Epilist 1.0: a Global Checklist of Vascular Epiphytes
Zurich Open Repository and Archive University of Zurich Main Library Strickhofstrasse 39 CH-8057 Zurich www.zora.uzh.ch Year: 2021 EpiList 1.0: a global checklist of vascular epiphytes Zotz, Gerhard ; Weigelt, Patrick ; Kessler, Michael ; Kreft, Holger ; Taylor, Amanda Abstract: Epiphytes make up roughly 10% of all vascular plant species globally and play important functional roles, especially in tropical forests. However, to date, there is no comprehensive list of vas- cular epiphyte species. Here, we present EpiList 1.0, the first global list of vascular epiphytes based on standardized definitions and taxonomy. We include obligate epiphytes, facultative epiphytes, and hemiepiphytes, as the latter share the vulnerable epiphytic stage as juveniles. Based on 978 references, the checklist includes >31,000 species of 79 plant families. Species names were standardized against World Flora Online for seed plants and against the World Ferns database for lycophytes and ferns. In cases of species missing from these databases, we used other databases (mostly World Checklist of Selected Plant Families). For all species, author names and IDs for World Flora Online entries are provided to facilitate the alignment with other plant databases, and to avoid ambiguities. EpiList 1.0 will be a rich source for synthetic studies in ecology, biogeography, and evolutionary biology as it offers, for the first time, a species‐level overview over all currently known vascular epiphytes. At the same time, the list represents work in progress: species descriptions of epiphytic taxa are ongoing and published life form information in floristic inventories and trait and distribution databases is often incomplete and sometimes evenwrong. -

Two Additions to the Mexican Orchid Flora

Two species of Orchidaceae are recorded here for the first time in Mexico, namelyCryptarrhena guatemalensis and Domingoa gemma. Cryptarrhena guatemalensis is widespread in the Neotropics and can be distinguished from C. lunata, the only other species of the genus, by possessing pseudobulbs and narrowly triangular, attenuate apical labellum lobules. Domingoa gemma, previously known only from Guatemala and El Salvador, differs from the similar D. purpurea in the smooth, linear-lanceolate leaves and labellum lacking a prominent sac at the base. Both species are known in Mexico from single localities in the state of Chiapas. Key words: Chiapas, Cryptarrhena guatemalensis, Domingoa gemma, new records, Orchidaceae. Resumen. Se registran aquí por primera vez en México 2 especies de Orchidaceae, Cryptarrhena guatemalensis y Domingoa gemma. Cryptarrhena guatemalensis está ampliamente distribuida en el neotrópico y se distingue de C. lunata, la única otra especie del género, por presentar pseudobulbos y por los lóbulos apicales del labelo angostamente triangularesy atenuados. Domingoa gemma, previamente conocida sólo de Guatemala y El Salvador, difiere de D. purpurea, especie similar, en las hojas lisas, linear-lanceoladas y el labelo sin un saco prominente en la base. En México sólo se conoce una localidad para cada especie y ambas se ubican en el estado de Chiapas. -

Acta Biológica Catarinense 06 Jan-Jun;3():36-48 Orchidaceae Flora of Joinville, Santa Catarina, Brazil Flora de Orchidaceae de Joinville, Santa Catarina, Brasil Werner Siebje MANCINELLI,3 & Karin ESEMANN-QUADROS ABSTRACT Recebido: 7 jan. 06 The objective of this work was to conduct a floristic study of Orchidaceae in the municipality Aceito: 9 mar. 06 of Joinville (Santa Catarina, Brazil), which occurred from 2006 to 2015. The municipality is mainly covered with Atlantic Forest between 0 and 1,335 m elevation. For the family, 211 species within 90 genera were recorded. The richest genera are Epidendrum (17 spp.), Pabstiella (15 spp.), Acianthera (14 spp.), Anathallis (8 spp.) and Octomeria (8 spp.). The majority of the species are epiphytes (82%), 11% are terrestrial, and the remaining 7% are hemi-epiphytes, rupicolous or myco-heterotrophic. Two species, Grobya guiselii and Homalopetalum joinvillense, are known only from Joinville. Keywords: Atlantic Forest; Floristic; Orchids; South Brazilian. RESUMO Este trabalho teve como objetivo realizar o estudo florístico de Orchidaceae em Joinville (Santa Catarina – Brasil), que ocorreu entre 2006 e 2015. O município é caracterizado principalmente pela mata atlântica nativa, que pode ser encontrada entre as altitudes de 0 e 1.335 m. A família possui 211 espécies distribuídas em 90 gêneros. Os gêneros mais ricos são Epidendrum (17 spp.), Pabstiella (15 spp.), Acianthera (14 spp.), Anathallis (8 spp.) e Octomeria (8 spp.). A maioria das espécies ocorre como epífita (82%), 11% são terrícolas, e hemiepífitas, rupícolas e mico-heterotróficas representam 7%. Até o momento, duas espécies são conhecidas apenas para Joinville: Grobya guiselii e Homalopetalum joinvillense. -

