AND THEN SOME! WORDS Phil Wain / PICTURES Stephen Davison The Isle of Man TT Races are the last of the great motorcycle tests in the When the TT lost its World Championship status, many thought it was world today and, at 100 years old they show no sign of slowing down. Instead the beginning of the end but, instead, it became a haven for real road race of creaking and rocking, the event is right back to the top of the motorcycle specialists who were keen to pit their wits against the Mountain Course, tree, continuing to maintain its status throughout the world and attracting the most challenging and demanding course in the world. Names like Grant, the fi nest road racers on the planet. Excitement, triumph, glory, exhilaration, Williams, Rutter, Hislop, Fogarty, McCallen, Jefferies and McGuinness came to and tragedy – the TT has it all and for two weeks in June the little Island in the forefront, but throughout it all one name stood out – Joey Dunlop. -

Published by Peel Copy Centre Tel: +44 (0)1624 843889 Page 1 I hope you are all enjoying some good riding this summer, even if you have to choose your days. The Summer Party was a huge success, something we will repeat and our Test Days at Jurby have been greatly enjoyed. This has resulted in a number of new and younger members to the Club which has to be positive for our Section, it certainly bucks the national VMCC trend. Our Jurby Festival now looms large and I would ask all members to help on or before the day as we really need you. Whilst on the subject of Jurby, it would be opportune for me to explain again our current Club structure. -

Isle of Man Tt Races 2006
ISLE OF MAN TT RACES 2006 MAY 27th-JUNE 9th A GUIDE TO THIS YEAR’S SOLO AND SIDECAR TT STARS Rider: Bruce Anstey Age: 36 From: Wellington, New Zealand Number of TT wins: 4 Number of TT podiums: 13 Fastest TT Lap: 126.52mph (5th) Team for 2006: TAS Suzuki A man of few words, the quietly spoken Kiwi does his talking out there on the road and with 4 TT wins and 13 podiums since 2000, he delivers where it matters. Bruce didn’t have a great 2005 as he was blighted by Bruce Anstey en route to victory in the mechanical problems, illness and a few crashes but he still added another TT win to his collection and is sure 2005 Superstock TT. to be there or thereabouts in all of his races this year. Now in his third year with TAS Suzuki, Anstey is a hard charging rider and an incredibly fi erce competitor. Rider: Adrian Archibald Age: 36 From: Ballymoney, Northern Ireland Number of TT wins: 3 Number of TT podiums: 7 Fastest TT Lap: 126.78mph (4th) Team for 2006: Team Racing Yamaha A man with a point to prove, Adrian left TAS Suzuki after a disappointing year in 2005, compounded by running out of fuel whilst comfortably leading the Superstock race. With fi ve podiums in the last six Superbike races, the Ballymoney ace was also on lap record pace in last year’s Senior so it’s clear that he’s a potential race winner in Adrian Archibald has the talent and 2006. -

1 Spectators' Negotiations of Risk, Masculinity and Performative
Spectators’ negotiations of risk, masculinity and performative mobilities at the TT races Alan Terry, Avril Maddrell , Tim Gale and Simon Arlidge University of the West of England Abstract This paper explores the particular assemblage of place, event and individual identity-performances that occur each year in the Isle of Man in and through the TT (Tourist Trophy) motorcycle races. These road races are associated with a high degree of risk for the racers and the confluence of over 30,000 visitors and 10,000 motorcycles also presents potential risks for spectators and residents alike. Both motorcycling and risk-taking have been associated with particular forms of masculinity, notably hegemonic, working class and youthful masculinities. Using detailed surveys of spectators we argue that the TT races, while undoubtedly dominated by men and predicated on a cultural privileging of speed and skill, are grounded in varying combinations of determinate and reflexive attitudes to risk, reflecting the performance of a variety of gendered, ‘biker’ and wider identity-based positionalities. Findings also highlight a particular inter-relation of mobilities and place identity at the TT races and brings to light the highly significant and under-researched embodied, performative and emotional mobilities of spectators. The conceptual and methodological importance of a) situated research of mobiliities in specific place-temporalities; and b) wider surveys of motorcyclists to complement ethnographic studies of small cohorts are also stressed. Key words: Isle of Man TT, masculinities, moto-mobilities, risk, road racing, spectators Introduction The importance of studying motorcyclists as participants in an alternative form of moto-mobility has recently been argued by Pinch and Reimer (2012) on the grounds that motorcycles are virtually absent in mobilities studies, yet represent a very different set of travelling dispositions and emotions relative to much-studied car drivers. -
Stuart Parr Owns the Sickest Collection of Vintage Italian Motorcycles
February 12, 2018 Stuart Parr Owns the Sickest Collection of Vintage Italian Motorcycles By Sasha Levine Most people grow out of their childhood obsessions; Stuart Parr simply grew into his. What began with a wooden cigar box full of Corgi and Hot Wheels model cars has, over the course of three decades, evolved into several storage spaces worth of mint-condition vintage Italian motorcycles. “I’ve always been led visually,” says Parr, who—as a designer (Tribeca’s Marble House, Shelter Island’s Clearhouse), film producer (8-Mile, Southpaw), and trademark owner of 1930s interiors talents Jean-Michel Frank and Warren McArthur—has the CV to back it up. “Whether it’s Pininfarina, Bertoni, Scaglietti—the Italians design beautiful machinery.” This week, 35 of Parr’s 70-some-piece collection of ’60s and ’70s motorcycles will be on view in Miami’s Design District for the second edition of “The Art of the Italian Two Wheel,” which premiered in New York in 2015. In the exhibition, running from Feb. 16 through April 22 at 180 N.E. 40th Street, Parr presents a selection of his most prized models from Ducati, Benelli, Laverda, Magni, and MV Agusta, and, for the first time, shows off one of his own design. Working with constructor Giovanni Magni at Arturo Magni’s shop, Parr will debut his MV Agusta 750 Sport Tributo at the end of March in an edition of fifty. “I already have twelve people who told me they’d take [one],” he says. Ahead of the exhibition’s opening, we caught up with Parr to get a glimpse of his collection up close.
