is a local R & B station, I suggest you follow their programming closely. Tie all of the above together and you’ll make a minimum of mistakes. W e ’ve tried to tell you before that when the music business slows down, and it’s moving at a low level now, it’s hard to tell the hits from the non-hits. New product for the most part is weak. Weaker than five or six weeks ago. Most labels are either holding up strong new sides or just don’t know in which direction to move. Makes it tough for programming, when you're accustomed to selecting the cream. Now's the time to make certain you count on more than music to hold an audience. Because if you don’t, you'll be losing to the 'good' music and network or R & B stations until the situation is clear. I ’m dead serious. If the calibre of product of top forty type programming were to remain at today's level, we could be in for a major shift in top forty or m o d e m music broad casting. Monday, April 20, 1964 -3- Number Fifty Two JAVA JONES - Donna Lynn (Capitol) So far it's mostly a turntable item. At this point, it doesn’t look like a winner, but you won’t hurt yourself by programming it. NOT FADE AWAY - Rolling Stones (London) #19 at WFUN-Miami. Some activity in Tennessee. Somewhat lighter reports on the Dick & Dee Dee Version. I DON’T WANT TO EE HURT ANYMORE - Nat King Cole (Capitol) A smash in New Orleans. Give it time and it’ll smash everywhere in the South. WHAT’S THE MATTER WITH YOU BABY - Mary Wells & Marvin Gaye (Motown) Could do for them ■what "Gonna Work Out Fine" did for Ike & Tina. Top effort.