Selbyana 9: 2-22 THE SYSTEMATIC DISTRIBUTION OF VASCULAR EPIPHYTES: AN UPDATE w. JOHN KREss Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, 811 South Palm Avenue, Sarasota, Florida 33577 ABSTRACT. The list of vascular plant families and genera containing epiphytic species published by Madison (1977) is updated here. Ten percent (23,456 species) of all vascular plant species are epiphytes. Seven percent (876) of the genera, 19 percent (84) of the families, 45 percent (44) of the orders and 75 percent (6) of the classes contain epiphytes. Twenty-three families contain over 50 epiphytic species each. The Orchidaceae is the largest family of epiphytes, containing 440 epiphytic genera and 13,951 epiphytic species. Forty-three genera of vascular plants each contain over 100 epiphytic species. In Mexico, orchids are the third family more diverse, and Oaxaca is the state with the highest richness in the country. Orchids are widely distributed in tropical environments, but they are also distributed in temperate forests, where they have been scarcely studied. Questions: What is the diversity of orchid species at the locality of Santa Catarina Lachatao? Which subfamilies and growth forms are distributed at that locality? Do the community of orchids flowers differentially between seasons? Studied species: Species of the Orchidaceae family. Study site and dates: Santa Catarina Lachatao, Oaxaca, 2017-2018. Methods: Orchids were collected monthly throughout a year. Collected specimens were identified. Richness, abundance and diversity index were estimated for the whole flowering community, and per subfamily and growth form. These parameters were compared between seasons. Results: The community of orchids was composed by 4,933 flowering individuals from 74 species from the subfamilies Epidendroideae and Orchidoideae. -

This species presents morphological similarity with Homalopetalum alticolum, but it differs from that and another species of this genus by a combination of an oblong-obovate lip with a slightly denticulate lip margin, a callus divided in two parts, globose in the internal part and coni- cal in the external part, and an erose clinandrium. This article presents the complete description and the illustration of the new species, as well as an identification key for the genus. Resumo Homalopetalum joinvillense (Orchidaceae) é uma nova espécie encontrada em Joinville (Brasil). Esta espécie apresenta semelhanças morfológicas com Homalopetalum alticolum, porém se diferencia desta e demais espécies do gênero pela combinação de um labelo oblongo-obovado com a margem do labelo levemente denteada, um calo dividido em duas partes, globoso internamente e cônico externamente e um clinândrio eroso. Comparative vegetative anatomy and systematics of Laeliinae (Orchidaceae) WILLIAM LOUIS STERN & BARBARA S. CARLSWARD Abstract Laeliinae are one of the most prominent orchid subtribes, with c. 40 genera and nearly 1500 species, and contain a disparate group of taxa with widely varying morphological features. There does not appear to be a complex of characters to which one can refer in order to delineate the subtribe as a whole. Thus, it was thought that vegetative anatomy might provide clues to the monophyly of the group. The microscopic structure of the leaves, stems and roots of representatives of most of the genera was studied. It was concluded that the anatomy lacks overall uniformity and that vegetative characters alone are insufficient to assess the relationships amongst the genera. The only nearly consistent anatomical feature was the abaxial row of fibre bundles in the leaves. -

D., Associate Dean, Graduate School May, 2010 i ABSTRACT Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM) is a water-conserving mode of photosynthesis present in approximately 7% of vascular plant species worldwide. CAM photosynthesis minimizes water loss by limiting CO2 uptake from the atmosphere at night, improving the ability to acquire carbon in water and CO2-limited environments. In neotropical orchids, the CAM pathway can be found in up to 50% of species. To better understand the role of CAM in species radiations and the molecular mechanisms of CAM evolution in orchids, we performed carbon stable isotopic composition of leaf samples from 1,102 species native to Panama and Costa Rica, and character state reconstruction and phylogenetic trait analysis of CAM and epiphytism. When ancestral state reconstruction of CAM is overlain onto a phylogeny of orchids, the distribution of photosynthetic pathways shows that C3 photosynthesis is the ancestral state and that CAM has evolved independently several times within the Orchidaceae. -
