Run phone polls during the housewife hours as well as in the teen segments. It’ll pay off. The big portion of the pop record dollar is going toward Beatle, Dave Clark Five and Elvis product. Not all, but a big share. Country sales are down, way down. R & B is strong and seems to be setting the pace for tomorrow’s trend. If there is a local R & B station, I suggest you follow their programming closely. Tie all of the above together and you’ll make a minimum of mistakes. W e ’ve tried to tell you before that when the music business slows down, and it’s moving at a low level now, it’s hard to tell the hits from the non-hits. New product for the most part is weak. Weaker than five or six weeks ago. Most labels are either holding up strong new sides or just don’t know in which direction to move. Makes it tough for programming, when you're accustomed to selecting the cream. Now's the time to make certain you count on more than music to hold an audience. Because if you don’t, you'll be losing to the 'good' music and network or R & B stations until the situation is clear. I ’m dead serious. If the calibre of product of top forty type programming were to remain at today's level, we could be in for a major shift in top forty or m o d e m music broad casting. Monday, April 20, 1964 -3- Number Fifty Two JAVA JONES - Donna Lynn (Capitol) So far it's mostly a turntable item. At this point, it doesn’t look like a winner, but you won’t hurt yourself by programming it. NOT FADE AWAY - Rolling Stones () #19 at WFUN-Miami. Some activity in Tennessee. Somewhat lighter reports on the Dick & Dee Dee Version. I DON’T WANT TO EE HURT ANYMORE - Nat King Cole (Capitol) A smash in New Orleans. Give it time and it’ll smash everywhere in the South. WHAT’S THE MATTER WITH YOU BABY - Mary Wells & Marvin Gaye (Motown) Could do for them ■what "Gonna Work Out Fine" did for Ike & Tina. Top effort. Forget the flip for now. I t ’ll get its chance later. This will win for you, only if you play it. Paul McCartney and John Lennon wrote it. Say the magic names when you play it and you’re home free. WHO’S THAT LADY - Isley Brothers (UA) Both Hot Scott and Burke Johnson think this can go. VTVA LAS VEGAS - Elvis Presley (RCA) Label will get it to you before the first of May. Top ten in England. Top request at WFUN, WHBQ and WQXI. Flip side is getting more calls in Memphis, "What’d I Say." COLD AT NIGHT - Nita Hill (Circle) Have a funny feeling this older side could go, if it were given some strong play. #17 for Ron Fuller. LONG TALL SHORTY - Tommy Tucker (Checker) His second smashi Nuff said! TODAY - New Christy Minstrels (Columbia) Coming up strong in Raleigh. It’ll take patience. Your patience will pay off. SHY ONE - Shirley Ell is (Congress) Off and climbing into the charts in Washington. For the long pull, it has a great chance. Monday, April 20, 1964 -4- Number Fifty Two YESTERDAY'S GONE - Overlanders (Hickory) Bill Scott and several others pick this to climb. Good clean sound that may go. I ’m not that sold on it, but it was the second most picked side in Dixie last week. And that impresses me. LET THEM TALK - Mitty Collier (Chess) If I could tip you to just one hot side to play that you’re not playing, then this would be it. Was top five in Atlanta due to the efforts of WAOK. They made a believer out of me. SHENANDOAH - Goldebriar Singers (Epic) Single from the LP. Welcome change of pace. Activity in Georgia and Florida. LOVE ME WITH ALL YOUR HEART - Ray Charles Singers (Command) I thought the song had it months ago -when we reviewed the Steve Allen and Hermanes Riguel records. But this is doing what those didn't. Selling! SOUL HOOTENANNY - Gene Chandler (Constellation) At this stage it’s still an inbetween item. Not a hit and not a bomb. THE VERY THOUGHT OF YOU - Rick Nelson (Decca) Everyone should have this by now. A strong pick hit! SECURITY - Otis Redding (Volt) From his album. It’ll be out as a single in about ten days. Credit Billy Gene-WAUG for being first to expose it. A LOVER’S BLUES - Margie Hendrix (TRC) Top grade R & B material that could go pop after it’s off the ground. ALBUM PROGRAMMING SHUT DOWN VOL 2 - Beach Boys (Capitol) There’s a good chance that nothing from this one will be used as part of their next single. So, don’t extend yourself too far with any one side from it. Top requests for "Louie Louie" at WNOX-Knoxville. "Cassius Love vs Sonny Wilson" is making noise at WFUN-Miami. "Don’t Worry Baby" would be the side, if the label does pull one out. PRESENTING THE TAMS (ABC) Generally a weak entry, but it does contain two sides that re quire your attention. BEST: "Dancing Mood". FAIR: "It’s All Right." BARBARA LEWIS SINGS THE GREAT SOUL TUNES (Atlantic) Be a hero! Her next hit could come from this one. "Puppy Love" came from an album that died on the distributors shelves, until some enterprising young man up North gave it some spins. And the number wound up being a smash in Dixie, but so so up there. BEST: "Please Please Please." MONDO CANE § 2 - Kai Winding (Verve) He appears determined to stay with this sound until he comes up with another hit. A couple of numbers in this album appear stronger than the title song. BEST: "Till." The following have been previously reviewed. Consult back issues for BEST, GOOD and FAIR selections. The listing does not reflect the popularity or newness of the album. A great percentage of today’s long play albums give birth to bit hit singles.
